Dite's Decadent Delights; Friday [ 09/11 ].

Typically, Valentine didn't bring her laptop with her to Dite's shop; there were usually more than enough things to keep her entertained and distracted from her tendency to browse, but today was an exception. To her credit, though, she was working on writing something, but as to what it was, she wasn't about to tell anyone.

She was not about to neglect her dedication for featuring thematic devices. Quite the opposite, in fact. For today, on display at the counter, she had the Sinulator, a device that you plugged into your computer so that someone else, over the magicks of teh Intrawebz, could control the vibe and movement of it. There was even a name involved in the development of such products: teledildonics.

The Internet: not only for porn, but taking it to new interactive levels. It was beautiful, really.

Jack considered this, then: "Spell my name. Not with the vibrator, just -- how would it sound?"

He would have asked for hers, but hers was long.

"I'm not beeping it myself," Valentine warned with a grin and, instead, went ahead and knocked out the rhythm for Jack's name in Morse code on the counter.

Jack repeated the rhythm. "I'm disappointed you didn't say the beeps," he joked. "Yours?"

Valentine didn't even need to think before she started knocking again. With how many times she worked with codes with her brothers when they were little, it was basically ingrained in her head.

"No beeping; I'm not about to stand here and sound like an idiot trying to spell out a name as long as mine in Morse."

"Even if I promised I wouldn't laugh?"

He so would, was the thing.

"That would depend on me actually believing that, though, wouldn't it?" Valentine asked with a curious tilt of her head and a grin that ruined any chances she had of making that thoughtfulness sound sincere.

Jack had to laugh at that grin. "Oh, probably," he had to admit. "I won't work too hard to convince you. So how are you, besides selling communication devices cleverly disguised as sex toys?"

"That's...cleverly disguised?" Valentine asked and then she shook her head. "But I'm good. Nothing interesting going on, really. Turtle and I have our radio audition tonight, but that's all I've got."

"Not really. Well, it looks like it would be little use at all?" Jack shrugged. "Good luck on radio. Ours at the theater were Tuesday and I'm trying to convince Emma to do it next week. But I don't have much going on, either."

"Do you know if Ender auditioned this time around?"

"He wasn't there last week," Jack said. "He has another week, though. I hope he does. He was good."

Valentine grinned. Of course he was.

"I think the acting genes all fell to the males of my family," she said, ironically with perfect modesty.

"Acting on stage, maybe," Jack returned lightly.

Another laughed worked out of Valentine. "What do you mean by that?" she asked.

"Just that you have a depth to you and I can't altogether figure it out," Jack said. "And that I think you could be quite an actress, if you wanted to."

Valentine found herself liking that response a lot, and not just because she wasn't really expecting something straightforward like that. She smiled.

"Still not going to convince me to ever really try," she said. "Not that I figured you were, but I'm definitely leaving the acting to Ender."

Once in a great while, Jack was straightforward. It kept people off-balance.

"I wouldn't," he said. "I'd love to see you there if you wanted to come, of course, but if you don't I can come bother you at work."

"You do make a tempting offer," Valentine said with a grin, "but if it's one of the other, I'm definitely choosing you bothering me at work."

"You're in luck, then," Jack promised. "I'm not too terribly busy Fridays."

"Oh, I think you're the lucky one, Jack," Valentine informed him with a nod toward the Sinulator. "You're the one who gets to see all these cool things."

"Truly, when I go home I'll miss this time just for the sex toys."

No, he wouldn't.

"Give me a little warning before you take off," Valentine offered. "I'll make you a gift basket."

Yes, she would.

Jack cracked up at that. "Now I'll have to be sure I get one, Valentine."

"Good," Valentine's grin was bright. "Because I'll have way too much fun putting one together for you."
