Feeling like an imposter in her new coat Hinata was at work, as per usual, and feeling glad that at the very least, Yei’s fur was white.

So it matched the coat. Otherwise she doubted the poor coat would have managed to look furless for long since Yei was all over sitting in her lap and attempting to perch on her shoulders today.

“No,” she said patiently, plucking Yei from her shoulder and holding her in front. “You’re too big for my sh-shoulders.”

Yei mewed plaintively. Hinata sighed, set her cat down, and tried to go back to her book. It was a scene that would be repeated today, she just knew it.

Triela wasn't really a big book-reader, that was Claes. But she was campaigning. So she walked into the bookstore looking for students, and... Hey, it was Hinata!

"Hey, Hinata," Triela grinned and waved.

"Triela," she said, setting Yei down and offering the other girl a smile. "How are you?"

"I'm good," Triela declared. Which was mostly true since it was early in the campaigning day. Later the answer might be different.

"And how are you?"

"Well enough today," she said, watching as Yei skittered over to inspect the visitor.

"Work makes f-finding the books on my class list easy," she shared, "so it's a bonus on Tuesdays."

"That does sound convenient," Triela smiled. "And it seems quiet in here..."

She looked amused. "I enjoy the quiet," Hinata said easily. "I get both time to read, and don't have to feel s-stressed about too many people coming in."

Yei, for her part, parked her fuzzy little behind down in front of Triela and mewed demandingly. Helloooo?

Triela was still bad at the whole petting things thing. But she had learned enough that wearing gloves made it hard to do properly. So she peeled hers off and awkwardly scratched around Yei's ears.

"Are you getting better around a lot of people?" she asked Hinata, sort of forgetting what she was supposed to be doing.

Yei was easy! Now that she had attention being paid to her, she was totally purring up a storm. Hiiiii.

Hinata leaned against the counter, smiling at the picture the two of them made. "I wouldn't say 'for sure' that I am," she said slowly, "but I've made progress in talking to more people lately."

She'd had ten conversations in two weeks! This was an improvement.

...yes, Hinata was aware that was a wee bit sad.

"Good," Triela grinned. "I'm glad."

"Actually, speaking of progress..." what a perfect segue! "I was wondering if you'd vote for me in the Student Council election." See? Smooooooth transition.

Hinata tilted her head consideringly.

"If I were to vote on f-friendship alone, I would," she said finally. "But what makes you g-good for the job, rather than it being a popularity contest?"

"Well, I am level-headed, as you know. And I have a background in security. Considering how often the island is attacked it might make sense to plan for the possibility at our school events, right?"

She was totally just making this up as she went along.

That was alright with Hinata, really.

"The teachers chaperone things as a m-matter of course," she pointed out, "and also double as security."

"True," Triela agreed. "And they've done a pretty good job so far. But I don't think more intentional planning could hurt. As far as I can tell the current system is just to have them show up and hope nothing goes wrong."

Though it was entirely possible that Triela didn't know all there was to know about school event planning.

"As far as you can tell," Hinata repeated, watching as Yei wandered off. "What research have you done, th-then?"

"Not that much, to be honest. I didn't even decide to run until Sunday."

Hinata smiled softly.

"You're t-too honest," she said, "admitting a weakness like that is a flaw in a campaign."

"Should I have made something up instead?" Triela asked, honestly curious.

"No," she said, shaking her head. "You wouldn't w-want to be caught in a lie. But you could talk around it, making sure to s-say it was your opinion and sounding utterly reasonable and sincere."

Hinata was poor at the politics game, especially when it came to her family, but she did know the ins and outs of it.

"Huh. So try to mislead people until they forget what they were trying to get an answer about?" That had some parallels to combat tactics... Though this didn't sound like it would end in dead people.

"It's not as... obvious, as misleading," Hinata corrected. "You just s-spin your opinion until it sounds like fact, but someone who, say, if they were to record your words and listen to them later, would find you just spoke of your opinion. Not that you were saying it was fact."

"Oh," Triela said softly. "I've never been good at that sort of thing. Most of us leave lying, and more subtle stuff, to our handlers."

Her smile was a bit rueful.

"It does t-take a certain touch," she agreed.

"Maybe if I run again next year I'll try that. I suspect it's a little bit too late to start now..." What with elections the next day.

"Probably," she said gently. "But you're right, the y-year gives you time to practice as well."

"You want to give me some pointers?" Triela asked.

Hinata blinked.

"Me? H-Help you?"

"Well, you do seem to know more about this sort of thing than I do," she pointed out.

"Osmosis," she said, a bit ruefully. "But I s-suppose if you think I would be useful, I could help."

"After this election I'll come bug you about it, then."

"I'll look forward to it," she said, smiling. "Did you need anything else t-today?"

"Not right now, thanks." She might have to come get something for Claes some other time, though.

"I'll see you later, th-then," she replied. "Good luck with your campaigning."

"Later," Triela waved as she turned for the door. "And thanks."

"G-Glad I could help," she said mildly.

It's kinda depressing to have the sun coming up as you're leaving for work when a month ago it was already up.
