Long-Term Finance Class [Community Center, Thursday evening]

There were two very unique personalities at the front of the classroom in the community center: one tall, blond and almost glowing (though never, he'd tell you, sparkling) with paleness, and the other was shorter, darker, and showing all of the signs of only having a casual (if any) acquaintance with personal hygiene. The taller one spoke first. "I am Eric Northman," he began, "and this is a class to teach you about learning the tricks of long-term personal finance. After all," he smiled, looking slightly fangy, "if you are planning to live forever, it just won't do to be poor throughout."

Jack nodded solemnly. "And since this is our first class together, please give us your names, how rich you are, where your money is located and if it is well protected--" he trailed off under Eric's withering stare. "Just those first two things," he amended, "and once we're done with that, I shall teach you to cheat at cards."

Eric didn't say anything about that part. Gambling was a viable way to make money as long as you cheated better than the other guy.

Isabela had failed to sign in. She didn't see what putting her name in a book would do. She was just here out of... boredom and it wouldn't hurt knowing more about the man who paid her to stand behind a bar.

She snorted at the required introductions. "I'm Isabela, and asking me about my money is like asking me about my age. You just don't do it."

She looked over at Jack and smirked. "And I don't need you to learn me to cheat."

"Sometimes people are remarkably...stupid," Jack replied, "and so it never hurts to ask. And just how good are you?"

Re: Introduce yourself!

[identity profile] rivaini-pirate.livejournal.com 2011-05-12 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Isabela couldn't argue with that logic, and if they were that stupid then they deserved to get mugged. So she let his reply pass by as she smirked at his question. "Better than you could ever dream to be."

Modest? She was not.

With the twitchy annoyance Kate had been feeling all week, she was actually missing classes because there was only so much training and moping around a person could do. Also, the combination of Eric and Jack promised to be entertaining, and she'd been failing at catching the former while in her actual-age form for a while. So, here she was.

"Kate Gregson," she introduced herself. "And I'm a recent high school graduate with no real prospects, so... my money is largely still in other people's bank accounts. I'm more looking into getting it into mine, at this point."

"So you'd like to learn to break into banks, then," Jack said jovially. "I think that would be a lovely field trip!"
vanillajello: (Calm and looking at you.)

Kate paused. Well, you could take it like that, couldn't you? "Not quite what I meant. Maybe something slightly more legal?"

Bo hadn't even known there was a class here today, let alone planned to attend it; she'd wandered into the community center hoping it contained a library she could poke around in. Once she heard her boss' voice coming from the room, though, she couldn't resist peeking in.

Just in time to see the fangs and hear the bit about living forever. Pardon the girl who didn't sign in banging her forehead gently against the doorframe. "Hi, I'm Bo, and I'm an idiot."

Oh, right, there was something about money. "With about two hundred bucks and a jacket pocket full of Canadian change to her name at the moment."

"Yes, you are, sweet thing," Isabela agreed. "You never know who in here might be interested in picking your pocket."

Which was perhaps just Isabela. Even if she had no idea what Canadian was.

That wasn't why she was an idiot; it's not like the roll of notes was on her; it lived with her collection of fake IDs in a lunchbox under the old hardware store counter, behind three cans of wasp spray and a roll of duct tape.

"You want to pick my pocket for enough change to buy a cheeseburger and coffee, you're welcome to." Or just for the hell of it, that would be fine too. What? Bo was feeling dumb, not blind. She dumped said handful out on the nearest desk, then shook her head. "I stand corrected; there's a toonie in there too; you could get fries."

Sam would just be over here trying not to crack up, and also trying to ignore the sudden urge for rum. "I'm Sam," he said, because he wasn't sure if Jack had enough going on upstairs to remember him. "And I'm a college student, so I don't have much in the way of money, but I'm really well versed in credit card fraud."

Re: Introduce yourself!

[identity profile] capt-maxfactor.livejournal.com 2011-05-13 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Excellent!" Jack said. "Perhaps you would be interested in telling the class about it some time? Credit cards are a little beyond my expertise, as it were."

Behind him, Eric rolled his eyes.

The fact that Hermione was in a class on finances was a testament to how much she already missed learning in a class environment, and she was wondering if maybe this had been the right call.

"My name is Hermione Granger, and why do I have to tell you how much money I have now?"

Counting Cards!

[identity profile] capt-maxfactor.livejournal.com 2011-05-12 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
After an insanely long time, no love, LJ introductions, Jack gathered the class around some desks and taught them how to count cards (http://www.countingedge.com/tutor.php) in blackjack, then left them to play among themselves or practice with that javascript.

Re: Counting Cards!

[identity profile] rivaini-pirate.livejournal.com 2011-05-12 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Isabela took a seat, shuffling the cards. They weren't entirely the same as the games back home, but the principle was and it'd been easy enough to adjust to.

No, she really didn't need to practise her cheating.
vanillajello: (Yeah right.)

Re: Counting Cards!

[personal profile] vanillajello 2011-05-12 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
... Yeah, Kate was maybe going to take a moment to just familiarize herself with this whole card-counting thing on her own. Not like she'd even ever played blackjack before.

This wasn't necessarily what she'd been expecting from this class, but she'd lived on the island long enough to know it could've been something far more random too.
nookiepowered: (dubious (wary))

Re: Counting Cards!

[personal profile] nookiepowered 2011-05-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Bo wondered if it was even worth trying; she knew how to play blackjack from waitressing in a casino for a bit, but she wasn't any good at it. She watched for a while, but shook her head. "If I have to get money quick, I've got easier ways."

That was actually less dirty than it sounded, if only slightly.

Re: Counting Cards!

[personal profile] vanillajello 2011-05-12 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, you and me both," Kate sighed, and it wasn't actually dirty at all. Mostly because she wasn't going back to that whole webcam thing, or anything like it, ever. "I don't think I have the attention span for counting cards."

Yeah, Hermione was in the wrong class. She'd be back next week, but she was in the wrong class.

"This isn't even close to ethical," she muttered, frowning at the cards and folding her arms.

This class is open to everyone: students, teachers, townies...and is far from traditional.

Um, obviously.

Have fun!
