Was there a holiday today? Algren hadn't noticed.

Or, rather, he knew full well what day it was, and he was pointedly ignoring it. It had only just become an annual tradition back in his own time (thank you, Abe), and it was no tradition of his, and so he was going to get on with the 'humbug' early and just hold on to that notion clear on through Christmas if he could get away with it.

To hell with turkey. There was inventory to be done.

Wellspring Arms was open, in spite of all the giving of thanks and such that was going about, and Algren was busy being crotchety and just generally insufferable.

Mina stopped in, a smile on her face.

"Mr. Algren," she greeted.

"Ms. Murray." Nathan glanced up, a touch of a smile finding its way to the corners of his own mouth. "Good to see you."

... Even bitter, bitter men could appreciate good company, here.

"Are you not celebrating the colonial holiday?" Mina said. She was somewhat amused.

"America has had a funny habit of taking away anything it's ever given me to be thankful for in the first place," Nathan replied, putting forth an effort to look more amused than he actually was, now. "Let everyone else have their holiday. I'm quite content to come in to work, instead."

"And here I was, hoping to invite you to my apartment," Mina said. "So you could show me how one truly celebrates it."

Nathan gave her a bit of a wry smile, at that.

"I'm afraid I'm somewhat out of practise."

Somewhat. Considering he was older than the holiday was, and he'd attempted to actually celebrate it... Once? Twice?

"Well sir, then I'd love to give you the opportunity to practice again," Mina said. "Unless you find yourself unwanting, of course."

"Considering the company I'd be keeping," Nathan mused, "I think it would be a shame if I were to decline."

That would be a 'yes,' then.

"I believe a turkey is traditional," Mina said. "And a bit of... stuffing."

"To go with the turkey. Of course."

... Really, though, who prepared a turkey without stuffing?

"Then I have purchased wisely," Mina said. "I have a turkey in the oven already."

Try though he might, there was really no way for Nathan to hold back the chuckle that was threatening to escape his throat at that.

"Dare I ask if that turkey is intended for just the two of us?"

He was predicting leftovers for months.

"It is a small bird," Mina said. "Though I shall be eating turkey sandwiches for quite some time, I fear."

"Well, then I suppose it's fortunate that counting inventory works up an appetite."

It really didn't. It wasn't as though he was actually doing anything. The stock count hadn't exactly changed much since the last time he'd done inventory, after all.

"When can I expect you to call?" Mina asked. "Just so I know when to have the side dishes ready."

Algren considered for all of... Oh, a heartbeat or two.

"Considering it's a holiday, I can't imagine it would be difficult for me to leave early," he noted. "Would three be too soon?"

"Certainly not," Mina said. "Though it does mean I must take my leave quite shortly."
