Jaina had been in sort of a strange mood yesterday, and knowing what was going on where Tiny Mom was was turning it from a strange mood into a serious one. She was doing her best to shake it off, though, and she had gotten Very Good at repression over the years.

Helping her mood was the fact that Tino was experimenting today, putting various things together to come up with new drinks. He wasn't doing too well, and his facial expressions at finding this out were nothing short of classic.

He also couldn't seem to understand why Jaina kept turning down trying them...

It hadn't been the most clearly spelled out bit of information ever, but what Tahiri had heard on the radio this morning about certain people's office hours yesterday set off just enough of a bad-feeling-about-this vibe for her to head down to the bar and find Jaina.

"So," she said without preamble as she came in, "should I have a bad feeling about why someone we know isn't around this weekend?"

It was weird to say that about something that had happened years ago.

"Apparently so," Jaina sighed. "So I'll be seeking her out for hugs when she gets back. Can I get you anything?"

Might as well try to do her job, right?

"Just a Coke." Tahiri climbed up onto a bar stool, making a face. "I guess I should go see her too -- but that's going to be so weird for you, isn't it?"

"It was weirder to hear about it yesterday," she said, getting the Coke and placing it on the bar. "I've seen Mom's reaction to what happened in my time, I've even been to where Alderaan used to be. Knowing it was still there till... sometime before she gets back is a little weird. But that comes with the funny timelines."

Tahiri slid the glass closer but didn't actually take a sip, opting to just turn the glass around in erratic circles for a few moments instead.

"Every time we think the timelines can't be more confusing . . ." She really didn't need to finish that sentence, did she? "On the other hand, I guess it's nice to know at least this time we can be there for her."

"Yeah. Since if she comes back here, she won't have Dad and Uncle Luke around all the time..." Though, really, those were two good meetings, at least. "You haven't told her anything about Grandfather, have you?"

Tahiri shook her head, a little too emphatically. "Not a word. Up until now that seemed like the best idea but all of a sudden I'm not so sure."

"And it's probably too late now. It's hard, figuring out what to say and what not to, and what's yours to say," she said, frowning. "I'm not sure if her knowing would be better or worse... I keep thinking about things like that."

Tahiri finally took a sip of her drink and nodded. "I keep imagining things going about five different ways, and that doesn't help much, and I can't help thinking she's going to be mad that we didn't say anything."

"That has crossed my mind," Jaina said immediately. "Though how exactly do you break that news to someone before it happens?"

Tahiri couldn't help thinking about Ben flinching away from her for months before she finally got any answers out of him, which explained her wry half-smile.

"That -- I'm not convinced there's any easy way to do that."

"There's a lot of rough stuff ahead, too, some of which I know she knows about, but I'd have to say that's maybe a little easier to talk about beforehand than a planet." She paused. "I shouldn't think too hard on this. It's too late to do any warning now anyway."

"She met Anakin, that one weekend," Tahiri said by way of confirmation. "Besides, she's Leia. If anybody can handle it . . . well, we know she can."

"Yeah. It's why I'm not worrying as much about her as most people would. Even when I thought she finally snapped, she turned out to be right," she said. Though even after they got Jacen back from the Vong, Jaina had never been quite able to express that 'you were right' to her mother. "Things get bad, and she'll be okay, and she'll charge on to the next thing even stronger."

"Uh huh," Tahiri said affectionately. "She puts the rest of us to shame sometimes that way. Always will."

"Though I do have to say I'd really rather the rest of us never have to get that good at it," she said wryly.

Tahiri made a vague noise of agreement. "One expert of that sort is enough for any family." Which she apparently considered herself part of now. Hmm.

It seemed Jaina still considered Tahiri part of it, too. "Of course, in order to stop that sort of thing from happening, we'd have to actually learn to stay out of the action and I don't see that happening," she said. "It's even in my job title."

"Do you have business cards?" Tahiri teased, a slight amused eyeroll expressing exactly what she thought of the possibility of them staying out of the action. Because really. "At least we're all used to it by now."

Jaina snorted. "I can see me with business cards. I can pass them out preferably after I've doled out some damage, so they can tell their friends."

"Tell their friends?" Tahiri snickered. "'I got my butt kicked by the Sword of the Jedi, ask me how?'"

"That would be a great slogan," she pointed out with a lopsided grin.

"It would. Maybe you should get cards with that on there," Tahiri replied, drawing patterns in the condensation on her glass. "Just so you can say you have them."

"I would, but I'm both a Jedi and a teacher, which means my paycheck is kind of not worth that splurge," she said. "Unless people start tipping me really well."

"And as a Jedi, I can't help you much in that department," Tahiri said, looking apologetic. "Maybe someone else will, though."

"Don't worry about it," she assured her. "If I really want business cards, I can always see what I can win at the tables in Atlantic City or Vegas."

Because while she was kidding, she'd totally won good amounts at the tables there before.

"Now you sound more like your dad," Tahiri said with a chuckle. "That doesn't surprise me either."

"He did learn poker because I taught him," Jaina said proudly. "I figured I might as well return the favor for him teaching me all the things he wasn't supposed to when Mom wasn't looking."

"I bet she probably knew he would anyway," Tahiri laughed. "Have you really won a lot at the casinos here?"

They didn't have cards that changed. That had to be easier than sabacc.

"I did really well when I went there with John once, to the point where we had to leave because people were starting to watch me," she said. "Mostly I play for a while and try to win just enough to make me happy and then I can leave."

"So I don't have to worry about seeing you on one of those poker tournaments on TV, then," Tahiri decided. "I still don't understand why those are on the sports channels, by the way."

"Because sitting in a chair all day and staring at cards is athletic now," Jaina deadpanned. "Where have you been?"

"Too busy falling down turbolift shafts and sitting in on strategic meetings to pay attention, I guess," Tahiri retorted easily. "I must miss out on all the important things that way."
