The bright pink bookcase that Harper had been working on last week was finished and now had a prominent place in the front window display. If potential customers were not blinded, they might see the sign proclaiming that all used furniture was 75% off. At that price, someone could put up with bright pink.

Who is wondering what else she could fix up around the store.

Momoko wasn't necessarily needing a new bookshelf, but the totally awesome shade of pink caught her eye as she passed and, curious, she stepped inside for a closer look.

Harper was very pleased to see a customer looking at the bookcase, especially one that she recognized from some of her previous classes. "Looks good, doesn't it?" she asked.

Momoko's eyes were huge and round. "It's awesome! I love it! How could someone not want to keep it?"

She didn't really need another bookshelf in her room, but it was pink!! so she was struggling internally.

"Sadly, sometime when people move, they can't all their furniture with them, so they sell it to me," said Harper, running her hand over the top of the bookshelf. "Then it's my job to find a good home for poor, abandoned pieces like this one."

"But it's PINK!" Momoko's disbelief knew no bounds.

And now she even felt sorry for it. "The poor abandoned thing. You must hate your job, coming in to find perfectly good things tossed away like this. And it's so cute! It would fit right at the end of my bed and be perfect!" It would stand out like a sore thumb. A sore pink thumb.

"It can be very difficult sometimes," said Harper with a dramatic sigh. "But when I find a new owner for one of these pieces, it completely makes up for the rough moments."

"I can totally understand. You are awesome for taking such good care of them, being here for them so they don't end up on the street somewhere." Momoko sighed as well.

And wondered who she could get to carry the bookshelf home. She was almost totally certain she was buying it, now.

"I couldn't live with myself, thinking that these poor pieces would be left out on the street, being wrecked by gremlins causing all sorts of mischief," said Harper, trying to get a sense of where she was in making the sale. "It really is a great deal with the promotional discount on used furniture. And if you need time to rearrange your room to fit the new piece, I could always hold it for you in the back room."

"Eh?! No way! I hadn't thought of the gremlins! I'm totally buying it now, the poor beautiful thing!" She reached for her purse, then had a horrible, horrible idea. "There aren't more, are there? Like a set? I don't want to break up a family, but I don't have much money right now..."

"No, she's all by herself, the poor thing," said Harper, trying to hide her glee at making the sale. "There aren't even matching pieces to go with it!"

She really should have used the leftover pink paint on an end table or something.

"She's all alone?!"

Translation: SOLD!

"Maybe you have something in pink that would match?" suggested Harper.

"I totally have a lot of pink things, but I don't have pink furniture. At least not here. I just have the regular dorm stuff?" She said sadly, pinching her lip, trying to think. "I don't think the school would like me painting it, but I could totally find some pink fabric to throw over some of it, and maybe a rug. As long as I don't get assigned a new roommate, it should be okay."

She looked up at Harper, "Right?"

"I'm sure you'll be fine!" said Harper. "It's a shame I don't have any pink rugs in stock, but I can keep my eyes open and let you know if anything comes in. I get new used stuff everyday."

Momoko beamed and held out her hand. "That would be totally awesome! I know we've had classes before, and I've seen you in the dorms and stuff, but I'm Momoko! I'm in room 307, so you can just stop by and let me know!"

"No problem, Momoko! I'm Harper, and I live almost right above you in 417," said Harper, smiling as she returned the handshake. "I'm sure something will come along that goes perfectly with your new bookcase."

Maybe if Hobby Lobby had pink yarn in stock, she could to work on crocheting a pink rug.

"I don't think I'll hold my breath," Momoko replied, smiling. "It took this long to find the perfect bookshelf! You said you could hold it for me? Can I pick it up on Monday?"

"Sure! Just give me a call before you're ready to come over, because I currently don't have someone working on Mondays. I wouldn't want you to get here and find the place all locked up," said Harper. "Here, I'll give you my cell phone number," she added, quickly writing it down on a scrap of paper.

"If it's easier, I can come back when there's someone here?" Momoko bounced in place as she waited, then took the number. "Thank you! I just have to find someone to help me carry it back and stuff!" She patted the bookcase fondly.

"Whatever works for you! I just hired someone for Wednesdays, and of course I'm here on Fridays," said Harper, putting a "SOLD" sign up on the bookcase. "It will be waiting here for you."

Time to wonder how many coats of paint you'll need to cover up all that pink paint.

This post reminds me that I still haven't finished painting my new-old patio furniture.
