The Imperial Junke Yard, Sunday

Marcus stood in the gateway for a couple of minutes. He'd come down to take a look, expecting the junkyard to be still underwater. Instead, it looked like it always had: no mud, no damage, no sign of any kind that yesterday it had been at the bottom of a lake.

A quick check revealed the shed was equally untouched: fridge, radio, creatively acquired tools, all where he'd left them, all in perfect working order. Even the ugly plaid couch was the same, though that might have been improved by a good soaking.

Of all the strange things he'd encountered since ending up on this too-small island, this might just be the weirdest.

He's around and about.

The water being gone surprised him. He'd made plans to get the boat to the big water and to rig it and everything. But it was all gone. "What happened?"

Marcus glanced down at his still small shadow. He'd half expected Kyle to show up again. "No idea."

"But what did you do to make it all go away?"

He glanced down again, considering Kyle, then went with, "I pulled the plug." Hey, it was as good an explanation as any, and might save him from more questions.

"You could have kept the boats," he protested.

"Disappeared with the water," he said after a brief moment. "Might be something else to make a decoy out of."

"Nothing ready made," Kyle shrugged. "We'd have to build from scraps." He changed the topic. "What do you do here all day?"

"Fix things. Work on the shed." Marcus walked forward a few steps, reaching down to pick up a piece of metal, idly turning it in his hands. "It's something to do." He narrowed his eyes as he turned to face Kyle, studying the kid. "What've you been doing since yesterday?"

He shrugged again. "Stuff. Why do you want to know?"

It was a good question; pity Marcus wasn't going to answer it. "You been eating?" he asked instead.

"I found an apple last night."

A look of irritation passed briefly over Marcus' face, and he rubbed the back of his neck. "If I tell you to stay put, will you stay?"

"If I can look around your shed," Kyle bargained.

Yeah, that look of irritation was back, however briefly. "Deal. Don't break anything," he warned.

"I don't break things unless I mean to," Kyle shot back and went to have a look.

Marcus' eyes narrowed, but he didn't say anything, simply turned on his heel and walked off, out the gate of the junkyard, heading towards the centre of town.

After looking at the TV and the radio and fridge, Kyle laid down on the ugliest couch ever and took a nap.

Marcus appeared in the doorway, a bag in one hand. He stopped when he saw the kid was asleep, paused briefly, then moving quietly, set the bag on the crate near the couch. "Hey," he said, voice low.

Kyle startled and quickly sat up, immediately on the defensive. When he saw it was only Marcus, he relaxed.

Marcus held still until Kyle relaxed, then pointed one finger at the bag. It wasn't exactly a meal encompassing the four food groups, but it was food: a burger, fries and a coke. "Eat."

He gave Marcus a confused look. "Why'd you get me food?"

Because he remembered what it was like to be a kid on his own and hungry. "You hungry or not?"

"I'm always hungry," he replied and reached for the bag. The smell was incredible and his mouth was watering and his stomach was gurgling at the thought of food. The burger wrapper didn't stand a chance and neither did the burger. "Thanks," he said with his mouth full.

He didn't reply, just watched Kyle eat for a moment, then moved to lean in the doorway, carefully leaving enough room for Kyle to get past, looking out at the junkyard.

"Aren't you going to eat too?"

"Not hungry," he replied, glancing back at Kyle.

"You're huge. How can you not always be hungry?"

He turned around so he was facing Kyle, amused now. "I eat. More than an apple, anyway."

Kyle watched him for a few moments while he chewed his food. "What do you want for the food?"

Marcus thought about it. Briefly considered saying 'nothing', but didn't; you couldn't trust things you got for nothing. "Two things. First thing, you can sweep out the shed. Broom's over there." He nodded towards the corner.

He gave a suspicious look. "What's the other thing?"

The look amused him, but he didn't let it show. "You get hungry again, come and find me. Plenty of work I can give you to do around here." And with luck, the kid'd be back to normal soon and would no longer be Marcus' problem. Not that he was Marcus' problem now. "Deal?"

Kyle shrugged. "Sure. That sounds fair." A little one-sided for something as important as food, but sometimes you came across someone willing to give you a break. "But if we're even, I can walk away whenever I want."

Marcus simply nodded in response.

"Can I finish the rest before I sweep?"

"Take your time." He pushed off the edge of the door frame, stepping out of the shed. "I'll be around."

"Watch out for boats," he called after Marcus and then crammed the rest of the burger into his mouth. He tried not to gag.

It's a junkyard, and so is filled with all manner of interesting things.

True fact: I considered 'noredpens' for Marcus' journal name. But that would have been silly.
