The Boards, Tuesday

It should be noted, perhaps, that this, as most things, was done with the eye of amusing himself first and foremost. He'd adhered to a few personal rules while casting, but other than that, had simply put people where he thought it would be most interesting to see them.

His sense of humor was a... trifle warped, and Genesis was smiling as he put up the list of audition results and studied it for a moment before heading back inside the theatre, but leaving the door open.

Genesis had assured a few of them, after all, that he'd answer any questions. He very nearly expected them, with this list.

The Queen = Karla
Snow White = Rinoa Heartilly
Prince Charming = Christian
Hunter = Warren Worthington III
Magic Mirror = Elphaba Thropp
Trekky = Ariel
Dummy = Jack Sparrow
Smelly = Triela
Bossy = Sara Stanley
Woodland Creatures = Robin (the frog)

In very neat, precise cursive was also a note at the bottom of the sign: Rehearsals will be on Wednesdays until further notice.

[The Snow White links lead you to your utterly insane scripts omigod. Genesis is definitely around for interaction should your characters want to look at them and go WTF.]

"Perhaps..." Karla agreed, still eyeing the theater door. "Hey, if it looks like I'm about to stomp on his toes or pick a fight or something, would you try to reign me in a bit?"

She only wished she were speaking metaphorically.

"I don't handle being intimidated well."

"I think I can manage that," Warren agreed, completely unsuspecting as to what it was that he'd just gotten himself into.

This was going to be a very interesting couple of months, wasn't it?

"I guess that just means we have that much more reason to rehearse together, outside of the set rehearsal times, huh?"

That drew Karla's attention away from the theater and back towards Warren. "Practice does make perfect, after all," Karla agreed, grinning a bit. "And I would hate for your first experience to be anything less than perfect. Do you think we'll have any scenes together?"

Someone still hadn't had a chance to read the source material.

"If it's anything like the story that I already know, we'll have at least two," Warren replied, smiling and nodding a little.

Oh, little did they suspect...

"I am the royal huntsman, and all."

Yep. That Warren. Totally a hunter at heart.

Karla drew herself up regally. "And I a the Queen," she said, preening. "No doubt a just and wise ruler of my Territory. But one who sometimes needs to shuck the royal trappings and just enjoy a rousing hunt every now and again."

She paused, unsure where anyone else fit in. "Warren? What's Snow White about exactly?"

... Oh, this was going to be painful to explain.

"Well... it's about a very beautiful Queen," he said, tactfully, "and her very beautiful step-daughter." Yep. Lots of tact. "And a few jealousy issues."

You know. A couple.

"And there are some dwarves involved."

Karla was waiting...

"Warren, there has to be more than that," she said, finally. "Otherwise, we're all just going to stand on the stage and look at each other. Where's the fun in that? Plus, you haven't even explained who the Prince, the Huntsman, and the Magic Mirror are."

Oh boy...

"Well... The Prince is Snow White's love interest. And the Huntsman is kind of like a bad guy, maybe. And the Magic Mirror belongs to the Queen, and every day, she asks it who the fairest in the land is."

Still missing out on some key plot points there, Warren.

"Like, the most just?" Karla asked, very set on what she believed a Queen to be. "Ooooh, you're the bad guy." She dimpled at him. "How delightfully wicked. Do I have to protect my lovely step-daughter from your lecherous advances?"

From that, it was easy to see, a) Karla was still confused about the main plot, and b) she read some absolutely dreadful novels in her free time.

"Fair as in beautiful," Warren replied, managing to bite back his urge to cringe. "And I am working for you, you know."

Deep breath.

"You're the bad guy. I'm kind of... like the henchman, I guess."

He'd been properly educated for such an occasion! By men in butterfly suits!

"Oooh, I'm the bad guy?" See, Warren, that wasn't so bad! "I bet I'm trying to get you to seduce my lovely and virtuous stepdaughter, aren't I? So that the Prince will fall in love with me instead, right?"

Really, after playing Lady Macbeth, that wasn't awful at all.

"...Why are there dwarves involved?"

"They... uh... they take her in. To keep her safe." Warren was going to just smack his face into things for a while when this conversation was through, probably. "From me. Because you want me to kill her. Because she's too pretty."

... Yep.

Up until this point, Karla had been spinning grand tale in her head. The way she'd been telling it, the Territory expected the Queen to step aside for Snow White as soon as she had her Virgin Night and set up her Court--or, rather, since this world had weird customs, Snow White needed to marry a proper Prince or something before she could ascend the throne. So the evil Queen, was keeping her step-daughter locked away, where she couldn't meet anyone and the Queen could rule forever! It was a magnificent tale of ambition and greed and lust and possibly some deathless vengeance thrown in for good measure!

And then Warren explained the rest of the plot. And Karla's grand story came crashing down around her ears.

"What." That....wasn't a question, no. "I get you to try to kill her because she's pretty? My whole motivation is spite? Petty spite?!"

"I'm afraid so," Warren replied, rubbing at the back of his neck, perhaps a little awkwardly. "It's a children's story."

Because, you know, carving out somebody's heart to put into a box was so very juven-- Oooh.

"... We can maybe go over the script together. Before rehearsal tomorrow."

Karla missed Lady Macbeth suddenly. She was evil and scheming and murderous, but at least she had motivation. This Queen just wanted to be prettier than her teenage daughter.

"This world's children stories are deranged," Karla informed Warren, in case he'd missed the memo or something.

Did that mean Karla was going to back out? Absolutely not!

"Do you think he'll let us have a copy early?"

"If we tell him it's so that we can start memorizing our lines early, I don't see why not," Warren replied, though he wasn't certain that he could really guess just what Genesis would do if they asked. "I, for one, don't really want to freeze up again, even if it is just in rehearsals."

That would be just a tiny bit mortifying, yes.

On the plus side, it distracted Karla from being offended about the Queen's lack of political motivation.

"You froze up?" Karla asked. She patted his arm, sympathetically. "During the audition?"

"Yeah," Warren sighed. "But apparently I did a good enough job to land me a part, so... Yay me?"

In all fairness, when he actually managed the read-through, he hadn't sucked.

"Yay, you," Karla agreed. "I'm glad one of us isn't surprised by this."

"By the script, or by the casting?"

Oh, Warren. There was still plenty of time to be surprised by the script, yet. You haven't even read it, yet.

But, oh, when they did! Shock and horror all around!

"That you did better than you thought," she answered with a sigh. "The fact that you did well should hardly come as such a surprise."

"Should it?" Warren smiled a little at that thought. "I haven't really done it before, I mean."

But he'd spent his whole life being somebody he wasn't. That probably helped.

"Acting is just like playing 'Let's Pretend' but with more rules," Karla said with a shrug. "Surely you played pretend as a little kid."

All right, Karla was just going to have to take a moment and envision wee little Warren running around the house. Most adorable image ever.

"Well, yeah, when I was really small," Warren replied, his smile going a bit twitchy. "I was going to be a firefighter, or a doctor, or an astronaut ~~princess~~ when I grew up."

Delusions of grandeur, he'd kind of come to think of them as. He was a Worthington, and he was a mutant, and on any given day, it was either one or the other that had come to govern who he'd grown up into.

"I was going to be a pirate," Karla said ruefully. "Also, a traveling actress and a stablehand. That's why I'm glad that this new male--as scary as he kind of is--has reopened the theater. This way I do get to be an actress for a little while."

She laughed a bit. "Still no luck on the pirate thing, though."
