Caritas | Wednesday

When Alex got into work that night, he ordered Tino to peel off and replace the labels on about twenty different bottles of booze. When Tino wanted to know why, Alex explained to him just exactly how a prank work. Tino still hedged before Alex smacked him in the back of his head and told him to get to work.

It was comical watching Tino try to peel and replace labels without ripping them. The duct tape to keep them on their new bottles was a nice touch.

Jane had been debating this for a while, but, ultimately, she decided that she wouldn't be much of an adventurer if she didn't go into the local tavern, and, besides, things were much more liberal over here in America, and that settle it. Her curiosity couldn't be satiated until she opened the door, poked her head in, and, when she was not met with an immediate cry of objection at her being in there, she gleefully bounced on in.

Her. In a tavern, a bar. She'd been in a few of her father's adventuring friends clubhouses, of course, but this was incredibly different and deliciously improper. She could barely contain her excitement.

"I must say," she gushed to no one in particular, perhaps the barkeep, as she slid onto a stool delicately despite her eyes trained on the stage, "that is precisely what I would imagine reanimated corpses to look...and smell!"

She didn't understand why they were there, but, scientifically, really, it was incredibly fascinating.

"Oh, well," Jane said, slowly looking away from the stage to give a smile to the barkeep. She pulled herself up, to make herself look like she knew what she was doing, that she went into taverns all the time.

But, er, not quite for reasons certain ladies might go into taverns.

"The reanimation of corpses has been quite an exciting topic in the medical field, don't you think? My own dabblings in science tend to be more toward the evolutionary, but it's hard to ignore such a fascinating idea, that there could be a sort of second life after death. After decomposition, even! And the representations of it in literature have only added to its intrigue, terrifying as they may be. Reanimating dead flesh! Whoever gets a grip on that one will go down in history, that's for sure."

Jane blinked at the barkeep, not wanting to let her overly excited mind latch too quickly on just a spark of a thought too quickly.

"But they're only models, aren't they? Very...believable ones, but they couldn't possibly be real, could they?"

...goddamn you. It's stuck in my head, only there it's sung by people from Arrested Development.

"Oh, I am sure!" said Jane, laughing, but it was a terribly excited sort of chuckle. "And I bet it would have bells on it, too."

That question allowed Jane to be momentarily distracted with the fact that she didn't understand half of what had just come out of the young man's mouth.

"Oh, yes, please!" she said eagerly. "What would you recommend?"

But a little alcohol wasn't enough to pull her from science for too long. Especially since she as quite capable of holding two conversations at one time and thinking nothing of it. "And do you honestly mean to say that they're real? If they're real, then what's reanimated them? Do you know? Are you the one who did it? Is it an electricity thing? A biological one? Ooh! Perhaps it's a chemical reaction of sorts! I suppose it could be something mystical as well, but, you know, I never took too much standing in the mystical explanations; there's almost always a better explanation, vapours or hallucinations or even just the wind, if you look into it closely enough."

"Oh, perhaps just a bit of chilled champagne, then, if you please," Jane decided cordially, figuring that was a drink that was not only unobjectionable, but also one that she knew, which was the important part. "And how long have you been here? Who is the owner? Would he know?"

"Oh, yes, the library," said Jane with a little bit of a chuckle. "Now, there's a problem there. I'm afraid that if I should go in, I might never make it out again!"

"Well, then, I will simply have to hide myself away in a stack of books and wait unil they're finished, and then have the place to myself all night!" said Jane, who sounded like she'd considered this sort of thing before.

"No, I've never even heard the word before," Jane admitted with a chuckle. "So I'm just going to assume it means quite intelligent, determined, and dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. And quite possibly beautiful in there, too, and I won't hear a word of what you might suggest otherwise."

After a truly exhausting day of looking through fashion magazines, Shelley needed a drink.

"I need a drink," she stated as she plopped down on a bar stool.
