There was nothing better than returning to your dorm room to find a really obvious signal that your roommate was screwing your cousin on the other side of the door.

Medusas were forever tainted.

Rather than focusing on how he didn't have anywhere to go, Nico decided to hang out with the zombies. They felt familiar and Nico couldn't help wondering if he could will them to play something he liked.

"Go for loud and angry," he suggested, putting some power behind his words as he headed behind the bar to get his own drink. The bartender seemed much more interested in building a bunker of bar stools in the back room around a laptop and posting up signs declaring the end of...something.

Nico didn't pretend to care. He was getting free drinks instead.

As it turned out, even Bruce could only read about the trees of Canada for so long. He made his out of the dorms for some air, eventually finding his way to Caritas.

"Evening," Bruce said. "Can I get a ginger ale?"

"Uh, sure," Nico said, not quite used to serving others, but he was behind the bar, so he might as well be helpful. "Ginger, ginger, ginger..." He searched through the names on the bottles. "Do you know the color?"

"It's probably on the soda gun," Bruce offered. "I'm not sure how it's labeled on it, though."

"Oh, sweet!" Nico really needed some training, but the soda gun he could manage. Sort of.

He filled three glasses with three different sodas before he thought he had found the ginger ale. "How's that look to you?" No way was the dyslexic even going to try deciphering a tiny code.

"Looks like you're new at this," Bruce said. "But it also looks like you got the drink right. Thanks."

"New at most things, but I'm happy to help," Nico admitted, tasting one of the other sodas he'd poured. "Ew, diet."

"Then I take it you're also one of the newer students? It would explain why we haven't met before. I'm Bruce," Bruce said.

"Nico," he replied. "Yeah, just got here...three months ago? It feels like forever."

"I know what you mean. I've been here since January. It almost feels like a lifetime," Bruce said.

Given he only remembered...about the last seventy or so months of his life, Nico thought three was kind of a large chunk. "Oh wow, you must know all the tricks to survival. Don't get me wrong, I know weird, but everyone getting...strange this week? Beyond weird."

"This week the main trick for survival is use protection. Or don't come out of your room," Bruce said. Definitely don't pick up vampires, because that is just crazy, Bruce.

"Yeah, sticking to the room was critical," Nico agreed looking a little crabby. "My roommate's called dibs for the evening. I don't even wanna go back."

"You don't happen to have any friends with spare beds in their room, do you?" Bruce asked.

"Nope! But I know my way around the preserve and the stables so I should manage." Or he could sleep in front of his door so Percy could trip over him in the morning.

"Really. I'm assuming you've done some camping," Bruce said. He would have expected the first resort of a sexiled student to be a common room or the hotel (or, this week, with someone else), not the woods or with the horses.

This was not the usual sexiled student. "Kinda," Nico shrugged. "I lived on my own for a while is more like it."

"It wasn't the traditional kind of living on your own, was it?" Bruce asked. Otherwise Nico's survival skills would probably involve cooking ramen, not making due in the woods.

"Traditional like the hipster douches on television? No. I was a lot more alone. The kind that doesn't come with mac and cheese or blue birthday cakes." Some others were a lot luckier.

"I hope Fandom has at least helped you stabilize things a little," Bruce said. He really did. He appreciated the fact that Fandom had benefits for people other than himself to offset the drawbacks that often presented themselves.

"It's cool, that was a while ago. Fandom's fun when everyone's not going insane with lust." Okay, so it had been a little fun with Jason, but one day does not fix the other six.

Bruce didn't think he had gone insane with lust. Just largely stupid. "It's bound to end eventually. Hopefully. And if it doesn't, somebody will find a way to make it end."

Yes, Bruce would eventually make it his mission to get his mind back on his training.
