Jane was feeling quite a bit like she'd had just about a cup too many of the punch at the dance last night, leaving her in a little bit of a cross mood at the store, but not so much so that she didn't mind things if they were nice and quiet and peaceful, as they usually were on a Saturday.

But Mr. Nahasapeemapetilon was just very busily going about something in the toy section, leaving Jane exasperated that he just would not seem to take it easy. "Mr. Nahasapeemapetilon," she sighed imploringly, "what are you doing?"

It appeared as though he was completely rearranging the toy section, and moving quite a bit of merchandice up higher on the shelves; Jane looked at his project a little worriedly, but he assured her that she would be most grateful for it later. He'd been here long enough that he could just feel when these sorts of things were going to happen.

This reassurance did not reassure Jane in the slightest.

"Excuse me." A small person stood politely in front of the counter, reaching up to knock on it so she wouldn't be overlooked because she was short. (Short for now! She would be tall someday! Not short like Mommy!) "Hello. Can you tell me where I am?"

"Oh, yes, of course, my dear!" Jane said, giving the wee little one a smile. "You're in Turtle & Canary; it's a store for all sorts of things. Did you need help finding something? Are you here with your mother or your father somewhere?"

"They're lost," Melinda informed the nice lady with the accent. "They don't know where I am. Because I don't know where I am. Is this still Maryland?"

"Yes, dear, of course," Jane nodded reassuringly. "Well, right off the coast of it, actually. Fandom Island. Are your parents here, too, do you suppose? What are their names, dear?"

"Dana Scully and Bruce Wayne," Melinda informed her, hopping up to lean on the counter, then dangle there, a good foot over the floor. "An' that's where they went to school! I live in Baltimore now. That's straaaaange."

"Ah, here, up ya get!" Jane said, reaching over to help pull the girl up and set her on the countertop. "So you don't have to just hang there like a silly monkey. Now, then, how about I try and look your parents up in the phone book and I'll see if I can reach them there? Doesn't that sound like a good idea?"

Melinda giggled and scrambled as Jane helped her up, and sat up on the countertop like a big girl. Taaaaller up here! "Okay! I like monkeys. We saw some in the zoo. OOo ooo oooo!" she imitated.

"Oh, my!" Jane chuckled approvingly as she tried to figure out where that silly directory might have been hiding. "That's quite a good little monkey impression! You know, I study monkeys, so I should know!"

"You study them? Are you a scientist?" Melinda asked, peering after her. "Oo ooo! They come from Africa! And South America. Pretty sure. Have you been there?"

"As a matter of fact," Jane was proud to report, "I have. Daddy and I are primatologist, special scientists that study monkeys and gorillas and apes and chimpanzees and all sorts of primates. We've been to Africa many, many times to explore their natural habitats."

"You are so lucky," Melinda said, full of envy. "My mommy is a pathologist. She looks at dead bodies to see how they got sick and died. Monkeys are funner."

"More fun, dear," Jane corrected kindly as she finally located that directory. "And I must agree; monkeys are great fun."

"Do you have monkeys in your house? Is it a monkey house? Do you know gorillas?" Melinda asked, suddenly overcome with the idea. "Big ones?"

Ugh, past few days have spoiled me with no work, so if I'm slow or flighty, I apologize!
