Two weeks in a row Adrian had to set up for a party. Well, he made Tino set up for a party. He had to admit that since this one didn't involve Rose, his interest for this one went way down in comparison, but he'd still be partaking of the alcohol anyway, so that made things a little better.

Jack fussed about like a hostess, putting flowers here and candles there, bothering Tino to make sure the bar was fully stocked, and generally being a perfectionist. He wanted Emma to have the best night possible.

When everything seemed as done as it could be, he sank into a chair with a glass of good cognac and watched for guests.

With his job done (and he'd done it well, thank you), Alex grabbed a drink and did a bit of wandering around the edges of the crowd. He left the fussing and checking to Jack, who was far better at it.

He would just drink and maybe be a little social with those that arrived.

Adrian might be disappointed that it wasn't his shining face that drew Rose back on this Monday. But she wasn't going to miss her 'wife's' birthday party, and so she was hanging out with a drink.

There was no reason to miss this week's birthday party--in fact, while Karla didn't think Emma would be able to break through her inner barriers to make her spend break week thinking she was a monkey or anything, why take chances?

So she was here, a glass of wine in her hand, impressed by the work that had gone into the party.

Email was not a manner of communication that worked very well on the technology challenged Dog. Luckily Rose had informed her of the party and so Beka'd not have to be embarrassed about missing her big sibling's birthday party.

She'd be sticking to twilsey's, though.

A day with two parties in it was a good way to make up for the fire drill the night before, so Kennedy stopped in at Emma's party before heading back for the Yuletide one. She wasn't averse to having a drink or two and hanging out for a bit first, though.

Even with a few parties under his belt, Alex still wasn't the best at presents and he probably wasn't ever going to be good. Jack dropped off a small box containing a birthstone necklace. An envelope held a print-out confirming restaurant reservations in New York for later that week.

He did enjoy spoiling her.

Rose had two presents for Emma. The first (http://www.weddingmountain.com/p-9673-09-bride-baseball-shirt.aspx) was a total regifting from the "presents" Bond had given after that one weekend. The second was probably more to Emma's taste as it was a gift certificate to Barney's. (Rose so knew better than try to pick out clothes for her)

Beka hadn't had much warning, so the birthday gift had taken up most of her day. She'd looked into clothes first, but when she'd find a nice kashmir scarf, she'd remembered Emma'd not want sommat to cover up with. Clothes were scratched from her list and Beka had moved on. Knives weren't an option, Emma was dangerous without needing any weapons. Books didn't feel like Emma's style either and aught electronic simply confused Beka.

Pounce had offered stealing another kitten, but Beka thought he'd done enough damage on that front. In the end, she'd remembered how much Emma had enjoyed the spa and so there was one certificate to Theodoric's and an envelope good for one shopping trip without complaints. She may regret the latter at some point.

Kennedy knew that her tastes didn't run the same way as Emma's did, so the card she left on the table contained several sizable gift cards (so impersonal, she knew, but it had been short notice) to pricey Manhattan boutiques and a scrawled note promising-- oh, Kennedy, you don't know what you're getting yourself into, do you?-- a spin in the Ferrari after Christmas, since she'd be bringing it back with her.

Emma was, indeed, there, and actually pleasantly surprised by the whole thing. Both boys deserved brownie points for pulling this off without her finding out about it.

For now, she was going to sit here and enjoy her drink. She hadn't had a party since she was six or seven, and this was far nicer than her last two birthdays had been.

So the one part of party planning Jack had not been able to pull off perfectly was getting a birthday cake at the last minute. The counter girl at Jeff had tried to sell him Hanukkah cakes, Christmas cakes, and random seasonal cakes until she finally remembered a birthday cake from the day before that had never been picked up.

Which was how Emma ended up with a black-iced cake with seafoam green trim, pale lavender roses, and totally the wrong name on it -- and a sheepish boy trying to delay the moment of unveiling.

Happy birthday, 'Betty Ann.'
