Turtle & Canary; Monday [ 08/31 ].

Here it was! Opening the store for the first time of a new semester! Turtle loved this day, and hoped it was productive and that she's started enough curiosity among the newbies that some of them might come in today. She was bouncing around the store all morning to make sure everything was ready to go, and, of course, putting up signs. Signs like:

And, of course:

And then she tried to be good and stay behind the counter, which lead to a lot of bouncing.

Didi waved to Turtle slightly as she came into the store, then filled her basket with a backpack, crayons, paper, a new pair of earrings shaped like butterflies, cereal that would turn her tongue blue, and microwave soft pretzels. She didn't have money, but she figured she'd work something out.

"Hey, Turtle," she said, when she was finally at the counter. "You weren't kidding. There's a lot more in here than you'd expect from the outside."

Turtle looked....very impressed with Didi's purchases today, distracted for a moment because those earrings were cute. Then she grinned. "I know, right? Yet another thing I love about this place. So quaint and small from the outside, but super impressive on the in! Did you find everything okay, Didi?"

"I found more than I meant to get," Didi said ruefully. "I usually just sort of make what I want, but that won't work here."

She held up the earrings to watch them catch the light. "So, uh, how much for all of this?"

She was willing Turtle to just give it to her, but she didn't know how well that would work.

Turtle grinned. "On the bright side," Turtle said, "you're a new student, so you get a great discount! And a free Squishy, if you want one, so with the discount it would be...."

She took a moment to ring it up.

"~~Handwavey~~ dollars and ~~handwavey~~ cents."

Yeah, she hadn't thought 'I'm Death, give me free stuff' would work on this girl.

Um.

"So ... yeah. I don't exactly have money?"

There was a pause.

"...Oh. I see. Did you bring something with you to barter or trade with, then?"

Dammit. Being mortal was harder when you had to do it for more than 24 hours.

"I have myself," Didi said brightly, trying to think, trying to be cheerful. "How serous are you about hiring?"

Turtle's eyebrows lifted. "Very serious!" she chirped. "We're one of the premiere places to be employed on this island, as well. Great work environment, discounts on everything we've got, and free Squishies! We've got open shifts on Tuesday and Wednesday, but I'm willing to barter with Monday if it's better suited for you."

"You're in luck," Didi said, smiling again. "I don't have classes Tuesday at all. If you'd give me the job I'd love to have it."

"Fantastic!" Turtle beamed. "And I would love to give it to you! Let me grab the paperwork."

And, by paperwork, it would soon be discovered, as she plopped it on the counter, she meant 'encyclopedia,' apparently.

She gave a sheepish grin. "With this place being so inter-dimensional," she explained, "it takes a lot of technicalities."

Didi looked at the stack.

At Turtle. At the stack.

Sigh.

She picked up the pen. If she really didn't want to do it, she wouldn't have to, but if she was stuck as human she might as well live as human. So she started filling in the forms with Didi's full name, her date of birth, her blood type ...

"I'm kind of complicated?" she said, almost sheepish. Although nothing she was writing in looked especially complicated.

"Definitely an acceptable answer for some of that," Turtle said with a sympathetic, understanding sort of look. "You can take it home and take your time with it if you want, and then we can get you started maybe next week?"

"I'll take it home, but I'll have it done by tomorrow," Didi offered. "Does that work ~~since I already posted the store~~?"

"Oh!" Turtle had a mun who seriously hasn't been around a computer enough to have known that, omg *dies* nodded. "That'd actually be great! Thanks, Didi!"

"You're welcome," she said, "and thank you for giving me the job!"

And then she bounced off.

[OOC: Not a problem -- I wanted to get into the routine so I just went with it.]

"Anytime!" Turtle called out after Didi, frowning a little because she didn't get a chance to push her Squishy on her.

This seemed the place to buy something, at least she hoped it was. The sign outside was gibberish to her.

She did wander in with a list. Because she was on a Mission.

"Azula!" Turtle smiled, feeling glad on both accounts of seeing the girl in the store and that she'd actually remembered her name. "Hey! Welcome to Turtle & Canary!"

"Thank you," Azula said, very approving of the welcome. "Am I right in thinking this was a place to buy things?"

"This is not only a place to buy things, Azula," Turtle said with a grin. "This is the place to buy things! Are you looking for anything in particular, or did you just want to look around? It's a big store, and we have almost anything, and, if we don't have it, we can get it."

"Impressive," Azula said. She raised the list in her head. It had Chinese like calligraphy. "I don't suppose you can read this list? If not, My requirements are simple: Chopsticks, red curtain, a map and calligraphic brush and paper for writing."

"That's all?" Turtle's eyebrows lifted in an expression of surprise until it broke into a more genuine grin. "Here I thought you were going to give me a challenge. No problem at all! Apu, you heard the lady, get the stuff."

"Oh, what size curtain? Big one?"

"The school year is young yet," Azula assured her with a smirk.

She specified the size of the curtain and added, "Just something to divide the line marking which is my side and which side is my roommate's."

"You got it," Turtle said, nodding to Apu so that he could go fetch the goods while she schmoozed the new customer. "I assume you'll be wanting your free Squishy with that."

"...squishy?"

"Oh, you've got to try one!" Turtle said with a burst of enthusiasm. "Especially since it's free, since you're new! The Grape Judas is highly recommended."

And also potentially addictive, but, you know...

"It's a drink?" Azula asked, dubious. "Well, if it's free I don't see why I can't try it."

"You're a smart thinker, Azula, I can just tell," Turtle said, nodding approvingly and then she turned to the SquishyBot nearby. "You heard her, Bob, get the girl a Grape Judas."

The SquishyBot, with its mechanical arms and roving eyes, obeyed, kicking into action in making a Squishy in its little stomach dispenser compartment and then handing it over to the customer.

Accepted the compliment as if it were her due. She was a prodigy after all.

She did, however, watch the mechanical object with interest. "Did you invent this machine?"

"Oh, no, definitely not me," Turtle said, shaking her head. "Someone named Agatha who's no longer on the island invented and put Bob here together for me, and I'm really lucky to have her. She's such a great asset to the shop."

"You assign gender to it?"

"She's always seemed more like a girl to me," Turtle admitted with a shrug. "Girls are more efficient. Even if Bart insisted she was a boy, but I met him halfway with the name. I wanted to name her Alice."

"Girls are more efficient," Azula agreed. "Mechanical objects like this would be very helpful at home."

Although, the purpose Azula had in mind had more of a martial bent to it than just serving in a shop.

"One of my former employees," Turtle announced proudly with a grin, "took a similar SquishyBot for his branch of Turtle & Canary to a primitive desert culture and it's doing amazingly well there!"

"Do you still have a SquishyBot?" If she gets one, she's going to change the name.

Turtle's eyebrows arched a little. "You mean, like, for sale? It's kind of a Turtle & Canary exclusive, but if you're interested in opening up a branch on your homeworld..."

"I don't think my people are ready quite yet," Azula said with a smirk, "but I shall propose it to my brother. I'm certain he'll like the idea."

He liked playing servant in a tea shop. He'll probably love this idea too.

"Let me get you some brochures!" Turtle offered brightly, which didn't take her long at all, considering she kept them close at hand and was now offering a small pack of them over to Azula.

Azula took it, glanced and said. "It might be a little difficult for my brother to read but I'll get it to him."

She didn't seem too bothered that Zuko would find reading this difficult.

"There are a lot of helpful pictures and diagrams," Turtle assured her. "Can your brother not read?"

"The writing is different, don't worry, I'll send him a dictionary."

The one that was meant for small children. Azula grinned.

"...is your money different, too?"

Not that it was a problem; Turtle had handled all sorts from Lord only knew where. But it never hurt to ask.

"Does gold or silver coins work for you?" Azula asked then cocked her head, "Or is there a place where I can change currency?"

"I can do currency exchanges," Turtle offered with a nod. "There's a money exchange at the bank, but, a lot of time, people will just set up an account based on whatever currency they trade. Like, for example, gold and silver a way more valuable than the dollar here. So I can set you up with an account based on however many gold coins you want to put in, and we can just do the conversions when you buy stuff. I've got all sorts of charts and graphs, too, if you want to make sure I'm not stiffing you."

Azula raised both eyebrows. "This shop really does provide for everything. I'll avail of your services then."

Tuesday shift has been claimed, but Wednesday is still very open!
