MCA Lobby; Monday [ 09/21 ].

Well, now that the new furniture had come in and the lobby had gotten itself a facelift, Rachel could sigh appreciatively as she looked around at her creation and set to the task of not only appreciating it, but also maintaining it.

She was dusting. Sort of. Dusting in a fashion that mostly involved drifting around in nice clothes and brushing a ridiculous feather duster over things that weren't even old enough to have collect dust anyway. But it made her look like she was.

Mid-century modern, was what it was called, and that just tickled her, because what a perfect title for herself. The mid-century modern woman. She stopped a moment to relish in just being her for a moment before bouncing back to the task for keeping house. Well, keeping lobby, anyway.

Because being a social butterfly is just as important a part of being a mid-century modern woman as fake dusting is.

On his way out to run some errands, Sweets noticed the lobby's makeover and had to stop for a moment to appreciate it.

"Looks good," he remarked.

Well, of course it did! Rachel had designed it herself, after all, but praise was praise, however obvious, and she halted the dusting enough to preen in the basking glory of it.

All two words of it. Hey, you took compliments where you could.

"Thank you! I rather think so myself; give this place a little fresh touch."

"It's very classy," Sweets said with a smile and nod. "Oh, I'm Dr. Lance Sweets. I'm subletting in number eight."

"Oh, yes," Rachel said, nodding knowledgeably. "With Tom."

One day, she'll get it. Though, if she did, it would probably be entirely on accident.

"That would make me your landlady. I'm Rachel. It's always nice to meet my tenants."

"Tim," he replied, attempting to correct her about his roommate's name.

"And it's very nice to meet you, Rachel. You are definitely not what I would imagine when I pictured a landlady."

"I do hope you mean that in a good way," Rachel said with a teasing tone, mingled with a tone that suggested that he couldn't possibly have meant it any other way, anyway.

Sweets laughed. "Of course. Most landladies are little grey haired ladies."

"In house slippers and bathrobes," Rachel added, laughing a little herself. "I hope I've at least got a few more years until I get to that point. For now, I'm just a young entrepretunist with an eye for what's so far been just a great venture into the independent spirit. Not exactly where I pictured myself at age twenty-two, but that right there's the story of my entire life."

"That's an impressive accomplishment for your age," Sweets said, with the air of someone who considered themselves much older than twenty-two at the ripe old age of twenty-four.

[woe! SP is love]

"Oh, well," Rachel sighed a little, giving Lance here best optimistic face, "I sort of had to grow up early for my age, with everything I've been through, but it's nice to know I could really pull out and use it to my advantage."

Sweets nodded. "That's really cool, Rachel. I have a lot of respect for people who overcome bad beginnings to really make something of themselves."

"And it is so nice," Rachel said, once she'd finished preening and maybe batting her white rabbit lashes a little, "to meet someone who actually appreciates it, Lance. You'd be so surprised how few people do."

"Well, I know how it is when people underestimate you because of your age," Sweets admitted with a sheepish smile.

"Now that sounds like there's something a little more behind that," Rachel noted with a grin. "What is it you do, Lance? You can't be that much older than me yourself."

"I'm twenty four," Sweets replied. "And I've got my doctorate though I'm currently working as a guidance counselor at the school."

Rachel would have tried not to say anything, but she would have failed anyway, so she just out and said it, arching an eyebrow. "Doctorate at twenty four and you're just a high school guidance counselor?"

She was so hanging something like that over Adah's head next time she talked to her.

"Well, I work for the FBI," Sweets admitted. "I do some profiling and I counsel agents. But the team I was working with is on hiatus, so I'm here."

Now that was more like it, even if it did ruin her chances for lecturing her sister on how everything she was doing was going to amount to nothing in the long run.

And it wasn't the CIA, either. Rachel didn't really know the difference, but Eeben was CIA and that was all she needed to know, jeez oh man.

"Not a bad way to spend the break, then," Rachel said, her tone returning. "I know I certainly feel like it'll be awful nice having you around, Lance."

Sweets chuckled. "It's been nice to be here so far."

After a moment's pause, he added, "Rachel, do you like karaoke?"

[*tucks you in*]

Rachel drew in a bit of a reluctant breath. "You...have been to the bar, haven't you, Lance? Do you know what they have playing the karaoke there?"

"I was there," Sweets admitted. "I'm choosing to see them as really elaborate cosplayers."

"But..." Rachel looked like she didn't want to say it, like she didn't even want to think it, but it just couldn't be avoided. "Parts! Fell off!"

Sweets made a face and reached out to give her a shoulder pat. "All part of the act as far as I'm concerned."

"That is...really some impressive make-up work, then," Rachel said, giving Lance a rueful look but appreciating the attempts at comfort.

"Totally, right?" he said, nodding encouragingly.

On the one hand, it was absolutely adorable that Lance was just as willing to completely deny the obvious as Rachel herself was. On the other hand, Rachel didn't want to get anywhere near one of those zombies, make-up or deformity or undead or what.

On the third, inexplicable hand, Lance was actually kind of cute. In a total nerd way, sure, but he didn't have spots, seemed completely normal, and had praised her.

So the third hand won. "Right," Rachel said, smiling. "Now, I'll admit, I'm not one for karaoke at all, but I wouldn't mind some time maybe you and me going to at least get a drink together, if you're interested."

"Sure, that would be great!" Sweets said.

It never even occurred to him that she would think it was a date.

"And when might be good for you, Lance?" Rachel asked, her smile brightening with her success. "Saturday, perhaps?"

"I'm free on Saturday, yeah," Sweets said.

You know you just want to take off your shoes and wiggle your toes on that white shag rug.

Not gonna lie. I kind of want that rug right now.

Also, la la, SP. Which is awesome.
