The perfect ending to the last day of classes, as far as Ben was concerned, was a giant ice cream sundae.

That this was also his solution to all days that ended in "y" was completely beside the point.

After his last class, he made a beeline toward the ice cream shoppe and waited for Tahiri to join him.

And oh, look, conveniently enough it was only a few minutes before Tahiri was coming down the street, looking much more cheerful today.

"I don't know if I'm ready for a week of not having anything to do, or if it's going to drive me crazy," she announced. "But I'm ready for a banana split."

Never mind that they'd had ice cream yesterday too.

"Maybe we can try out Jen's shuttle," he suggested. "Oh, and hi."

"You keep forgetting that part," Tahiri teased, "and you think we could? And hi yourself, by the way."

"I do," he admitted, leaning in for a kiss. "I'll ask Granddad."

Tahiri reached up to wrap an arm around his neck, very glad that he wasn't a girl this week because that had been awkward (in several ways). "That'd be astral. Much as I like being on the ground, I think I miss that already."

"I want to watch you fly, too."

The boy had kind of strange turn-ons, okay?

Well, look at his family. Was it that surprising if he did?

Tahiri arched an eyebrow at him, amused. "And here I was wondering if I was going to have to fight you for a chance at the helm."

"You can fly for a little bit," he decided magnanimously, opening the door to the shop for her.

"Well, wow. Awfully generous of you." Tahiri aimed a light poke at his ribs as she passed through the doorway and headed straight for the counter.

Contemplating flavor options was always serious business.

"I really am," he declared with an impish smile before peering over her shoulder at the ice cream choices.

Things might have changed since yesterday, okay?

"So...something chocolate, I think."

They could have! And they had. For one, the butter pecan was in the front row today, and two tubs further to the right than it had been yesterday.

"You? Chocolate?" Tahiri grinned and leaned back into him. "I never would have predicted that. I wonder if cheesecake ice cream would go with the banana split?"

"Definitely," Ben said, wrapping his arms around her waist. "And then something brown and something pink and you haven't messed up the way it's supposed to look, just in case that matters."

She didn't even give him a weird look for that comment. "You have got to have had at least one of everything in here, at least twice by now, mister expert. I'm amazed you haven't gotten them to make you an ice cream sundae that looks like a hamburger -- or have you?"

"...maybe," Ben said. "The pistachio," and wow did he murder that pronunciation, "was okay."

Tahiri couldn't tell how badly he'd mangled it, but the kid behind the register apparently could.

"Dork," she said, putting in her order for the banana split with cheesecake ice cream, coffee ice cream, and raspberry sorbet, adding, "Yes, I'm sure about that, and it's not going to be you who has to eat it, is it? No? So there," to the kid at the register when he gave her a weird look for the combination.

Ben put in his order, but with regular chocolate chip, chocolate chocolate chip, and cherry chocolate chip ice creams.

"I need to try yours, too," he decided.

Tahiri pretended to consider this very, very seriously. (Okay, she did consider it seriously; it just didn't take anywhere near as long as she was pretending it did.) "Only if I get a bite of yours."

"Deal," Ben said after an overly dramatic pause. "What did you do today?"

[weetuskenraider]

"Oh, you know, the usual." Tahiri wondered if she could get away with paying today, before Ben did, although that might be tricky with him holding onto her. "Training, all that exciting stuff. How was your final?"

"I played chess with Emma," Ben said, "so it was pretty fun, really."

He pulled back to reach into his belt pouch for his wallet, so she could probably beat him if she was quick.

And Tahiri didn't have a wallet, so it was a matter of grabbing a handful of crumpled bills right out of one of her belt pouches and putting them on the counter; the kid at the register couldn't help snickering.

She looked up and gave Ben a smug grin. "And now we have a whole week off. I wonder what classes we'll get to pick from?"

"Oh, I'm sure it'll be vastly useful ones like Advanced Tapdancing and Modern Music for Earthlings," Ben said with a grin. "And Granddad's ethics class."

[weetuskenraider]

"One thing's for sure, it's almost never not interesting. Occasionally weird, though," Tahiri observed. "Of course, now that I've said that, watch me get stuck with nothing but boring classes."

[momslilassassin]

Ben nodded. "We have some very interesting instructors. I think Professor Kirk could be one to watch, even if I didn't like the final yesterday in Tactics."

[weetuskenraider]

Tahiri grimaced. "No. That wasn't fun. Plus their world has some strange ships."
