Truth be told, Bruce was only coming into the bar because he suspected there might be a useable shortcut through the bar and out the back door into the alley. He was going to try to be slightly subtle about that, though.

"Is something wrong?" he couldn't help but ask when he saw Jessica's reactions to the book.

"This book is so stupid," Jessica said, dropping in on the bar. "I ain't never seen a vampire that sparkles. That's just silly."

"Why would a vampire sparkle?" Bruce asked, looking intrigued. It sounded more like a riddle than anything else.

"Apparently the ones in this book do when they're out in the sunlight," Jessica said, rolling her eyes. "They should be burnin' to a crisp instead, that's what really happens."

"That's what I've heard since I've been here," Bruce said. "But that's why they call it fiction, right?"

"But you'd think they'd try to make it a little realistic," Jessica snorted. "They get everything wrong in this book." Well, except maybe some of the creepy stalking.

"You know a lot about vampires?" Bruce asked. It was Fandom. Of course she did. But it didn't hurt to ask.

"Well, yeah," Jessica said, flashing Bruce a smile. "On account of I am one."

"That's less surprising than it would have been nine months ago," Bruce said. "Or if there weren't zombies on the stage."

"We don't have those where I come from," Jessica said, wrinkling her nose at said zombies. "Least I don't think so."

"You don't have musicians?" Bruce joked. "I think you're missing out."

Jessica laughed. "You're funny," she said. "No, we got plenty of those. And vampires. And even some werewolves, I guess. But no zombies."

"So coming to Fandom is barely any change for you," Bruce said. "Well, aside from flying piranhas, I assume."

"Those were so gross," Jessica said, making a face. "They tasted like crap. But yeah, we don't got anything like that back in Louisiana. And Sookie's like ten years younger than she is there, so that's kinda weird, too."

Bruce supposed it made sense that a vampire might try different kinds of blood. It seemed a little weird, but reasonable. "Well, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only person who has to deal with bizarre time things like that," Bruce said. "By the way, I'm Bruce. Sorry, I don't usually go this long before introducing myself to people who tell me so much about themselves and their world."

It wasn't for the drinking! It was self defense, really!

"I'm Jessica," she said. She was beginning to think there was no such thing as a non-cute boy in Fandom. "You a student up there at the school?"

"I am," Bruce said. "I've been here since the beginning of the year."

It took a moment for Bruce to notice the phrasing of the question. "So you aren't a student? You look young enough to be one."

"Kinda hard to go when I'll burn up in the middle of class," Jessica sighed. "I s'pose I'll never finish school now unless I do one of those online things.'

"I know at least one vampire student who manages to get around that," Bruce said. "But she resorts to umbrellas and large hats, so it's pretty awkward."

He resisted the urge to mention night school. It was way too hacky a joke for Bruce to use around a cute girl. It would ruin his whole mystique as a serious guy with a very dry sense of humor.

"Really?" Jessica said. "I wish I could do somethin' like that, but I gotta sleep during the day." She didn't want to go into the grossness of the bleeds in front of a cute boy because ew.

"Sometimes I wish I could get away with sleeping during the day. I'm a night owl too, but that's out of habit, not nature," Bruce said.

Actually, he didn't need to sleep during the day because he barely slept at all. It was just part of being Bruce Wayne.

"So where you from, Bruce?" Jessica asked. "And, oh! Can I get ya something to drink?" She'd almost forgotten that she actually worked there.

"I was happy enough with some conversation, but since you mention it..." Bruce said. "I'll just have a glass of ginger ale for now."

"Anyway, I'm from Gotham City, New York. It only exists in a handful of worlds for some reason. I don't know why." The fact that he didn't drove him a little nuts, yes.

Something that didn't require mixing! Those were the best drinks because she knew she wouldn't screw them up.

"I ain't never been to New York," Jessica said, pouring a glass of ginger ale and pushing it over to Bruce. "I never left Louisiana before I came here. I lived in Shreveport all my life until I got turned into a vampire, and then I was stayin' in Bon Temps with my maker."

"Thank you," Bruce said, lifting the glass to toast Jessica. "Did your maker come to Fandom with you?"

"God, no!" Jessica said, making a face again. "He's a deadbeat daddy vamp, and he went missing anyway. I think maybe werewolves got him." She felt a tiny bit guilty that she wasn't back helping Sookie find him, but it wasn't like Bill cared about her at all.

"That brings up so many questions about your home that I'm going to leave alone for tonight," Bruce said. "I wouldn't want to pry too much this soon after meeting you."

Of course he would want to pry too much. But the people he pried information from usually weren't as happy about it. "I guess the important thing is that you're in a good place now, right?"

"I'm really likin' it here so far," Jessica said, her smile returning. "I got my very own apartment, and a job, and I'm makin' friends."

[Must sleeeep. SP?]

"Sounds like you're living the dream," Bruce said. "So to speak. No joke intended that time, I promise."

[Sure! I'm half asleep as is, so this is good timing.]

"It's a lot more fun than Louisiana," Jessica grinned. "And more cute boys, too."

"If you don't mind me speaking for the other cute boys, we appreciate the attention," Bruce said.

"Well I sure am happy to give it to you," Jessica teased. Fandom was so cool.
