The Perk- Sunday afternoon

After being here a week, Hermione was beginning to feel like she was settling back into things. Of course it would be different than it had been before; she wasn't living in the dorms, she wouldn't be attending classes like she used to, and she was going to have to get over the fact that she was teaching students who were not much younger than her. In fact, there was a chance some of them might be older. Still, there were classes she could take- ignore that one had involved cheating at gambling on week one- and Rikku was here along with a few others she recognized, and she didn't have to yell at anyone at all to be quiet in the common room while she tried to compose a letter home.

That was what she was doing now. She'd brought her things to the Perk just to sit and enjoy a cappucino and sit down and finally put everything from the week onto paper to send off. Explaining the Vikings was taking quite a while.

[Totally open!]

Dick was looking over news from Gotham on his phone as he walked into the Perk. It was all pretty typical. Robbery, robbery, Batman and Batgirl captured Joker, Scarecrow escaped, WayneTech announces new technology, yadda yadda. It almost annoyed him that pretty much nothing significant changed in so long.

But when he put that away and got his coffee, he spotted someone else who looked to be slightly too old to be a student. Figuring he could probably do with a conversation that had nothing to do with Gotham right now, he decided to approach. "Teacher, townie, or random visitor?"

"Dick Grayson, fellow teacher. I run the circus workshop," Dick said. "And if people can accept that there's a circus workshop, I'm sure they can believe that someone your age can teach. It probably sounds less silly, to be honest."

"Well, I'm using circus things to teach life lessons," Dick said. "But next week the students will be able to dress like clowns if they want. So hopefully it straddles some kind of line between useful and ridiculous."

"That's what I was going for," Dick said. "It's not going to be the weirdest thing the students experience, but maybe it'll be weird enough to stick with them."

"It doesn't sound like you would have taken my class if you were a student," Dick mentioned. "It's okay. The circus isn't for everyone."

"No offense taken," Dick said. "So what are you teaching? I promise I won't just write it off to be petty."

"...Like being a sidekick?" Dick asked.

IF ONLY YOU KNEW, HERMIONE. IF ONLY YOU KNEW.

"Well, that should prove handy around here. From what I remember of Fandom, there was someone with a special destiny rushing off into danger at least twice a month."

[identity profile] exboywonder.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you going to bust them in class if you hear about them rushing off on radio?" Dick asked.

"Well, fingers crossed for your sake," Dick said, showing the fingers in his non-coffee hand crossed for luck. "May your students be well-behaved all summer."

"If they do, Friday will be a little extra interesting," Dick said. "I'll let you get back to your letter, Hermione. But it was nice meeting you."

His first class had gone well enough and to celebrate, Reed had spent an inordinate amount of time reading up on the oddities of the island and trying to come up with logical reasons why it could have happened.

That might be why he needed coffee. Damn it, Fandom. Stop breaking science!

"Hello," he said politely to someone he was assuming was a student. Sorry, Hermione!

It totally was popular. It was the next big hang out!

"Is it?" Reed asked, glancing around to find these other coffee drinkers. Sadly this wasn't him being sarcastic. He was preoccupied by thoughts! Thinking of thoughts!

Well that made far too much sense. "It seems to be a surprisingly quiet town," Reed replied, utterly failing at getting the barista's attention. "All things considered."

She just seemed... busy. Talking to someone on the phone. Reed glanced from her back over to Hermione with a tiny shrug. He had patience! Possibly too much still...

Somewhere, Johnny was making fun of him. Somewhere.

"I read about that! The police on island have excellent records of these things."

"Teaching has taken up much less time than I'd expected when I took the position."

[identity profile] notawoodwind.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Miss Porter informed me that they were very good about keeping information available to the public," Reed admitted.

"Reed Richards," he said, offering a hand. "I teach astrophysics."

A beat.

"And arts and crafts."

Damn you, Johnny.

[identity profile] notawoodwind.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Not entirely a willing one," Reed admitted. "A--colleague tampered with my class details."

[identity profile] notawoodwind.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Reed opened his mouth as if to answer that seriously before just shaking his head. "Not very well."

[identity profile] notawoodwind.livejournal.com 2011-05-16 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I think I ought to just be glad if they learn anything from it." A beat. "And not that there is atmosphere in space."

DAMN IT, TREASURE PLANET.
