Mystery Sign Theatre 3000, Wednesday

Last night, Kate had finally managed to get a call through to her mother after nearly a week of trying (and before that, over a week of not bothering to even try because she'd needed a bit of distance). She'd been expecting to have to cover for why she'd been out of contact for so long, but her mother had actually seemed pretty mellow, and hadn't said a single thing about any missed calls.

The explanation had come soon enough, though. When Kate had carefully asked about how Charmaine had been doing after the wedding/family secret unveiling extravaganza, her mom had said the strangest thing. "Well, I think she's still coming to terms with it, I mean it's only been three days."

...According to Kate's perception of the world, it had been over two weeks. Oh yeah. Welcome to having timeline issues, Kate. She was pretty adamant to not think about that at all today. Her senior prom was coming up, so it really was time to think about accessories, rather than give herself a headache trying to figure out interdimensional time differences or, God forbid, think about the stuff she'd told Mitchell about a few days ago.

The hardest question she wanted to be dealing with today was who was going to ask who to the prom. (She figured it was Bod's turn this year.) The day's movie was a comedy, too, and she approved of that.

"Go for quirky, you can't pull off 'classy'," Mitchell informed the ceiling, and took a sip of his coffee.

It was slightly difficult with his head bent back over the chair like that, but he was working it like a champ.

As much as she'd just been making small talk, that got a glare. "Gee, thanks."

"You're a teenager. Classy doesn't set in until your acne clears off," Mitchell told her, drawling. Mostly out of sheer ennui.

"I ~~have impossibly perfect TV teenager skin~~ don't have acne!" Kate snapped. Really, now, did he have to go and try make her insecure about her appearance right before a big dance? ... Not that her confidence was quite that easily shaken. "What's with all the insults?"

He was torn somewhere between happiness (Lucy), fear (death up ahead?) and general emotional turmoil (he looked a lot healthier than usual this morning). Well. That would be the honest answer.

"It just feels like a day for it," Mitchell said instead, though he at least lifted his head up enough to look at her.

He was greeted by one of those unimpressed looks Kate was so good at. "Well, it doesn't feel like a day to be on the receiving end of it, so cut it the fuck out."

Mitchell managed to produce a fairly convincing eyeroll. "What's got you up in arms, then."

The one Kate gave while raising her coffee mug to her lips was even more convincing. She would've claimed so, anyway. "Well, my home dimension --" And she hated to think of it as such when it had until now seemed to be so in tune with Fandom. "-- seems to have randomly tilted funnily or something."

"...Define 'tilted funnily'."

"I finally got a call to go through to Kansas, and Mom says it's been like three days since the wedding," Kate shrugged. "It's been almost three weeks."

"Strange," Mitchell said, sipping his coffee again, then setting it down. "Maybe it's only temporary? Our time shifted a bit a while ago but it seems to have gone back to normal."

Kate gave another shrug. "I don't know, we'll see. I hope it rights itself because I'm gonna get a headache if I'll have to keep figuring out what day it is over there."

Maths were not a love of her life, no.

"Suppose they'd go a bit mad if you called them every day," Mitchell mused, though his heart wasn't in it.

"Everyone there is already mad," Kate replied mildly over the her mug. "They'd just get suspicious. Considering I've managed to keep the true nature of this place mostly hidden from them for almost two years, I'd rather not fuck it up now."

"'Why are you calling for the fifth time in one hour, Kate?'" he said, adopting an American accent. "'Sorry, thought it was Tuesday... in June.' That would be awkward."

"Exactly," Kate sighed, shaking her head. "Basically, I don't think anyone's getting invited to my graduation. Especially not my parents."

"So call people at random in your universe," he suggested. "Ask them what day it is."

After a beat: "And you should at least send them pictures."

Kate raised an eyebrow. "Didn't people get, like, turned into animals and shit last year?"

"Carefully edited pictures?"

"I think your basic cap-and-gown pic is gonna have to be enough... That is, if they even do the cap and gown thing here. Do they?"

She'd spent last year's ceremony at two different restaurants in town, trying to have a nice date with Warren, so she honestly had no idea.

"I... don't really remember," Mitchell admitted. "Most of that stuff gets to be a blur."

"Impressive." Not that she didn't think he tended to have a lot more on his mind than high school graduation ceremonies. "and on the note of your general obliviousness, any idea what happened here over the weekend?"

Really, he found himself saying this so many times over the past few years, Kate could probably say it with him: "Something happened over the weekend?"

Kate... was actually pretty much mouthing it along from the word 'over' onwards, yes. And then she rolled her eyes.

"Something about pipes and kidnapped kids and stuff like that."

"I was kind of busy at the time," Mitchell admitted. "Haven't been here in ages."
