All And Sundries, Sunday

"Suzanne! Suzanne!" Dolf crowed as he swept up the store that day. His hair was a mess and he'd been fighting earworms for over a day now, and he'd finally just given up. "Suzanne, ik ben stapelgek op jooooou!"

He had absolutely no clue where it came from. Or why the store had been renamed.

Or why his football jersey currently read VAN BASTEN instead of SNEIJDER.

But keeping the songs in was turning out to be terrible for his health, so he just went along with it. "Carriere maken! Totdat de bom valt!"

Madison had wandered into the store and spent probably about an hour drifting around, looking at everything with a sort of quiet interest before she finally picked up several large boxes of salt and brought them over to the counter. She dropped them on the counter and gave the boy behind it a smile. "Hi."

Well, the salt was all Madison needed, but since the boy had asked...Her eyes drifted around a little at all and sundries around the counter and she reached out and added a pack of batteries to the salt. "And this," she said. She found a lighter. "And this." A pack of gum. "And this."

"Where's the beef?" she added pleasantly. "Pepsi, the choice of a new generation."

Madison shrugged. "That's okay," she said. "This should be fine, thank you!"

"New?" Madison started, as if uncertain about the word, but the fact that it was followed by, "-ish?" suggested that she was more uncertain about it applied to her. She shrugged again. "I'm...Madison." After the Avenue, of course. "What's your name?"

"Gr-r-r-reat!" Madison said, with a smile as enthusiastic as her answer, which seemed very similar to that of a certain animated cartoon cereal spokestiger. She lifted her hands, to make a shape. "I'm learning so many...ways to talk on the big black box in the..." She bit her lip, remembering what it was called, "common room. It's everywhere you want to be!"

"If you've got the time," Madison parroted with a pleased grin, "we've got the beer!"

Which was close enough to a yes, as she saw it, even though yes wasn't quite the word she was looking for.

"I think I'm good with this," Madison said, looking over her pickings. But then she picked up a keychain from a display on the counter. "And this."

"Put it on my American Express!" Madison said. "Never leave home without it!"

But she realized that her current fashion of an oversized I &heart; N.Y. t-shirt and a long pair of legs afford no pocket space in which to hold an American Express card, even if she did have one, and she frowned as her hands realized the lack of said pockets.

"Oh," she said. "It looks like I left home without it."
