Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 05/09 ].

Since she was doing an exceptionally horrible job of coming into the music shop on Sundays, what with the weekends being for disappearing for adventures and things like that, Ariel was now pleased to have Mondays as her new day. She'd even arrived somewhat on time for her first Monday shift.

Somewhat, of course, meaning within a half hour of when she was expected. That was progress!

She had forgotten, however, her progress on her Backwards Alphabetical Band project, until she remembered just how hard it had been to find an X one! That lead her to W, and W lead her to Whitesnake. She hoped Jono would approve; she knew she certainly liked it!

Seifer had wandered in and was looking around, but the names sort of confused him.

"Do you know which bands are from Seattle?"

Ariel couldn't be more happy that the question was one she had an answer to. Thank you, Jono!

"Ooh, yes!" she said, beaming at the customer who'd just come in. "I sure do! You're looking for grunge type music, right? Like Nirvana and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden?"

Seifer looked over and nodded. "I guess. My roommate mentioned that there was some good music from there, and I thought I would check it out."

He held out his hand and turned on his best smile. "Sorry, I'm new in town. Seifer Almasy." The way he said his name sounded like 'cypher'.

"I figured," Ariel said with a smirk of her own as she took his offered hand with a nice firm shake. "I'd have recognized you, and, well, there was a new influx of students this weekend, so I just sort of assumed. It's nice to meet you, Seifer; I'm Ariel. And my education in music of this world came from one of the bests, so I will get you all set up, have no fear."

Seifer laughed and nodded. "Thank you, Ariel. I guess after this, I should get something to play the music on."

"We can help you out with that, too!" Ariel happily supplied, and the she started moving, down the aisles with a little wave of her hand to get Seifer to follow her. "Portable CD players are probably easiest, especially if you're not from around here or don't have a computer that you can use to transfer tracks onto an MP3 player or an iPod...And I have to say, I like how music gets to be one of your top priorities!"

Seifer followed, mostly because there was a nice view in front of him. "Yeah, sure. Stereo though, because I want speakers so the music is loud. And I'm getting a computer, so I'll be able to transfer them. What's an iPod though?"

"It's just this little portable device that plays all your music!" Ariel said. "I can show you those, too! But, here's a Pearl Jam CD." She spun around as she handed over a CD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_%28Pearl_Jam_album%29). "I think they're from Seattle, and they were one of Jono's favorites. He's my big brother who got me this job here, and you just missed him, but this helped, like, totally reinvent the genre, or something like that. And we should get you at least one Nirvana CD, too, but I like Pearl Jam better myself, because it's a lot easier to understand what they're singing about."

Plus? Mmmm, Eddie Vedder.

"Yeah, I know Jono," he said as he took the CD. He looked over the song titles and nodded. "Working in a music store sounds like fun."

He picked up another CD as they passed by, just because the title jumped out at him. "Recovery? Who's this?" he asks, holding up the case.

"Hm?" Ariel was about halfway toward Kurt Cobain before she stopped and turned back around at the sound of a question. Her head tilted, peeking over at the CD Seifer had plucked out. "I have no idea," she admitted, but then she grinned, reaching out to snatch it away from him. "But we can find out! Come on!"

She planned to be back at the counter, putting the CD into the stereo system before there could be any objections.

Seifer wasn't the type to object to a hot chick getting all excited about something, so he would dutifully follow along after letting go of the CD..

"Are you sure you can listen to that? I mean, it did have an advisory label," he teased.

"Pfffft." Ariel waved a hand, the CD already being placed into the stereo. "It's a parental advisory. An advisory for parents. I'm not a parent, so unless you are, Seifer, I think we can pretty much disregard it."

Seifer snorted and pushed the play button. At first he was a bit dubious but slowly he started to grin, because this? Was pure pissed off in lyrical form.

"I'm not familiar with this type of music, but I like the lyrics," he said. "The beat is pretty good too."

"Boy," said Ariel, but she said it with a giggle. "Someone doesn't sound too happy."

But she couldn't agree with Seifer's comment about the beat; her head already was bobbing along easily. "It's called rap music, I think."

It sounded like he felt some days.

"I think I'll add that one to the pile," he told her as he set the Pearl Jam one down.

"So, what else do you have for me?"

"Hmmmmm...." Ariel tilted her head, taking a moment to consider what they had so far, what Seifer obviously liked, and felt a little bit of a swell of pride at being the one making the music suggestions behind the counter now.

"Heavy metal," she decided. "Call it a hunch, but something's telling me you need some heavy metal."

"Heavy metal, rap, grunge... Yeah, sounds like music made for those crawling out of the gutter," he mused with a laugh.

"Point the way, Ariel."

"Gladly," Ariel's smirk was a wry one as she went to collect for Seifer some Judas Priest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sad_Wings_of_Destiny) and Motörhead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overkill_%28album%29) to get him started. "Is that where you came from, then, Seifer? Right out of the gutter?"

"Pretty much." He picked up a few others in the area, names that just sort of stood out or piqued his interest. "Orphaned, military school, bad influences, yeah."

"What about you? I bet you were like, a cheerleader or something."

"Well, I am one now," Ariel admitted with a laugh. "But before that? Princess, adventurer, hopeless dreamer..."

Mermaid...but she wasn't going to mention that part.

"That's not where you met Jono by any chance, is it?"

"What?" The change in conversational direction distracted him for a moment.

"Oh, no. He helped Squall and Rinoa knock some sense into me, and then helped the three of us keep some psycho chick from destroying our world."

Ariel's eyebrows lifted. "You know Rinoa and Squall, too? Who are you and how do you know all my friends and not me yet? If next you say you also know a fish named Flounder, then I'm officially writing you off as One of Those Things."

He laughed and shook his head. "Sorry, I don't know a flounder. I grew up with Squall and dated Rinoa for a while. I didn't meet Jono until earlier this year though."

"...waaaaaaaait a second," Ariel's jaw dropped just a little bit. "No way, you're her ex?"

She thought that name sounded kind of familiar.

"And you and Squall grew up? Oooh, what does he think about this? Is it going to cause all sorts of drama?"

SHOULD SHE GET SOME POPCORN?

Ariel sounded way to thrilled about this stuff, and it was still kind of funny to him.

"Yeah, I'm the ex. And I still say he's stuck in puberty, and he hates it. Like, yelled at me sort of hate."

He was still proud of that.

"Pfft," Ariel said, before adopting her best Squall sigh. It was pretty good, too; she practiced it a lot. "Whatever."

Seifer actually choked on laughter when she did that.

"Please do that some day when we're both around him at the same time."

"It's a deal," said Ariel, knowing she'd have no regret against it ever since he tried to out emo her that one time last summer. It was about time, then, that she and Squall had another good emo-off. "But you can't hate me if I have trouble keeping a straight face when I do it."

"I swear, no hating," he said solemnly, holding his hand over his heart.

"So, where would you suggest I find a job in this town?"

"See, this is where I wonder if I should promote this place here or the other place I work, Pixie Dust, or suggest somewhere else so I that I can keep those domains all to myself." Ariel tapped her chin in thought. "Jono sort of hired me here; I'm not sure who would handle that now, but at Pixie Dust, that's a clothing store, you'd want to talk to Jenny."

There was a thoughtful pause.

"I think you'd like Jenny."

"Yeah, I don't think I'd do well at a clothing store," he told her with a laugh. "Probably better off here. Although, you can tell me more about this Jenny person."

"She's probably more punk rock than heavy metal," Ariel said, after taking a moment to decide how best to describe Jenny, "and she always hates when I put too much pink out on the shelves. But, actually, I just remembered, she graduated too, so now I don't know who'd be doing the hiring there either..."

If Ariel looked like she'd drifted off for a moment, it was because she was busy imagining herself taking over the store and giving herself the best discount on all the shoes she could ever handle.

"So, I should probably just apply everywhere and just wait it out?" Because that... didn't sound like fun, but neither did being without money soon.

He had no idea where Ariel's brain went, so he held up another CD case. "So, Ariel. This Nirvana group you were talking about? I really should give these Seattle bands a try too."

"Trust me," Ariel assured him. "It's pretty easy to get a job around here, especially in my experience. You basically just say you want to and if they have to openings, it's yours. And right! Nirvana! They're, like, classic grunge, or that's what Jono told me. I'm still learning about some of the music here myself."

"I guess I'll have to leave a note or something saying I want a job here then. Because this place would be cool to work at. Music and cute coworkers."

Yes, Ariel, he is talking about you.

Really? And here she thought he might be talking to the decimated cardboard cut-out of Justin Beiber still underneath the counter.

But Ariel didn't mind, not at all, although she did remind herself that flirting with a good friend's ex-boyfriend could be all sorts of complicated, tempting as it was.

"It is pretty great, I've got to admit. You should just check in later this week; see if anything pops up. You've got my support, though, that's for sure."

He could have been. Beiber could be mistaken for a very unpretty girl at times.

He chuckled, because he was dirty minded like that. "Sure, I'll see what pops up later this week. And talk to the boss too."

Ariel, oblivious to any dirty connotations, gave a firm, stiff nod. "Sounds like a good plan, Seifer. And, other than needing music and needing a job, how are you settling in? Got a good roommate, big sibling?"

"Yes on both. George is a pretty awesome roommate, since she told me about the music here. Alexander is informative. And my professions seem like they're going to be a riot."

"George as in blonde, pretty George who used to be Jono's roommate?" Ariel asked. "So, you got Jono's roommate, you might get Jono's job...Jono's girlfriend is my roommate, so I should probably warn her about you before you get that, too!"

"..." Seifer had to actually process that part. "You're kidding, right? And there is no way I'd steal the guy's girlfriend. He'd fry me like a marshmallow."

He nearly had done that a few months ago. "Plus, Raven can be seriously scary."

"Oh, she's not that bad," Ariel said, shaking her head. "But of course I'm kidding. Maybe you'll just have to settle for his girlfriend's roommate in that case."

Hey, if he could throw in the cute coworker comment, she could throw in that one, right?

Flirting was totally in. "Well, now, Rinoa might hurt me for that. I'd rather not piss her off when we're getting along."

That, and he was a bit of a slut and not making any promises. Plus, she had said she was a princess, which usually meant a king for a daddy and guards and... yeah, not good for him. Or him good for her.

Whether or not it was a good thing probably depended much more on whether or not Seifer liked being electrocuted by magical sea power, really.

"Hurt you?" Ariel laughed. "What about me? There's got to be about fifty different girl codes that'd be breaking. I would never be able to show my face at the sorority again!"

"Oh, yeah, there is that rule about not dating a friend's ex. I should have remembered that after the last fight I caused."

Because that had been memorable. "I'm not allowed in that bar anymore..."

"Oooooh," said Ariel, flinching with sympathy, but with a faint grin. "Hey, look on the bright side, though; there's at least two bars here now, so if you get kicked out of one, you can just head on off to the other."

Because the world can't end on my only day off this week.
