When Tino arrived today, he found that Adrian had made it to work before he did.

"Don't look so shocked, I ran out at home," Adrian explained, holding up his drink in a toast.

Tino looked disappointed but at least he hadn't had to get the drink for him.

"Gin and tonic, please," Mina said, sitting at the bar. She had a few papers with her that she was reading over. Documents from the apartments that needed her attention.

Drink moddedly in hand, Jack nodded a greeting down the bar to Miss Murray. "Good evening," he said, manners firmly engaged. "It's been some time. How are you?"

Mina nodded back, a pleased smile playing across her features. "It has, indeed. I have found myself rather content of late. Several minor surprises have kept me on my toes, as well as a few major ones. But nothing unpleasant, thankfully."

She closed the folio that held her documents. "And yourself, young sir?"

"A bad day, but a good few weeks, so I suppose it evens out," Jack said. "Which is to say -- I'm content as well."

"Good," Mina said. "Though I do hope the day wasn't particularly awful."

"I'll get over it," Jack said, with the slightest smile. "I disagreed with one of my teachers. She did not appreciate the way I presented my viewpoint."

He took a sip. "I did not appreciate the way she presented the lesson. But I'm the one with yardwork for the week, so there you go."

"I see," Mina said. "May I ask what the lesson was, that was so disagreeable?"

"Tino, you heard the lady," Adrian ordered, setting him off to work. He then turned to Mina, noticing the papers. "Tell me you didn't bring work to a bar. There are better places with that, with much better lighting."

"Well, you've put me in an awkward position," Mina said. "Either I admit to the fact, and my poor choice of action, or I lie to a strange man, which hardly seems proper. Though I shall go with the lying option, I believe. I have no idea what work you speak of."

She closed her folio and smiled as if it wasn't even there.

"That's much better," Adrian smiled. "Though I would be curious what the work you have no idea about is, but since you have no idea, I guess I can't ask."

Mina extended a hand. "Perhaps I should introduce myself," she said. "Miss Mina Murray, manager of the Mauvaise Chance Apartments."

"Adrian Ivashkov," he said, taking her hand to shake, "I technically work here."

Meanwhile Tino handed her her drink.

"I see you leave all the real work to Tino?" Mina remarked, amused. "Or are you a leader by delegation?"

Jack was still disgruntled from religions class when he got to the bar. Usually he didn't drink alone, but he didn't feel like tracking anyone down. "Cognac," he told the bartender, then changed his mind. "No. Vodka tonic. Please."

"Are you sure?" Adrian asked, looking amused. "Tino can manage both."

"I'll start with the vodka and switch if I don't like it," Jack promised, then tilted his head. "I haven't met you, have I? I'm Jack."

"Adrian Ivashkov." Maybe one day he'd stop introducing himself with his last name. That day would not be today. "I'm relatively new, enough that meeting new people for the first time isn't just embarrassing."

"Ivashkov," Jack repeated, rolling it a little. "Russian? Well, Russian American."

He smiled. "I'm glad I haven't been totally oblivious,. What brings you to town?"

"Good guess," he replied. "I needed a bit of a change for a while and this was as good a place to do it. It's definitely a chance..." One he was loving, too.

"It is that," Jack asked, wondering if Adrian was going to finish the sentence. "I'm sure you've gotten the full run-down on why this place isn't like anywhere else."
