Caritas: Friday Night

Jessica totally hadn't been late to work today. Really. And if she had, it was Sookie's fault, since she kept calling her but getting her voice mail, and it had her just a little bit worried now.

Dani needed an opportunity to talk to a person instead of talking to her horses. Besides, she had a bit of a mystery on her hands.

"I'd like a beer. What do you have on tap?" she asked the girl behind the bar as she took a seat on a bar stool.

"Umm, just about everything, I think," Jessica said. "What kind do you like?"

"Surprise me. As long as it's got alcohol, I don't really care," said Dani. To be honest, she wasn't a beer drinker, but she was in search of information. "You wouldn't happen to know if you get any beer delivered by horse-drawn carriage, would you?"

Jessica picked one of the taps at random and started to fill a glass. "I ain't here during the day," she said. "Just at night. So I ain't never seen any of the deliveries."

"I can imagine. This place seems like it would be more lively after the sun goes down," said Dani, glancing at the zombie band. "I own the stable in town, and a few days ago, I found a draft horse that someone apparently left behind. No one's come forward to claim him yet."

Most people find stray dogs. Dani had found herself a stray Clydesdale.

"Oh, like the ones in those commercials!" Jessica said as she slid the glass to Dani. "Did you find a dog with it? A dalmatian?"

"I haven't seen any sign of a dog yet, though now I think I'd better search the barn again, just in case," said Dani, pausing to sip the bear before she continued. "I have been finding all sorts of odd things lately."

"Good odd things, or nasty odd things?" Jessica asked curiously.

"Strange, but not nasty, I think," said Dani, setting down her beer ~~yes beer, not bear~~. "Have you seen those late-night commercials for that twin draft guard that you put on a door? I had a case of them appear out of nowhere."

"How about Snuggies?" Jessica asked. "Did you get any of those? Or the new electric ones? Those sound like they'd be real good on a cold night. Except you can't really go anywhere on account of the cord."

"I'm not sure how much I'd trust them to make electric Snuggies," laughed Dani. "I did find a regular one, but I found it at home, not in the barn. It was at the foot of my bed one morning. I thought it was kind of goofy at first, but it is warm."

"What about one of those Shake Weights?" Jessica wanted to know. She was an expert on late night TV, no reason. "They're kinda, well, dirty though."

"Wow, you really know your late night commercials," said Dani, surprised. "I get enough of a workout moving hay bales and riding horses, so I guess there's no reason for Shake Weights to appear in my barn."

"I kinda sleep all day," Jessica admitted. "And when I'm not workin' or doin' somethin', I stay up all night and have the TV on. They show a lot of those commercials over and over again."

And over, and over, and over again.

"Sounds like you need to get a good DVR to catch some of the earlier programming," said Dani. "I don't get to watch that much late night television anymore. I used to when I lived with my family, but these days I'm too worn out to stay up. Taking care of horses is exhausting when you don't have help."

"I get up as soon as it's dark, so I see some of the prime time shows," Jessica said. "But I guess when it's summer time again I'll be sleepin' 'til it's a lot later. So not fair I got more time to be awake when it's so cold out."

That seemed really odd to Dani, and she gave Jessica a confused look. "Do you have something against daylight?" she asked.

"Yeah, I do," Jessica said with a grin. She liked watching the expressions on people's faces when she told them this part. "I'm a vampire."

"No way! Seriously? Do you drink blood and everything?" asked Dani.

"Blood's a whole lot better than this crap," Jessica said, pulling out a bottle of Tru Blood from behind the bar. "It's synthetic blood, but it tastes awful."

"I'll have to take you word for it on that," said Dani. "Do you sleep in a coffin, too? And how to do get television reception in the graveyard?"

Yeah, leave it to Dani to take all those vampire legends as actual facts.

"I don't have a coffin," Jessica said, making a face. "I used to have to sleep underneath my maker's house, but that was dirty and kind of gross. I have my own place now and there's no windows so I can sleep in a bed. The TV's in my livin' room."

"Oh, that sounds much better," said Dani. "I never thought a coffin would be that comfortable, and sleeping under a house doesn't sound much better."

"It was awful," Jessica whined. "Bugs would crawl over me and my hair and clothes would get all dirty. A bed is so much better."
