The Arms Hotel Lobby, Thursday [9/3]

Hoshi marched into the kitchen clutching an armload of books. "You're on your own today, Gunther," she announced before taking a seat at the desk and opening her book. Never mind that it was only the first week of classes. Hoshi was already getting in mental shape for final exams.

Operation: Talk to People was probably a bit sad for starting off with her roommate, but Hinata felt that it was something at least.

"Good morning, Hoshi-san," Hinata said, smiling slightly as she realized the other girl was studying. "Working hard?"

Hoshi fully approved of Operation: Talk to People and would be happy to help.

"Good morning, Hinata! I love throwing myself right into studying at the start of the school year. The more I get done early, the less likely I'll make myself sick with worry the night before final exams," said Hoshi.

Any help would be much obliged as Hinata wasn't very good at it, even with a plan!

"I d-doubt that you'd have a real problem," she said, resting her arms on the counter. "As it's months before the exams will be even in sight. Th-There is such a thing as too hard working. You wouldn't want to burn out."

"Hopefully I'll be so well-prepared that by exam week, I can just sit back and relax," said Hoshi, smiling. "Plus I'm planning on taking the weekend off and hitting Caritas on Saturday nights, so it should balance out."

"I cannot see you relaxing wh-while everyone else is panicking," Hinata admitted. "Though it is good to hear that you're planning on taking some time off, at least."

"It's all about keeping things balanced," said Hoshi. "But usually it's pretty quiet here during the day if there's no events going on. I like to finish off a lot of homework just so I don't get bored. So I'm glad that you're giving me an excuse to take a break."

Her laugh was a bit rueful.

"I'm glad you don't mind," she replied. "I just felt like getting out and a-about more often. I was even th-thinking of attending the play tonight."

"I'm surprised you weren't in the play this time," said Hoshi. "You did a really good job with the previous ones."

She flushed slightly.

"I had thought to give it a break," Hinata explained, "as there were so many new p-people trying out that I did not think it fair to go against them when I'd done it before."

Hoshi nodded. "That was nice of you," she said. "Now that I know I'm staying in Fandom, I might help out with the crew again. But I'm not sure if acting is really my thing."

"You could give it a try," she suggested mildly. "Just in the try outs to see how you feel this time a-around. I think I will try out for the next play."

"I might do just that," said Hoshi. "Even if Geoffrey doesn't cast me, I'm sure he'll be happy to get extra help with the crew. Or I could always do another bake sale if the theater needs more money. Honestly, that was my favorite part of doing the play last time!"

"I'm sure he'd have no objection to one of his crew holding a b-bake sale either," she laughed softly. "As long as it is for the play I think Geoffrey-san is alright with it. He's very dedicated."

That was one word for it.

"Especially if they bring extra food for him," said Hoshi. "I''m not sure he really gets to eat on a regular basis, except Liir was bringing food for Geoffrey's roommate. I think Miss Connell took him some food once."

"That's not g-good," she frowned. "It's one think to love doing something, but to the point of not eating?"

"He probably just forgets," chuckled Hoshi. "But as long as people just bring him food..."

She laughed. "Th-That makes me want to bring him a sandwich, but I doubt he'd eat before a performance."

"Do you think he'd cast me if I brought him food at the try-outs?" asked Hoshi with a smirk.

Hinata blinked, a bit startled, and had to giggle.

"I don't th-think it'd work," she said ruefully. "Not when his play is involved!"

"Then I'd have to get in on my own merits," said Hoshi. "Anyway, I should probably wait until club fair to decide if I have time for the play."

"Ah! Th-That's true," she said, nodding. "It does depend all on what sounds interesting this year."

"There was a language club once," said Hoshi, grinning. "But everyone who ran it has since left the school."

"You could run that no problem," she teased, smiling. "How many languages do you know how? A million, perhaps?"

"I don't know if there's quite that many!" said Hoshi, giggling. "At last count, it was about 30 languages. I'd like to hit 40 in the next year."

"What ones are you studying now?" she asked, interested. "I o-only know English and Japanese."

"I thought I'd brush up on my Latin. You never know when it's going to come in handy," said Hoshi.

"Like in Barry Plodder?" she teased lightly. "I don't think y-you could use magic the way he does with Latin."

"Probably not, but you never know when the clue you need during the next invasion is in some ancient book in Latin," said Hoshi.

"It's never in brand n-new stories that have just hit the market," she commented wryly. "Th-Think how odd that would be. The age-old solution, in a brand new book?"

"Oh, that would make things so much easier," agreed Hoshi. "Last time I didn't even get a shot at doing research. I got to the library and dozed off right away."

"At least you t-tried?" she said sympathetically. "And I w-wonder if it really would make things easier? No one would th-think to check the newest books first..."

"Then again, the ones we usually end up searching are in Special Collections and haven't been touched in years," Hoshi pointed out.

She grinned.

"True," she admitted. "I just think it would be, if it w-were in a story, an interesting plot twist. Unexpected."

"Next time something weird happens, I'm going to ask Dr. Jones for all the brand-new books in the library so I can check them first," said Hoshi, laughing.

"I wonder how often they update their library," Hinata said idly, grinning over at her. "Book Haven is likely more up-to-date in the popular newest ones."

"Hey, maybe we should do research at Book Haven first next time," said Hoshi, smirking.

"I do have keys," she noted, laughing softly. "I'm sure I could let you in if y-you asked nicely."

Or, you know, at all. Hinata was pretty easy that way.

"I'll have to remember that, and not just for research purposes," said Hoshi, smiling.

"We've cookies and tea too," she said, teasing. "But it's t-true enough, I would not mind if you remembered."

But at least there are plenty of other hotel staff who don't need to study.
