Homecoming Weekend Brunch, Sunday Morning in the Park

There hadn't been too much trouble arranging the brunch in the park. Jennifer had enlisted the help of various people, and even got people like that scary teacher Mr. Dukes to help pitch in.

There was a harvest theme in the tent, with the tablecloths and napkins all in reds, yellows and oranges. There were centerpieces on the tables of cornucopias with edible fruits! There was also, of course, every kind of brunch food imaginable set up at the buffet table. There were even some food items there that didn't even qualify as brunch. And for some reason, there were biscuits baked in the shape of fish.

Jennifer found them oddly tasty.

Parker sighed, looking away. "I'm hoping that the ones who can, will want to work for me. Or rather, with me. Once they're out, I'm not going to kid myself that there's any question that I'll be their 'boss.' I suspect I'll be the person doing the paperwork." Which was fine. The money, the numbers; that was her one part of genius. "The ones that aren't... functional in the normal world," like Angelo, God. "Will be looked after. Somewhere where the threat of the consequences of failure won't constantly be held over their heads."

"Why do you want them?" Karla asked quietly. "Out of the goodness of your heart? Just trying to get them away from the people who are hurting them? What's your angle, Parker?"

"Who says I only have one?" Parker gave her an edged smile. "I'd mostly be happy if they just weren't working for the people they're currently entangled with. Their work is being mis-used. Twisted." She was quiet a moment, and said, "If you can find a cure, you can also find a way to spread a disease. Predict how to avoid a terrorist attack, plan one. Protect people from earthquakes, commit sabotage. The world is less safe because they're prisoners of the Centre." She held open one hand, then said quietly, "There are reasons too personal to tell you." Mom. Angelo. Jarod. "But here's one you can probably understand. My family owns that place. And I don't have the patience to wait until I inherit it to make changes."

Karla looked away at that. "You don't trust you family to not abuse these people?" she asked, voice soft. "They're harming their people and through them, the world?"

"My family love me," Parker said without a trace of irony or guile. Total truth. "I'm safe from them. I probably always will be, if I take no action. No one else is."

"I see. And you're willing to work against them anyway?" Karla asked. "You could stay warm and safe in the protected bosom of your family. No problems, no worries, no bother."

"No point." Parker's smile turned fierce, hearing Jarod's voice in that question, as an accusation, over and over. All your shoes. "I've been raised to achieve things. To be the best. What better goal is there? Seriously? Otherwise, why shouldn't I just starting skinning people and wearing them as clothes? It's the same thing." Miho covered in Lyle's blood, a handful of diamonds and her last shred of conscience paid up; another step down a similar road. But she could still make her own. "If I thought I was a truly good person, I'd wait. I'd do it even more slowly. I'm not. It wouldn't work. I have to take the risk now."

Karla nodded. "I understand," she said. "I just needed to hear you say it. I needed to know your reasons."

"Fair enough. You haven't known me for four years." Parker gave her a small smile. "You might be able to help soon. I'm guessing your main reason would be because you're a healer. And because some version of you 'owes' me. Think about the kind of people I'm talking about though," she said, serious. "And what kind of risk there'd be to you, if you got captured. Don't give me an answer on this yet." She put her sunglasses back on. "There'll be time enough to be sure."

Karla nodded. "I'll think," she promised. "Though I do have other skills that could come in handy. Like the ability to pass through walls. And fly. Few other things." She called in a notebook and pen (no fancy business cards for her) and wrote down her number. "Call me. We'll talk again."

Parker handed over one of hers (M. Parker - Oxford, England - 01865 - 222333), and took the one Karla had offered. "Thank you for listening. I appreciate it." She smirked. "One hell of an interesting weekend." She grinned, remembering Max. "And fun as well."

"Full of surprises all the way around," Karla agreed with a slightly self-conscious grin. "But fun, yes."
