So, Hinata had seen the cast list and been glad that she’d been casted even though her part was still making her go, well, ‘um’ a bit.

She could definitely sympathize with him, but—well, uh.

So Hinata was rereading the play and trying to figure out how she wanted to attempt to pull off her character. Hmmmm.

Tara was running terrifyingly short on escapist literature -- well, it was terrifying if you were her -- so she stopped by the bookstore and drew a deep breath to steel herself for the talking-to-someone-new thing.

"Hi," she said to the girl behind the counter. "D-do you know if you have anything by Tanya Huff?"

Hinata looked up from her copy of the play and offered the girl a smile as she closed the book.

"Good day. Th-That's a fantasy author, right?" Hinata asked, slipping from behind the counter. "She put out a new book only a few months ago, if I remember right."

"Fantasy," Tara confirmed. "Um, witches and v-vampires, stuff like that."

She looked over at the shelves. "She's probably in with the H's, huh?"

"Would you like me to help you find th-them?" she asked tentatively. "It is no problem at all."

"I wouldn't mind," Tara said, stepping to the side to let the girl show her. "I-if I don't have an escort I'll spend my whole paycheck here."

A quick grin lightened her eyes as she gestured for the girl to come along.

"I spend a l-lot of mine here," she confided. "I'm just lucky because I work for something to do and not for the money."

Hinata's family was pretty rich, for all that she never flaunted it.

She flushed slightly. "I am Hinata," she added, "forgive me for n-not introducing myself sooner. It is a pleasure to meet you."

"Lucky. I definitely need the money," Tara said.

She wasn't poor, but her father was not going to send an allowance to his witch daughter.

She flailed a little. "Oh, gosh, me too. I'm Tara. H-have you worked here long, Hinata?"

"Please, d-don't worry about it," she answered, smiling. "Over a year now, about that anyway. I do like it here."

It was quiet; Hinata approved mightily of this.

"I started at the school last summer," Hinata explained. "Sh-Should I guess you're somewhat newer?"

Tara nodded. "Since July," she said. "I'm in 10th grade."

She started looking through the books as she talked, now and then pulling one down to look at the back cover.

Hinata nodded, smiling slightly.

"I am in the 11th, I believe--that's a junior, r-right?" Hinata always had to do a mental countdown to make sure the ages lined up. "I don't feel like the time as truly gone by as the calendar says it has."

"Right," Tara confirmed. "I know what you mean? I f-feel like I've been here a lot longer than two and a half months. Like, like it's home."

"Home?" Hinata smiled, moving to tug down a book that was out of order and replacing it where it ought to be. "It's n-not my home, but it's a... second one, I suppose. I learn a lot here."

"I w-wasn't having such a great time at home," Tara said, almost apologetic, then ducked her head as if she'd revealed a great secret. "It's just in California. Where are you from?"

Hinata just nodded at that--no need to pry there. "It's good to get away then," she offered, and smoothly went on to answer Tara's question, "Konoha--the full n-name is a bit of a mouthful so I'll spare you. It's a village in a completely different world. We're more like Feudal Japan than anything modern there."

Tara nodded. "Yeah, it was. And you're r-really far from home."

She grinned as she spotted the book she was looking for and greedily pulled it down. "Oh, this looks wonderful!"

"Have you been looking f-forward to that book?" she asked lightly. "And I am, I suppose."

"Uh, not in like a crazy obsessive stalker way, but yeah," Tara clarified. "She's funny."

"Is th-there a book of hers you'd recommend in particular?" Hinata asked easily. "I haven't tried her, I admit."

[NP!]

Tara's fingers went easily to a midsized paperback volume. "This one ios my favorite," she said. "I like the vampire in it. He's n-nothing liek the real thing, but that isn't exactly a bad thing."

"Do the real th-thing exist in your world?" she asked, locating another copy of the book so she could tug it down to inspect the back. "They don't in mine."

Tara nodded. "Yeah. They're ... almost exactly like, like they were on that other island."

She winced.

"S-Sorry," Hinata said, "I didn't mean to bring up anything like that."

"No, no, it's fine," Tara said quickly. "I mean, I didn't go. I just heard things."

"Same for me," she said, relieved at that much. "I am glad I didn't go."

Subject change, subject change...

"Was there any other books you wanted to look at?"

Subject change!

"J-just the one for now," Tara sad, clutching it to her chest as she headed to the register. "And, uh, thank you for helping me out."

"It was a pleasure," she assured her, reaching the counter and slipping back behind it.
