Luke's Diner, June 14 (Monday)

Lacey was hardly what you'd call a fanatic, but every time the World Cup rolled around she got a little into the whole fever of it, in her own not-entirely-informed way.

The worrisome part wasn't how she'd shown up dressed thematically, complete with shinguards and cleats; the worrisome part was how she kept checking the diner for spontaneously-developing nests of angry hornets.

The staff, meanwhile, was conspiring to get hold of a few dozen of those vuvuzelas.

Who wouldn't know what an own goal was if it danced in front of her.

Angua's head tilted at the get-up. Particularly the shin-guards

"You know," she said, taking her usual seat, "no offense, Lacey, but I don't think your armour would actually be very effective in actual battle."

This was coming from a girl in a chestplate; she should know.

"Unless the clothes are still attacking, and then it'll be like fighting fire with fire."

"What? Oh, gosh, no, I don't actually play," Lacey said hurriedly; the awkward way she walked in the cleats (and checked the floor nervously for any sign of damage with each step) might back up the statement. "I couldn't. I mean, it's all so violent, and there could be concussions, and . . ."

She got a little creeped out just thinking about it, so she waved a hand. "Never mind. The clothes actually attacked?"

"According to the reports I've been filing all day," said Angua, with a ghost of a grin. She shook her head together. "I wish every Monday involved reading about a man fighting for his life against his own trousers."

"Wow," said Lacey, who was fastidious about her laundry; "I'm glad I missed out on that. I had a couple of cleaning rags doing St. Vitus's dance, but that was about it."

She rather imagined that Hank's wardrobe was going to rise up and try to smother him while walking down the street one day. It would be viscerally satisfying, and with her luck, it would happen while she wasn't there to witness it.

"You, uh . . . enjoy reading those reports?"

Note to self: try not to get into any of them.

"Sure," Angua shrugged a shoulder. "Because they're not happening to me."

"Isn't that a little, um . . ." Lacey tapped a finger against her lips. "Are you supposed to read them?"

She meant for amusement, but that would make her sound slightly more like she knew what she was talking about.

"I have to know where I'm filing them, don't I?"

True, you didn't have to read read them to figure that out, but that was beside the point.

"Yeah, but . . ." Lacey tilted her head. "Do you have subfolders for 'amusing yet harmless' and 'moderately serious and unfunny' and things like that?"

She wouldn't be surprised if they did, mind. Not in Fandom.

"And one marked specifically for teal deer," said Angua. "I try to avoid those."

Not because of how long they all seemed, of course. But because just the mere thought of it made her hungry.

She had to ask. She really, really had to.

"Does that one need its own file cabinet?"

"Three of them, actually."*

". . . wow," Lacey said after a moment. "Do you get a lot of teal deer reports? Because after a while, you might need an entire file room for those."

"I think one of the past officers was working on transferring them all electronically," Angua said, "to help with that, but it's gone to hell since then. Probably since Vimes got on."

That last bit, for the record, was said somewhat admiringly.

"Ohhhhhhhh," Lacey said with a knowing nod. "Not a fan of the digital world, is he? Or you?"

"Where we're from," Angua explained, "avoiding technology is generally advisable, as technology usually involves something small, persistent, and annoying."

She'd ask if Lacey had seen her Gooseberry yet but she didn't dare mention it for the likelihood of waking the damn thing and getting its attention.

. . . no, she doesn't actually think this Idiot's Guide to the World Cup (http://ht.ly/1XBL5) is for real.

It took her a minute. Shut up.
