Caritas; Friday Evening

It was poor Tino all by his lonesome behind the bar tonight. It was hard to tell how he felt about this.

Oh wait--he's dancing to the music. Guess he's enjoying it.

[OH DEAR GOD I THOUGHT IT WAS SATURDAY. I'M SORRY]

Jake waved Tino over and ordered a beer. And promptly got into a heated argument over what kind of beer. Apparently, according to Tino, "beer" was just too vague and wouldn't do.

"I told you, I don't care, man!" Jake insisted. Tino gave him a pointed look and then went back to polishing the counter with exaggerated care. "Fine, fine. Get me a Keith's," he said, with a roll of his eyes.

Robin glanced over when she heard the other guy talking to Tino, and tilted her head to hear a little better. "Newfie?" she ventured curiously. "Or am I losing my touch?"

"Born and bred Townie, I am," Jake acknowledged with a nod. "Don't tell me you're Canadian too?"

"Halifax and Vancouver," she said with a proud smile. "Divorced parents. And you're new, which means I'm neglecting my job." She leaned over, extending a hand. "Robin Scherbatsky, Deputy Mayor. Welcome to Fandom, which is like...thirty percent Canadian at this point."

"Jake Doyle," he said, taking up the handshake. "Currently wandering but considering a stay, at least for a while."

"Oh?" Robin's brow spiked up, just a bit. "You're not sleeping on a park bench or anything, right? I get in trouble for things like that. Kinda my job to make sure the new kids settle in all right, even if you're just passing through."

"Crackin down on vagrants, are ye?" Jake asked. "No worries, I've got a nice hotel room all set up for the moment."

"More of a safety thing," she replied easily. "It's February, and even if we're from the frozen North, people tend to look down on freezing to park benches. What brings you to our fair little hamlet, anyway?"

"Things was getting a bit complicated, back home," Jake shrugged. "So I got in my car and drove for a bit." Where "a bit" apparently meant "across three provinces and eight states".

"That seems like the MO for a lot of our new people," Robin noted thoughtfully. "In any case, I work here on Tuesdays, or swing by town hall if you need anything. Including a touch of home. I have a Mountie and a Canucks hockey set you can borrow, even."

"A Mountie, huh?" Jake echoed. "Truth be told, we don't see much of them 'round St. John's. Glad to see another fan of the hockey, though," he added diplomatically. He wasn't going to mention that as a Newfoundlander, he was practically obligated to be a Red Wings fan, thanks to Danny Cleary's presence on the team.

"It's the greatest sport there is," Robin said, nodding. "Don't let Americans lie to you about football."

"Nothing wrong with football, b'y," Jake countered. "The Grey Cup's good fun to watch."

Canadian football was totally superior to American.

"Eh." Robin waved her hand back and forth. "I mean, sure, Canadian football's fine, and it's certainly better than, like, figure skating. And I love a party, so the Superbowl's decent, too, since I've been in the States for most of my adult life at this point. But there is nothing as good as hockey. Nothing at all."

"True enough," Jake admitted, lifting his beer up and tilting it slightly in her direction. "To our game," he said solemnly, before taking a swig.

"Scotch, neat," Robin ordered from Tino, beaming as she settled at the bar.

She gave him a look when he looked at her incredulously, and added, "It's the only bar anyone goes to in this town, for Christ's sake, and ice-skating is on. I'm allowed in on my night off. Hop to."
