This had been a horrible, horrible handwaved idea the first time around, born of radio notes, large amounts of alcohol, and a need to introduce Minsc to pizza and bowling for his own good.

It was quite possible that this was not any better of an idea the second time around.

"What I don't understand," Ghanima announced, as she tried to get the score-keeper-thing to work, "is why the shoes don't match. Is there a quantifiable reason that bowling shoes must be ugly and ill-fitting, or is it just for the amusement of the employees?"

"Don't look at me for the answer to that," Nathan replied, giving his head a bemused shake. "They didn't even have a standardized rule set in my time. Nevermind a mandate on how uncomfortable the shoes have to be."

Which was to say, he didn't much care for the shoes, either.

"We don't even have this game on my planet. Maybe there's a version somewhere in the Empire, but if so, I don't know the rules," Ghanima laughed. "I suppose our bowling would have ridiculous hats instead of shoes."

"And if anyone asked, you could say it was supposed to affect your sense of balance or something of the sort, to pose more of a challenge in the sport." Nathan found himself a bench to sit on so that he could wrestle with the shoes.

Damned shoes.

"Maybe it's about obstructing the view. It's difficult to pay attention to the pins if you're busy being distracted by your own feet."

"This is true. Maybe we're supposed to get dizzy and fall over, or trip on our own shoelaces," she mused. "I would rather wear one of my stepmother's grandiose hats, simply because it would make more sense. If you could keep it from falling off while you were bowling, you got an extra ten points or something of that nature."

"If I'd known that wearing your own shoes was an option, I wouldn't have bothered with the rental desk," Nathan mused, about ready to give up on the hideous pair of red, blue, and what-was-once-white-but-is-now-grey things that he was trying to get on his feet and failing miserably with.

It didn't help that he didn't want them on his feet, really.

"If you can wear your ninja-ness, I want to wear my boots," Ghanima sulked, looking down at her toes. For all her usual mantle of maturity, the fact remained that Ghanima was very much in her twenties, and sometimes shallow. "These are not fashionable."

"I do not carry a sword," Ghanima pointed out logically. "But I do have a wide array of knives at my disposal. Do you think that would suffice?"

BOWLING!

And this time, Minsc was going to try to do it without breaking something, although Boo still seemed pretty married to the idea of having those loser bumpers in the gutters for him. The only reason Minsc allowed it was that he respected the hamster for playing a sport where the main tool for playing was significantly bigger than he was.

He had a beer and bowling and pizza, which meant he couldn't be too sad, but there was still a forlorn look toward his feet.

"I miss my boots. They were plus one dexterity. These shoes are, like, plus seven ugly."

Nathan really, really didn't know what Minsc was going on about, but it wasn't as though that was anything new to him, by this point.

"And plus ten ill-fitting. At at least a minus four in the 'comfortable' category."

At least.

Minsc snorted, wondering if the Captain had been nipping into the whiskey again before they came here.

"At least," he stated, "we have done this before and so we know they are not cursed to remain on our feet! Fashion is a frivilous thing, but I'd just as soon cut off my own feet than be stuck with these. No protection, either, safe for the floors!"

Pause.

"Though they are very nice floors; I can see why they'd want them maintained."

"What I don't understand is why they don't make Boo wear the shoes," Ghanima pointed out. "I don't think that's quite fair."

"They didn't have any in his size, my lady!" Minsc protested lightly in defense of the hamster. "Boo has very tiny feet!"

"A severe decrease in charisma!" Minsc said with an almost offended snort. "I've seen mutilated corpses with more charisma with these! I mean, they could have at least have been shiny. If they were shiny, then at the least you could use them to blind the bad guys. This'll just make them laugh."

There then followed a thoughtful pause.

"Although, you are armed with a heavy ball. It would probably be easier to hit them with it if they were laughing..."

He didn't know what it meant; he saw it in some movie on TV where there was bowling.
