A Clearing In The Preserve, Thursday Evening

This evening, there was a bit more activity going on in the preserve than the usual scampering and frolicking of the teal deer and the alots. Tonight, there were paper lanterns strung up through the branches and along the trees, there were tables set up in the clearing, and there was music. If it lacked a banner and balloons, they were hoping the glimmer of the lantern lights in the darkness made up for it.

Ino was turning seventeen, and there was only one thing to be done about it. Zack had sent out the e-mail yesterday, and he and Karla had taken care of the food and the cakes and the decorations, and, once Zack managed to get Ino to join them, they were going to celebrate!

Ino's face was a study of surprise for a moment, before she grinned over at Karla. "Traitor!" she carolled. "I thought we were the party planning team!"

"We are!" Karla assured her. "But that meant that I had to make sure your party was astral, right? You think Zack could have pulled of a party worthy of us if I hadn't helped?"

Clearly, Ino. Clearly.

"Besides, he wibbled at me. We've talked about his magical powers before. You can hardly blame me."

"I would've been happy with the picnic he'd suggested to get me here," she confessed, a bit sheepishly. "So, uh, I guess he could've pulled it off for me?"

"I'm sure you would have been," Karla said. She was pretty sure Zack would have been just as happy with the dinner on the beach Ino had used as the excuse to get him to his surprise party. "But your small picnic wouldn't have given the rest of us a chance to wish you a happy birthday, now would it?"

"Nooo," she said slowly. "But assumin' people would want to is kinda a big assumption."

Issues: Ino had them.

"And yet, here we are," Karla pointed out with a smile. "I don't think Zack was all that concerned about how much of an assumption that would be."

"Zack figures that as he adores me, everyone else will too," she said lightly. "I'm the one that spends all the time worryin' in this relationship."

"Well, maybe he hoped that your party would show you that at least some of your worrying was for nothing," Karla chided.

Though she was willing to bet that a lot of what was worrying Ino wasn't going to go away just because of a good party.

"And if it doesn't, we'll just make Hannibal dance for you instead. If that won't convince you, nothing will."

Ino laughed at that.

"Do you think he might dance?" she wondered. "I do like that idea."

And it neatly sidestepped any worrying issues!

"You're the birthday girl!" Karla said with a laugh. "He has to obey your requests, right? It was a very, uhh, interesting and athletic dance when I saw it, too."

"Ooooooh." She contemplated that. "He's already threatened to withhold my presents from me though. He don't listen well to the Birthday Queen."

"You could always threaten to withhold cake," Karla suggested. "That bring him around. And if it doesn't, then it's time to fight dirty."

She glanced around, looking for Zack. "We'll see if Hannibal can refuse puppy-eyes any better than we can."
