Caritas | Wednesday

When Alex got into work that night, he ordered Tino to peel off and replace the labels on about twenty different bottles of booze. When Tino wanted to know why, Alex explained to him just exactly how a prank work. Tino still hedged before Alex smacked him in the back of his head and told him to get to work.

It was comical watching Tino try to peel and replace labels without ripping them. The duct tape to keep them on their new bottles was a nice touch.

Jane had been debating this for a while, but, ultimately, she decided that she wouldn't be much of an adventurer if she didn't go into the local tavern, and, besides, things were much more liberal over here in America, and that settle it. Her curiosity couldn't be satiated until she opened the door, poked her head in, and, when she was not met with an immediate cry of objection at her being in there, she gleefully bounced on in.

Her. In a tavern, a bar. She'd been in a few of her father's adventuring friends clubhouses, of course, but this was incredibly different and deliciously improper. She could barely contain her excitement.

"I must say," she gushed to no one in particular, perhaps the barkeep, as she slid onto a stool delicately despite her eyes trained on the stage, "that is precisely what I would imagine reanimated corpses to look...and smell!"

She didn't understand why they were there, but, scientifically, really, it was incredibly fascinating.

"Oh, well," Jane said, slowly looking away from the stage to give a smile to the barkeep. She pulled herself up, to make herself look like she knew what she was doing, that she went into taverns all the time.

But, er, not quite for reasons certain ladies might go into taverns.

"The reanimation of corpses has been quite an exciting topic in the medical field, don't you think? My own dabblings in science tend to be more toward the evolutionary, but it's hard to ignore such a fascinating idea, that there could be a sort of second life after death. After decomposition, even! And the representations of it in literature have only added to its intrigue, terrifying as they may be. Reanimating dead flesh! Whoever gets a grip on that one will go down in history, that's for sure."

"Hi! I'm Shelley. Been here long?" Shelley asked, smiling at the young lady.

Oh, fantastic! Another woman in the tavern, although, by the looks of her, it was just the sort of woman that Jane would have mostly been advised to not associate with.

But she wasn't going to make any judgments. She was her own woman now and she was in America, besides, where they were quite more forgiving of this sort of thing, so she smiled back at the woman. "Oh, hello! I most certainly am. Jane. Jane Porter, a pleasure to meet you, Shelley. Do you come here often?"

Before replying, Shelley leaned in close to get a really good look a Jane and said, in a voice akin to what you might image coming from a frog that smokes, "Jane Porter."

She nodded, apparently satisfied. "I don't come here nearly as often as I think I should," she said.

After a truly exhausting day of looking through fashion magazines, Shelley needed a drink.

"I need a drink," she stated as she plopped down on a bar stool.

"Well, you are the expert," Shelley replied, not being subtle about checking out the bartender. "Make it good."

"Long day?" Henry said sympathetically, as he leaned toward her. "Or is needing a drink just the island default?"

"Work day," Shelley replied, figuring that was explanation enough. "Every Wednesday." Yeah, her life was so hard.

Bruce hadn't been to the bar for a while, so it was time to fix that. Not because he needed a drink or anything. Just because he liked to keep track of what the nightlife in the bar was like. And possibly how good some people might be at singing, just in case there was another singing day and he wanted to plan out a partner for a duet.

Bruce truly believed in being prepared for EVERYTHING.

"Alex. How are you tonight?" Bruce asked as he took a seat at the bar.

"I haven't talked to him much," Bruce said. "Actually, I'm not sure he's ever said a word to me."

That was a little unsettling. "But other than that, he doesn't seem too bad."

It had been ... a truly disgusting amount of time since Henry actually made it to the bar. He was turning into an old man.

He winced when he noticed the bartender looked like a student, but at least it wasn't anyone who worked for him. He could deal.

"Can you do an Irish coffee, heavy on the Irish?" he asked. "Best thing for weather like this."

"Chicago," Henry said, with a modified death glare. "I've been in Maryland a year. It made me soft."

...goddamn you. It's stuck in my head, only there it's sung by people from Arrested Development.
