The laptop was back out today, and Lacey had finally been able to get the pandas in MyZoo. Lacey had also spent most of the previous day watching a marathon of Planet Earth on the Discovery Channel, which meant that there was a lot of cooing over the Breeding screen.

Because those virtual Facebook animals had really wanted to have facts about their own feeding habits and proximity to extinction related to them by a well-meaning but ditzy coffeeslinger. Really.

The quiet continued on for a few more moments as Bobby figured out how to answer. He finally just went with a simple "Yeah."

"Pretty much," Bobby admitted. "If the wrong people found out about what I can do I'd be in a lot of trouble."

George frowned. "Why? Tis a Gift. Tisn't somethin' to be in trouble for or ashamed of. Or don' they like you havin the Gift?"

"They could force him to use it for bad things," Kyle guessed. "Against people." Sounded familiar.

"There are people who think mutants are unnatural. That we should be... wiped out or something, because we're dangerous." Bobby explained. "And, I mean, there are dangerous mutants out there. But my- job sorta? Is trying to stop those who'd use their powers to do bad stuff. So that one day mutants and humans could live together in peace."

"Well, tha's silly," George said. "How could a whole bunch o' people wit' Gifts be dangerous. Can't be holdin' a few against all o' ye."

"All it'd take is one guy in charge to hold it against them and then people listen even if it's not the right thing to do."

"That's how the Sentinel Program got started," Bobby said. Oh what the hell, in for a penny, in for a pound, right? And Kyle at least would understand about evil robots. "Some guy decided all mutants were a 'menace' and he built these robots to hunt us down."

"They would be unless they were destroyed," Kyle guessed again. "Machines never stop unless they're told to or they're destroyed."

"They're still around," Bobby confirmed. "And they suck."

"They can always be broken. You have to know their weak spot." Sometimes it was being crushed by a giant rock. Or a car. Or, well, you get the picture. "But yeah, how do they know if you can do...that?" He gestured to the glass.

"The guy who built them programmed them to seek out anyone with an X-Gene," Bobby said. "That's the, uh, thing that makes me a mutant." Well, at least as far as he understood it anyway.

Which didn't mean he wasn't trying to look like he knew. What the hell they were talking about.
