Bod wasn't exactly sure what he was doing here. He'd gotten some late night voicemail from someone named Nathan, calling himself Kate's friend and telling Bod that he was leaving and someone needed to cover the Caritas shift lest people be left without alcohol. The only reason Bod was here now was because he did recognize the name (as the guy who had slept with Kate once) and couldn't ignore his helpful streak.

Tino was quiet but Bod found him slightly creepy with the staring and...even more staring. Bod didn't know what that was about but he wasn't going to ask. He was just going to pour himself a glass of water and lean against the bar while he waited to help anyone that might need it. Bod really wondered why Nathan had chosen him for that voicemail. Bod and alcohol were not that good of a mix.

This was definitely not what Kate had been expecting when she'd decided to end her shift at the cinema by having a drink at the bar. In fact, she'd been expecting to see Tino, alone, possibly celebrating being rid of Nathan. Or crying into a glass of whiskey over not having gotten a goodbye either.

This was infinitely better, though, and she was grinning when she made it to the bar proper.

"I received the oddest call just a few days ago asking me to do this," Bod explained, unable not to laugh at her obvious delight at seeing him. "I wanted to be helpful."

This was guaranteed free drinks, that was plenty to be delighted about! Oh, and that whole boyfriend thing too. "A call?" she asked as she hopped onto a bar stool. "From who? It wasn't Tino, was it? 'Cause that'd be desperate on his part."

"No, it was from your friend, Nathan," Bod answered, laughing. "He left me a voicemail just a few days ago and asked me to do this and while I was confused, I didn't think I could really say no either. He seemed convincing enough."

"... Nathan?" Well, this was his shift, but still, that got one of her eyebrows climbing higher. "You got a voicemail from Nathan."

"Yes?" Bod suddenly felt like he'd said something wrong. "Just a few days ago. He was apparently clearing things up before departing and I guess this was one of those things."

Kate... was looking mighty unimpressed right about now. "He passed his stupid work shift on to you," she said, and despite the scorn on that last word, she wasn't actually angry at Bod, "but he couldn't stay long enough to actually say goodbye to his friends."

"...did I do something wrong?" Bod asked, looking worried. "I'm sorry. I was just trying to be helpful. I can leave."

Kate blinked. "What? No!" She shook her head quickly. "No, no no, you didn't do anything wrong. He did."

"I was just trying to be helpful," he explained warily. "I only know him by name and it was just a voicemail so I didn't ask about the circumstances. I'm sorry."

"Nothing about it is your fault, okay?" Kate sighed, brushing a hand back through her hair before leaning an elbow against the bartop. "Nothing to be sorry for. I like that you're here, means I'll probably get my drinks free."

"You're upset, though," Bod pointed out because that was quite obvious. "What's the matter?"

"I don't know." Well, actually she did. She'd already half said it, too. "I'm just bummed out."

"I'm sorry," he said, reaching for one of her hands. "Is there anything I can do to help? I'm here."

"What kind of drink do you want?" Bod asked, bringing her fingers up to his lips and kissing each knuckle gently.

"I don't really care," she said. "Some rum thing? Except with maybe more other non-alcoholic stuff than the actual rum?"

Because it didn't seem like a night to get too drunk.

"All right." And then Bod had to stop so he could look a little confused. "...what goes well with rum?"

Okay, Kate had to be a little amused at that. A knowledgeable bartender he was not. "Fruity things? I'm pretty sure that, for instance, a Singapore Sling has pineapple juice and stuff in it?"

She did not know too much either. She just drank the stuff.

"I'll see what I can do," Bod said, giving her hand one more squeeze before locating a bottle of rum. Now, it was time to find something that looked nominally fruity.

"How was your day at work?" Bod asked while he searched. "Good?"
