A Clearing In The Preserve, Thursday Evening

This evening, there was a bit more activity going on in the preserve than the usual scampering and frolicking of the teal deer and the alots. Tonight, there were paper lanterns strung up through the branches and along the trees, there were tables set up in the clearing, and there was music. If it lacked a banner and balloons, they were hoping the glimmer of the lantern lights in the darkness made up for it.

Ino was turning seventeen, and there was only one thing to be done about it. Zack had sent out the e-mail yesterday, and he and Karla had taken care of the food and the cakes and the decorations, and, once Zack managed to get Ino to join them, they were going to celebrate!

"You mean you didn't just age a whole year in a day?" Bruce asked. "Maybe that'll happen next year."

"Perish the thought!" she protested. "I'll be done with Fandom then and how would I explain that?"

"Magic?" Bruce suggested.

"We don't got magic at home," she said, a bit plaintively.

"'Fandom is weird and followed me home' wouldn't work?" Bruce asked.

"Might work on those who know 'bout Fandom," she admitted. "Though that ain't too many back there."

"You need to do a better job educating people about it," Bruce offered.

"Why would I do that?" Ino asked, wide-eyed. "And have more of them come here?"

"You don't want your friends from home to get the Fandom experience?" Bruce asked.

She waved one hand. "Let's just say it's complicated, shall we?"

That was a no. For many reasons. Chief of which she wasn't sure she had friends left, besides Sakura.

"I won't press you for detail since it's your birthday," Bruce promised.

"Much appreciated," she said, grinning. "Does that mean you'll press for details some other time?"

"There's a possibility," Bruce said. "But who can really be sure what the future has in store?"

"As far as attempting to sound mysterious goes," she said dryly, "that's a pretty poor attempt, don't you think?"

"I figured the mask was enough mystery for me tonight," Bruce said.

"Next time," she laughed, "try changin' your voice too, maybe?"
