Caritas - Thursday evening [Open]

"Hey, Tino," Ben said, walking into the bar holding a box. "I know we haven't really had the best start with being coworkers, but I think this might help."

Ben put the box down on the bar and opened it. It was a cake with the letters "BFF" written on it.

Minutes later, the cake was in the garbage. "I'm sorry!" Ben said. "How was I supposed to know you hated strawberry filling that much? You never open up to me."

Just another day at the bar.

I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.

It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

"Hello Ben," Mina said, sitting at the bar. "I hope you are well?"

"Evening, Mina," Ben said. "And I'm not just well; I'm fantastic. And I'm hoping you're at least the same, maybe even better."

"I am quite well, myself," she said. "May I ask why the great mood?"

"Oh, it's nothing specific. Life's just been really good the past couple months," Ben said.

"That is wonderful to hear," Mina said. "May I bother you for a gin and tonic, to toast your good fortune?"

"Okay, but after you toast me, you are going to have to drink it. I insist," Ben said, turning around to grab the appropriate bottles and make the drink.

"Oh, well, that I am certain I can manage," Mina said. "I have an amazing capacity to drink."

"In that case," Ben said, putting the drink down in front of Mina, "remind me never to challenge you to a drinking contest."

"A benefit of my nature," Mina said, raising the glass. "To your good fortune. May I find some of my own."

Ben grabbed the glass of club soda he had on the back counter and raised it. "Here's to that."

"I wasn't even drinking this, really, but it's always good to have something on hand to toast with."

"Very intelligent," Mina said, before taking a long sip from her drink. "How is business at the second-hand store?"

"Just about as good as always," Ben said. "Which is to say 'not great, but it's a second-hand store so it's not like I'm expecting heavy traffic.' Actually, I think all of my most loyal customers work for me."

"I shall have to endeavor to purchase more there," Mina said. "Contribute as best I can to your continued well being."

She chuckled into her glass.

"If you want to help a guy out, you can always start with leaving a healthy tip for the bartender," Ben reminded her.

"Ahhh, yes," Mina said. "The acceptable form of charity."

"Oh, it's not charity. It's a reward for someone who I hope you'd consider a friendly and engaging bartender," Ben said. "How's life at the clinic? Anybody come in with anything fascinating and/or hilarious recently?"

"Alas, I have not had anything other than mundane injuries," Mina said. "On the upside, the supply closet is immaculate and efficiently organized."

"Well, if I find some way to injure myself, I promise to do it in a way you'll be telling friends about for months," Ben vowed. "After all, you need something to do besides continuing to pick away at the closet."

"I would be quite grateful," Mina said. "If things continued to be quiet, I might be taken to slandering Bram Stoker on the internet."

"Looking into a career as an internet troll?" Ben asked, a little surprised. "It's a dangerous job, but I guess someone has to do it."

"I appear to have a personal vendetta," Mina said, finishing her drink. She grinned.

"Why's that?" Ben asked ~~after the mun searched gmail to make sure the question made sense to ask~~.

"He published a book of documents gleaned from myself and loved ones," Mina said. "I understand it is often thought of as mere fiction."

"Dracula?" Ben asked, clearly intrigued (since he WAS a massive nerd and all). "I heard he's real in my world, too."

"He's very dead, in mine," Mina said. "We saw to that."

"Death tends to just be a hurdle in mine, so it makes sense that someone like that would be able to get around it," Ben said. "How accurate was the book, anyway?"

"Fairly, except for some of the facts about my relationship with Jonathan, especially afterward," Mina said.

"If this question's too personal, I won't mind at all if you refuse to answer, but I am a bit of a nerd so I have to ask it," Ben said, prefacing the question. "But what did Stoker get wrong about that?"

"We had no children," Mina said. "And our marriage did not last."

She was a little grim.

"I'm sorry," Ben said. "I think you have good justification for the trolling, then."

"Thank you," Mina said. "But enough of such darker matters. I hear you've been going out with Constable Day?"

"Yeah," Ben said. "We've had a date or two. Or a few more than that, really."

"Excellent," Mina said. "I would think you match together well."

"Well, either she enjoys spending time with me, or she really enjoys wasting some time on Sundays," Ben said. "I like to think it's the former."
