Science-and-extra Meet-up, The Cabin area, Monday afternoon after classes

Scully had texted a general invitation to the student body for the not-quite-club for Monday afternoon, out at the campground, to help with the reconstruction of the trebuchet, and discussion of any new science they were interested in.

She'd also gotten lemonade and cookies at Jeff, God of Biscuits. Trebuchet construction was thirsty work.

[open for all, especially for any geeks who'd be interested in that sort of thing. ]

Scully waved a wrench when she saw him, mouth quirking in a smile. "Those don't come entirely free for you, you know. Claudia told me how you helped wreck the first one as much as I did."

"Which is interesting because I distinctly remember being the one trying to stop her sledgehammer shennanigans," Peter said. "Or am I in some other was supposed to have been responsible?"

"You didn't knock her out?" Scully squinted, amused. "You didn't stay and knock me out, when I got destructive?"

"I particularly remember almost getting hit with that sledgehammer," Peter said. "And my own personal safety often wins out over siege equipment maintenance. It's just one of those weird quirks of mine."

He smirked, knowing full well how snarky that sounded.

Cookies and lemonade were good. Especially when Claudia wasn't the one who'd tried to make them.

Cookies while on perhaps a slightly extra long break from work? Even better.

"Hey. Glad you could make it," Scully said, stopping her basic construction to grab a glass of lemonade. "I remembered what you said about Hiccup, and I left him a message after I looked him up in the directory. I hope he got it."

"Cool. I think he'd definitely want to get in on the trebuchet." Claudia couldn't help the raised eyebrow at 'glad you could make it'. "Look at you, being all hostess-y."

"I will throw lemonade on you," Scully warned, even as her mouth twitched. "I hate hosting things. I'd rather give everyone a handout and then let them figure it out themselves."

"Dana was somehow insinuating I was supposed to have stopped you," Peter said. "Which I seem to recall I tried but that ended poorly."

He followed a few people to the meeting, curious as to what it may reveal.

Right now it's just a lot of parts, after various people got done wrecking it a few weeks ago.

Oh, gods. It was a mess. It would be easier to start from scratch, and he voiced it. "This used to be the trigger latch," he said, holding a twisted chunk of metal, now useless.

"Uh. Hi. I'm Dana Scully. Scully to people who know me." Scully gave a small, hesitant wave. "This isn't an official club. Or official anything. We just thought that some people might want to meet, on occasion, for science talks. Or projects." She paused, looking nervous. "So, if you have anything you want to talk about, feel free. We're working on a trebuchet in case of invasion. I'm looking into-- well, I was trying to look into the local physics, I'm not having much luck. So far they seem to break most conventional twenty-first century math. And physics. So. Say hi. Have some food. Bring up anything you're working on that you want help with or a second opinion or just to let people know. Thanks."

She was so not meant to be a public speaker if she didn't have an official report to give.

"I'm James, and I am not from this world. Most of your science appears as magic to me, not that I am a magician." He tilted his head a bit. "My world is on par with these," he said, gesturing to the destroyed trebuchet, "moreso than the other weapons you have here. With these, I am familiar."

Not so much the building of one as much as the firing of one and the running away from one.

"Well. Welcome to our world." Scully quirked a smile at him. "Most of us think science is anything that works on natural laws, I think. It doesn't have to be very advanced, just not depending on...uh. Special powers. Or emotion. I think." She paused. "Hard to be sure."

"Mechanical and electrical, not magic," he said. "Like that." He nodded at the poor sad trebuchet.

"Natural laws?" he asked. "What do you mean?"

"Yes, exactly. They work the same every time, no matter who's flipping the switch or pulling the lever," Scully explained. "You don't need to have more magical ability, or concentration, or willpower to make it work than anyone else. Because the physical limits and electrical potential stay the same. If they're constructed correctly, at least." She tilted her head. "Does your world have electricity in common use?"
