It had been a quiet week. Kyle was still dealing with the aftermath of Derek's visit last weekend. Today, he was dealing by mopping. Always with the mopping.

Rose had come down to her afternoon training early enough to stop by T&C and check on Kyle. He'd seemed a bit quiet this week, and even in her incredibly bad mood, she'd noticed a bit.

She followed Apu's directions to find Kyle and his mop in the back. "Shiny," she commented with a quick smile.

Kyle looked up from a spot that was clean enough, but that he seemed to be focused on. "I get stuck into my work."

"All work and no play makes Kyle a dull boy," she teased. "Wanna take a quick break?"

"Sure," he nodded and set the mop aside. "Hey Apu!" Kyle called. "I'm going to take my break!" He nodded towards the front of the store. "What's up?"

She shrugged, giving him a lopsided grin. "Got down early for training and thought I'd come bother since I haven't seen ya all week."

"Oh," he replied, nodding. "I haven't really been around." He'd been out in the Preserve making sure his caches were properly stocked and ready to go. "You okay after the weekend?"

"I've been reassured I don't look like a raccoon anymore," Rose said lightly. "What about you?"

"I've been better," he admitted. "I'll be better."

She bumped into him lightly. "Weird to run into your brother then?"

With his hands shoved in his pockets, he bumped back into her. "Weird doesn't even cover it. It changes everything."

"How d'you mean?" Rose asked, pushing the door to the shop open and holding it for him.

Kyle took a few steps outside, out of the reach of the door, then waited for her. "I'm not alone anymore," he said, looking back at Rose. "That came out wrong. For a while, it was me and Star and it was good, but there's only so much a nine year old girl who doesn't talk can watch your back. And I know the people in the Resistance would always watch my back, but it's different with him. I'm not explaining it properly." He was getting frustrated.

"He's family," Rose said, catching up to him. She thought that was what he met at least. "It's different, right? You don't feel like you owe 'em anything for watching out."

He gave a firm nod. "It's unconditional and absolute. At home, that means a lot."

Rose nodded. "Wish you'd gone back with him?"

"Yes and no," Kyle admitted. "I don't want him to disappear again or do something stupid like getting killed before I see him again, but I'm supposed to be here now and that's not a bad thing. More I wish he was here."

Rose - wouldn't mind that at all.

"Could talk him into teaching," she suggested.

That got a sharp laugh out of Kyle. "He wouldn't know what to do with someone who wasn't already a fighter."

"You guys had to learn sometime, right?" Rose asked curiously. "And a lot of people here are - maybe not the same kind."

"Yeah, but then he'd get someone like Effy," he said, using an example from Sex Ed, "and his brain would break or he'd go get a gun."

Rose was pretty sure Effy would enjoy breaking Derek's brain.

"Hey, he couldn't be weirder than Deadpool," Rose pointed out.

Or as trigger happy. Well, maybe. That was a toss-up. "Nowhere near as weird," Kyle agreed. "I'd love him to teach. I think everyone could learn a lot from him." Hero worship? Maybe a little. "But I don't think he'd go for it."

Maybe a little.

"You never know," she said. "I never would have thought Dimitri would come here to teach me. He's too dedicated."

"Maybe he's dedicated to you too."

Rose looked down quickly before she could react to that particular statement.

"Your brother looked pretty dedicated to you too," she pointed out.

"Which is why he'll stay and fight at home. I have to go back some time. The more metal he can get rid of, the safer home will be." It was the logic he'd use if the situation was reversed.

Rose chuckled, eyeing him. "Is that what he said or is that what you'd do?"

Sounded like a guardian thing, yeah.

"What I'd do, and I learned most of what I know from him." And Dad and Sergeant Orozco.

Rose nodded. "You guys use guardian logic." Which was a high compliment coming from her. She gave him a smile. "I'm glad you didn't go back too."

Kyle raised a teasing eyebrow. "You'd miss me?"

"It's possible," Rose agreed, smirking back.

"Possible, huh," he said, looking as if he was seriously considering her words. The seriousness didn't last. "I guess I can live with that."

Rose laughed at him. "Who else would help me keep Mr. Bond from going home with a student?"

"You don't need me for that," Kyle pointed out, looking innocent but acting far from it. "You could agree to go home with him, then club him over the head."

"Or I could just go home with him," she considered, pretending to be serious. "Nah, the pornstache was too much."

"Way too much," Kyle said, shaking his head. "I've seen some pretty bad facial hair, but that's probably the worst." This coming from the guy whose facial hair would one day become iconic once he could actually grow some. "That was pretty funny," he admitted.

"That was awesome," Rose agreed. "And I so wish I had video." She eyed him wonderingly. "So - if you start growing really bad facial hair, you don't mind me smacking you?"

"If I start growing any facial hair, it'll be cause for celebration. But if it gets out of hand after that, you can smack me. Remind me what you're smacking about though. I'll probably forget." Or lose track of smackable offenses.

She snickered. "If your brother's anything to go by, you'll get some eventually."

...some facial hair.

"Derek's always been hairy."

"That's an - attractive image," Rose snickered.

These pretzels are making me thirsty.
