When he arrived to behind the bar and drink Chuck's booze, John was surprised to find Tino wearing thick, padded gloves, short shorts, and a wife beater tank.

Nope, not worth correcting. John would just spend his evening averting his eyes.

Those shorts were really tight.

Bored with the quiet of the last week, Jaina decided to head to the bar rather than spending another night in her apartment. Of course, as soon as she sat down and got any sort of look at Tino, any potential hello was trumped by "There should be a warning on the door about this."

Hopefully her comment was directed at John, but since he didn't care if he was interrupting, it didn't really matter. "Sorry, no pen on me. I almost peed a message in the snow, but I thought that would be too hard to read. Also it's cold out."

"Also, kind of gross," she added honestly. "Hi. If I end up looking in your direction a lot, I'm not being creepy, I'm trying to stay unblind."

"You regenerated once," John pointed out. "Not willing to see if it happens again?" So sad.

"I regenerated?" Jaina asked with raised eyebrows. "That makes me sound like I regrew parts."

"Hey, wasn't that how you got your hair back?" John pointed out, sliding a coke across the bar at her.

"Thanks," she said, taking the Coke. And she had to admit, "I'd forgotten about the hair growing back. I thought you were talking about past blindness. The hair I think less of as 'regeneration' and more 'wallaby.'"

"I was talking about both," John answered, kind of hazy on the details of when which happened. "I mostly just remember you being miraculously fixed."

"The eyes were less miracle and more bacta and healing trances and that stupid mask thing I had to wear," she said, thinking back. She might still have that thing in a box somewhere. "The hair... Yeah, that was a miracle fix. Though it's a good thing the wallaby things don't wander around growing hair that often." That was said with a glance up to his own hair.

"I see that look," John said, frowning. "It's not like my hair would take over the island."

"Oh, I know," she assured him. "I'm just trying to figure out what you'd look like if you ran into one of those things. And whether your hair would rebel." Probably not, as her own hair had grown nearly to her feet.

"Might lie flat for the first time in my life," John answered. "Not that I want to see it happen."

"Well, the military cut had to be kind of flat, right?" she assumed. "Maybe the first day..." How did she keep ending up in conversations about his hair? This was twice in a week.

"There was nothing flat about it." His hair had been bristly where it wasn't completely shaved off.

"I don't think I ever saw it the first day," she admitted. "There might have been a phone picture or something. Maybe later I'll see if I'm right or if I'm just making things up."

"It was a really long time ago...for both of us now." Weird as that was. "Think I should shave it off again? Let you have the full effect?"

The answer was immediate. "No. I mean, not that I have any place to stop you or anything, but it looks good like this. And if you do do it, at least wait till it's not winter." She did speak from experience on that one.

"You don't think I'd look good in a knit cap? Like a snow bunny or something?" John teased, leaning against the bar with a smile.

"For as good as you might look in one, I think if it leads to words like 'like a snow bunny,' you should keep your hair," Jaina grinned.

"Fine, be a buzz kill." Get it?

"Very nice," she laughed, and took a sip of her drink. "So how was your Christmas?"

A little weird to ask, since all of her previous Christmases had been spent with him, but past was past.

"You know, quiet." John didn't know if Jaina actually wanted to know or was just being polite so he kept it brief. "Yours?"

"Quiet," Jaina said. She was honestly curious about his, but she was used to not hearing much. She tended to think if he didn't share, it was something she didn't want to hear. "Came into work because everyone was out of town, got accidentally tipsy with Mr. Tightshorts over here. Which is just what I wanted when I had to walk home in all the snow."

"So there was a lot of stumbling and damp knees?" John guessed. "Now I'm sorry I was stuck hanging out with Dave and his kids."

"You're the only person here I'd admit the damn knees thing to," she confirmed. "So you did the family thing, huh? How is Dave?"

"He's Dave. Work, work, work. I didn't see dad, but I hear he's good, too." Not that John had asked. "Back to your damp knees, will you be hanging out at the laundry mat trying to get out the stains this week?"

"The laundry room in my building, anyway. With most people gone for the holidays, it might even count as entertainment," Jaina said. "Yes, I know my life is thrilling, no need to be jealous."

"I'm seriously jealous," John teased. "You make my nights look positively dull in comparison."

"Well, should your nights get so dull you need some entertainment, you can always keep me company in the laundry room. There's a sentence I never once thought I'd say." And one she had to shake her head at.

"Probably because you never considered how awesome the spin cycle could be." He had a dirty mind, sue him.

The thing is, Jaina knew he was probably turning that dirty, and she still had to say, "I'm not even sure what that means..."

John just chuckled, shaking his head. "You'd hit me if I told you."

"I kind of feared it was that bad," she said, but she was smiling when she rolled her eyes.

"Isn't it always with me?" He knew himself pretty well.

"I'm pretty sure there have been a few conversations without innuendo," she said, looking thoughtful. "I think those throw me off sometimes for times like this."

"Strange, sober occasions, no doubt," John told her. "I prefer to think I'm incapable of serious conversation."

"You continue to think that," Jaina said with a nod, and took another sip of her drink. "But I know better."

"And I'd have you keep that to yourself," John teased. "Since you're probably the only person on the island who knows better."

"Who would I tell?" It wasn't like she had a very wide social circle even if this wasn't teasing. "The secret of your occasional and temporary seriousness is safe with me."

For sitting.

For football.

It's Sunday?

(And Boxing Day? Get it?)
