Nathan was still in 'filling up hours' mode when he wandered into work today. Once he'd gotten back behind the bar, he asked Tino what he did when he wasn't at the bar. When Tino started saying something about cross stitching and something called an antiques roadshow, Nathan had immediately made him shut up by throwing a wet rag at his face.

"You're going to make me boring!" Nathan exclaimed, glaring. "And if I end up boring, the world is surely doomed to end. Do you want the world to end, Tino? Do you? Have you made reparations and paid penance yet?"

Tino didn't seem to believe the rant but he scooted away all the same, trying to wipe the dampness off his face as he did. Nathan pulled out his phone and clicked around to find his games before giving Tino the international symbol for 'I'm watching you.'

If the world ended, everyone had a bartender in Maryland to blame.

There is a band!

There are two bartenders, take your pick!

Caroline did not think Nathan could ever be considered boring, but luckily she wasn't in on that conversation with Tino.

She was, however, coming into the bar to say hi. And get a drink, or whatever it was people did in these places to make things not awkward. "The creeper looks creepier today if that's even possible," she remarked, taking a seat as far from Tino as she could manage.

At the sound of her voice, Nathan glanced down at the creeper in question before looking mildly her way. The awkwardness was probably going to appear no matter what but he didn't immediately start yelling so maybe that was something.

He pocketed his phone and stood up a little straighter, even. "He likes antiques. You can add that to the collection of creepy facts that you know about him. Though, he likes cross stitching so maybe he can make you a smashing scarf!"

"I do like scarves," Caroline admitted, ignoring the awkward the best she could. "Though it's been kind of hot for them the last couple days." Oh God, was she talking about the weather? "Plus, usually people knit those, not cross stitch. That would be odd."

"Like I know the fucking difference," Nathan said, rolling his eyes. It was something to do with sewing and fabric and what the fuck ever, it was boring.

"Maybe you and Tino can get together and compare notes on scarf making. I'll just have him tell me about it later. And then I will stick scissors in my fucking ears to forget I heard him talk about knitting. The blood will be flowing but I will never be able to hear Tino talk about his knitting like he's about to come again."

"Seriously? He gets that into?" She spared a disturbed glance down the bar at the other worker. "Super creepy. Why do you choose to work with him again?"

"He was here first," Nathan said, shrugging. "I think he lives here...somewhere. I don't know. He does all the shit work I don't want to do so that's reason enough to keep him around. You can go down there and talk to him if you're that interested, you know."

Nathan didn't really feel like playing Tino trivia or anything tonight. And Tino probably wouldn't have minded the company. He might have even looked hopeful or something.

"Yeah, I think I'll skip that conversation," she said, making a face at him like he'd lost his mind. "So...you still serve alcohol here, right? Promise I won't get drunk and vomit on you or anything."

"Yeah, I wasn't worried about that," Nathan told her, shaking his head. "If you decided to puke all over the bar, Tino would be cleaning it up and I'd kick you out."

Was that kind of mean? No, Nathan didn't think so. Or maybe he did. Whatever. "But yeah, there's still alcohol served here. Prohibition has not gone into effect again. What do you want?"

"Yeah, no kicking me out. How about rum and coke? Keep it simple and sweet." She figured easy would be like being nice to him. "I'm thinking alcohol will keep me from freaking out over how we're supposed to study for Friday's final."

Nathan scoffed at the thought of studying for any final. No, he wouldn't be doing that. He just didn't care enough about his academic education to study.

"You can study," Nathan decided, moving to get her drink started. "I'm planning on doing a whole lot of fucking nothing. I'll let Mister Eyebrows throw me out the fucking window if he wants. I'm not studying."

He slid her requested drink across the counter towards her. "Or maybe I'll just cheat off Kate or something. Always good to have a backup plan."

"I would study if I had any idea where to begin," she pointed out. "But then, if you think he might launch us out a window, there's a good chance we won't have to actually write anything for the exam. Maybe it'd be practical and I should be practicing my acting skills or something." And now she would take a thoughtful sip of that drink.

"I really don't know what he's going to do, Caroline," Nathan said, shrugging and shaking his head. "I really don't care that much either. It's my last fucking final and then I'm free to do whatever the hell I want."

Of course, he'd decided to go home but that information was staying with him for the moment. He had no idea why she was trying to talk to him about academics of all things.

"Maybe I'll join the fucking circus. Sideshow of freaks and losers sounds right up my fucking alley."

"Oh yes, because there aren't summer classes to look forward to," she said, grasping that he didn't actually want to be part of this conversation, but still unwilling to give it up. "If you joined the circus, what would your freak power be? Grow super curly long fingernails?"

Nathan glanced down at his very nice hands, thank you, before giving her yet another look. There would be no gross fingernails emanating from these hands.

"Mind reading," he quipped, giving a one shouldered shrug. "It's always been a latent talent. I'd just make sure to develop it more. Why? Would you want a ticket to come see the show?"

"If you were a mind reader? Hell's yes," she replied, working on her drink. "Especially if you were more accurate than a Ouija board or that stupid Magic 8 ball thing. It always told me to try again later. Such a cop out."

"Sounds like operator error," he said lightly, wandering away for a moment to find himself something to drink. That also helped to hide a brief smirk. "I'll work on that mind reading thing so you have something to do this summer in between bouts of shopping and..."

He waved a hand in the air.

"...other shit, I guess."

"Classes," she suggested, filling in that obvious blank. "I take it you aren't planning on doing the whole summer camp at school thing?" Which made her sad, even if that would surprise him.

"Yeah, I'm fucking off back to England," he said, shrugging like it was no big deal. "I didn't really see the point of sticking around this place. Been kind of shitty to me lately."

It was honest even if it meant digging up the awkwardness. He'd gotten tired of ignoring it and didn't want to end up in a conversation about the weather or clothes just to put it off again.

Yeah, she couldn't help frowning at his words, even if some of the shit had been her fault.

"Guess that means you won't be coming back to the room ever, huh?" If he wanted awkward, why not go all the way?

Yep, there was the entire extent of the shit between them right there. Or, well, the results of the awkwardness since Nathan knew those weren't the actual issues.

"Why should I?" Nathan asked, glancing away from that frown and shaking his head. "Not like anyone's wanted me there as of late. I was just a prickly thorn in your side, yeah? It's okay, you can be honest with me. I get it."
