The Lighthouse, and the museum and gift shop were open. Tully was ready to show people the tower, or sell them stuff. The museum was a self guided tour. In the gift shop could be found just about any kind of Lighthouse knick knacks. Plus books and videos.

It was kind of the off season, but he'd still gotten a few enthusiasts come visit. As he was looking at their entry in the book (there was a place where people could write down their names and where they were from and little comments), Tully heard the distinct sound of footsteps in the hall. No one was there.

"They didn't hurt anything." he assured the ghost.

A place that was hiring. After being somewhat driftless and aimless since arriving, it seemed a godsend from the Darkness itself and Lia was more than happy to duck her head inside the Lighthouse and inquire about one of those jobs.

"Are you truly hiring? I could certainly use a job...though I don't know what kind of skills you're expecting."

"I am truly hiring." Tully smiled. "What sort of work experience do you have?"

"Not...much of anything. I was a queen before I came here," Lia admitted. "I know how to manage things, vaguely speaking, and I'm good with plants. Hopefully, charm will make up for the rest of it?"

"Charm is definitely a good thing." Tully nodded. "But where are my manners? I'm Tully Mars, light keeper, and owner of this establishment."

An exiled queen? Wow.

"Lia Ardelia, former queen of Dena Nehele and aimless in search of purpose," she returned, grin quick and easy again. It was easy to be happy in this place.

"I know all about that." Tully chuckled. "Not about being a queen, but the being aimless part. Do you know anything about lighthouses or museums?" His tone clearly said that it wasn't a problem if the answer was no.

He was just kind of happy anyone had finally come looking for a job.

"Well, I'm fond of old things, if that helps any," Lia said, thinking it over. "I have a great appreciation for art. Either of those of any use?"

"It's definitely a start." he nodded. "There's plenty of art for sale in the gift shop, and I've set up a mini gallery in the museum of lighthouse related things. What I'm looking for is someone to work in the gift shop, and who can give visitors a history of the place, let them into the tower if they're interested.

"I'm also thinking of training more light keepers if that would interest you."

Lia's eyes lit up at that. The lighthouse, really?

"I would love that, actually. I think to start I'd probably be better off in the gift shop but eventually I'd love to be in the lighthouse itself."

"I like your enthusiasm. Two questions, are you familiar with America's monetary system, and when can you work?"

"I have figured it out since I arrived," Lia said quickly, "And right now, if you'll have me."

"Right now works. Later we can figure out a specific schedule. Let me start by giving you a tour of the place. And maybe you could tell me a bit about yourself?"

"All right. Lia, as I said," she said brightly. "I'm from Dena Nehele, which is a territory in Terreille. It's sort of parallel to this place, but different in a lot of ways."

"So it's another dimension, not another planet?" The museum itself was rather simple. One half of the building had been set up with some rooms looking as they had during the early days of the house. Then on the bottom floor there were a few displays about Lighthouse history in the Bay, and this one in particular. Lots of photos, and a list of the past keepers.

Lia nodded. "Exactly. Completely different dimension from this one and it seems...a little more archaic."

"Not so much modern technology then? That must have been tough to get used to."

The gift shop was next. Lots of Lighthouse stuff. Imagine that. "You get a fifty percent discount in here if anything strikes your fancy."

Lia's eyes gleamed a little. "Oh, I can imagine half my cheque will go to you."

"The woman who left me this place would love you I think." Tully laughed. "Come to think of it, she was named after a queen." He pointed across the central hallway.

"That half of the house is where I live."

Lia nodded, noting its position in relation to the rest of the place. "Which queen was she named for, if you don't mind my asking?"

"Cleopatra. She was a queen of Ancient Egypt. According to legend she was one of the most beautiful women in history." Outside he pointed out the workshed, and of course, the tower.

"Would you like to see the top?"

Lia nodded, impossibly excited about seeing the rest of the lighthouse.

"I would, yes. This place is utterly fascinating."

"Oh yeah, Cleopatra would have loved you." Tully smiled, leading the way to the tower.

"It's a bit of a climb." he warned her. "But the view is worth it in my opinion."

And it was quite a climb. a tight, steep spiral staircase led up to the top. But it was perfectly safe (Tully had spent half a year making sure), and the view from there was quite impressive.

It was impressive and Lia spent a few long moments just staring at the world around her before turning back to look at Tully.

"It's absolutely breathtaking."

"It really is. I keep meaning to take my boat out while the light's on and see the school framed by the beam, but it's getting too cold for that now. The weird thing is, when they built this, that half of the island, wasn't there."

He pointed to the school and the town immediately surrounding it. "Is this the first lighthouse you've ever seen?"

Lia nodded. "We don't have them where I'm from. We're fairly far from the sea."

"I grew up about as far from the sea as you can on this continent. But I always wanted to go to the ocean." He fingered the wooden gecko pendant he wore.

"And now you've achieved it," Lia said softly, happy for him. "I find it soothing, the ocean."

Technically this was the bay, but it was close enough. "I don't know if I'd be able to sleep without being able to hear or smell it these days. How long have you been in town?"

"Since September," Lia explained. "I've kept to myself a lot since then...I've just been trying to feel things out."

Tully nodded. "We all have our own time for that sort of thing. Was it the first time you'd been to the coast? Or, a coast? Or better yet, what's the strangest thing you've seen so far?"

"It's both for me," she admitted. "I'm from the mountains. Now the other, I'm going to have to think about that...hmm. I'm not sure, to be honest. What about you?"

"Hmm, it's a toss up. Between my horse, and some inanimate objects turning Human, and me turning into a woman."

Lia arched an eyebrow. "A woman. Really? I didn't think that was entirely possible, even in this place."

"I've come to realize that nothing around here is impossible." He'd made a rather nice looking woman at least. "Way I understand it a few of the women on the island became Men for a day too."

"That's insane," Lia said, shaking her head in disbelief. "Some kind of potion or something?"

"This island is insane." Tully grinned. "I got saved from some old enemies not too long ago by gremlins. And I don't know if anyone's ever quite explained how it all happens."

Lia shook her head. "And here I thought coming here would be more relaxing than home."

"It might still be. Just...interesting and exciting too."
