Luke's Diner [Tuesday, June 22]

Sookie still felt guilty about missing her shift last week, though she figured, "Sorry, I was at my grandmother's wake," was probably an adequate excuse.

Either way, she was in no mood to deal with the kitchen staff, and thankfully, with a look at her stormy expression, they decided to leave her alone with little prompting.

Horseradish Cheese Grits
Chocolate Walnut Pie.

Luke's is open, though your waitress is doing her best to distract herself.

Don't deal with Sookie!

She's not exactly as cheery as usual.

It was odd to walk into a place that made food with other food, so Rilla settled for bringing flowers when she stepped into the diner.

"Does Tina miss me terribly?" she asked with a small, slightly tentative smile.

Sookie looked up from where she was studiously organizing receipts, and gave Rilla a little smile. "She's been crying non-stop," she said, which was a lie but it didn't matter.

"Perhaps these will make her feel better," Rilla replied, holding out the bouquet of wildflowers.

"My cat isexcessively fond of flowers," Sookie decided, her smile widening a little as she took the bouquet and went to get a glass to put them in. "I'm sure they'll cheer her up."

"Make her share them with you," Rilla advised with a smile.

"I might just have to put them out of her reach. She's kinda short," Sookie replied thoughtfully.

"If you give her one to bat around I'm certain she won't begrudge you the rest," Rilla said.

"She may have to content herself with a cat toy," Sookie decided. "Was she a pain while I was gone?"

"She wasn't a moment's bother," Rilla said. "Was it horribly terrible at home?"

On the one hand -- yes, it had been horribly, horribly terrible. On the other...this was Rilla. She couldn't exactly be all, "Well, I almost died at the hands of my grandmother's killer, until a bunch of mutants and Karla gave him a lovely assortment of frostbite, burns, and mental illness. Also, I swore at the entire town, and met Elvis."

So instead she kept it simple. "Funerals are never all that fun," she replied with a small, humorless smile. "So, kinda."

"I am very sorry for your loss," Rilla said. "I've never been to a funeral."

"You're lucky," Sookie said, trying to keep upbeat. "Want some pie or something, honey?"

"Please," Rilla said with a smile. "Did you bake it?"

"I did," she said a little proudly, going to get a slice. "Chocolate walnut. It was...distracting."

"That sounds delicious," Rilla said, "and complicated, which I imagine was the point?"

"Pretty much," Sookie replied, setting a slice of pie before Rilla. "Distracting, all that jazz."

Rilla took a bite and closed her eyes. "Oh, this is wonderful. Have you tried your handiwork yet?" she asked, holding out the fork.

"I haven't," she admitted, eyeing Rilla. "It's not bad?"

Sookie was a little vain about her cooking.

"Try it," Rilla said. "I think it's fine, but you've seen my cookies."

Sookie grabbed a fork and took a pie of the pie. "It's decent," she decided proudly. "And your cookies aren't that...bad, sweetie. Just don't go teaming up with Bobby or Karla in the kitchen. Ever."

Rilla wrinkled up her nose at the mention of Karla. "Definitely not," she said. "And I'm never giving Mister Karev any of my baked goods again."

"Oh, goodness, don't say that to him," Sookie said, staring. "Alex isn't a very nice boy sometimes."

"Only sometimes?" Rilla replied. "He uses the most unbecoming language."

"Dirty thoughts, too," Sookie contributed. "But he can be funny."

Rilla looked dubious. "He can?"

"Occasionally. Mostly he just likes embarrassing me when we talk," she noted.

"I don't enjoy being embarrassed," Rilla said with the air of someone sharing a Great Secret.

"No one does, sweetie," she said, reaching out to pat her hand. "So don't talk to Alex. He'll do his best."

"There are certainly more pleasant people to chat with," Rilla said with a smile.

Sookie raised a brow. "Found yourself a boyfr -- a beau yet?"

Rilla's entire face turned red. "Heavens no."

"'Heavens no'?" Sookie repeated, giggling. "Honey, why? There're nice boys here."

"But I don't know anything about their families and my mother would never approve of me walking out unchaperoned," she said, wide-eyed.

"I'm gonna tell you a secret," she said, dropping her voice. "I've never met Bobby's parents, and I almost definitely never will. Times have changed, sweetie."

Rilla's hazel eyes grew wide. "Perhaps after my birthday?" she said.

That was useful. And boring.
