There were hands. Hands without bodies.
And they wanted horseback rides.
They couldn't pay in cash, of course, having nowhere to carry it, but they were willing to trade the privelige for performing some of the chores about the stable, and so Firekeeper was perfectly willing to let them do so. Even if it was weird.
