Pixie Dust, Friday

Oh, formal events. How the cash register adored you. Jenny opened up Pixie Dust on Friday after taking a few minutes to rearrange things to make sure the formalwear was most obvious, then put a sign in the window:

Left it to the last minute?
Good.
Formalwear 10% extra

Ruthless? But of course. Pixie Dust? Open.

Scully stared at the sign on her way in, then rolled her eyes, looking around for something that would look good on a short, curvy redhead which would not make her look like any version of what she'd worn in the 80's.

"Thank you for shopping at Pixie Dust, how may I blah blah et cetera blah," Jenny said without moving from her spot behind the counter.

Scully shot her a short, bemused look, then looked around with a grimace. "Something that won't make me look like a dwarf, standing next to a tall guy. That would be good."

"Short skirt?" Jenny suggested. "Make your legs look longer." She lit a fresh cigarette with her typical--which was to say, nonexistent--concern for her customer's well-being.

Scully wrinkled her nose reflexively, starting to look through the racks, sighing. "Maybe? And not too girly." God, not girly. She held up a dress (http://i38.tinypic.com/2kzkk.jpg), and frowned, trying to figure out how low it would dip in the back on her.

Scully definitely didn't have to worry about Jenny suggesting anything girly. She wasn't Ariel. "That's a rather daring choice," she did offer. "Especially the back." By which she meant that if Scully wanted to show half her bum it wasn't Jenny's problem.

"Yeah?" Scully wasn't one to back down from a challenge, so she nodded sharply, and went into the dressing room.

Then came out five minutes later, cheeks red. "Right. No. Something that actually fits, that would be good."

"I've certainly always thought so," Jenny agreed. "Are you leaning toward black?"

Black wasn't girly. And it wouldn't do weird cutesy or sickening things to her coloring. "Black," Scully said, agreeing, then couldn't help but add, "And the highest heels you've got."

"I have some charming four and a half inch heels if your ankles are up to it," Jenny suggested. "But first you need a dress."

"That should at least put me in the same frame for any photos," Scully admitted, then grimaced. "Right. Dress first." She spotted one and considered it, holding it up. "Cute? "You gingers," Jenny said scornfully. "The sash will clash with your hair. Tall date?"

"Tall. Broad-shouldered. Also red-haired," Scully admitted, then grimaced and put the dress back. "Oh, I think I know who you mean," Jenny said. "Well done." She frowned at the white dress. "Only if you don't mind looking like you might be hiding a pregnancy."

"Thanks?" Scully's sense of humor was coming back, and she put the white dress on the rack again, then spun and randomly pointed. "Hmmmmm. Maybe?"

"Maybe," Jenny agreed, her tone suggesting that maybe she was just saying this because she was Jenny and whatever.

Scully gave her a Look, then grimaced, and grabbed another dress. Black. With a weirdly asymmetrical neckline. She came back out of the dressing room. "This?"

Jenny considered her and asked, "It's not pinching weirdly or anything, is it?" Because she wasn't sure how that neckline worked and saluted Scully for figuring it out on her own.

Scully twisted one way, then the other, and waved her arms. "It ... seems to be okay? This is the way it goes, right?"

"I think so," Jenny said, actually coming out from behind the counter to examine it. "Nothing's lying oddly, anyway. It looks good," she decided.

Scully heaved a sigh of relief. Which may have been obvious, but hey. "I should try on those shoes, see if they work with this." She looked around for them, and carefully walked around, only slightly wobbly. "I don't think I could run in them, but hopefully I won't have to..."

"If you have to run at the prom you're probably doing something wrong," Jenny said dryly.

"More than likely." Scully smirked, and said, "These, and the dress, thanks. Even with the 10% extra. Roy can buy me an extra dessert."

Jenny approved of this plan. "That'll be handwavey dollars. We also take pounds, euros, gold coins, and all major credit cards, but don't try to convince me leaves are currency where you're from or I'll electrocute you before I toss you out."
