Caritas: Friday Night

The thing that sucked most about summer was that the sun was up much longer. These days sunrise was around 5:30, and sunset was at 8:30. Sleeping 15 hours of out 24 was boring. And the days were getting even shorter now.

Jessica's life was so hard.

But come 8:30, she sped over to Cartias. Tino had already opened up earlier and covered the bar until she arrived and gave her a look for being late. "Bite me," she snapped at him. He wisely didn't take her up on that offer.

If she was going to be in Fandom for a few days, Jaina was not going to spend the whole time in her hotel room. Especially not when she was stuck thinking serious thoughts a lot of the time. So tonight, she was going back to the old workplace, because if she didn't get out she was going to go insane.

"Hey there," she said, taking what used to feel like her usual seat.

"Well hi there," Jessica said with a smile. "Haven't seen you around here for awhile."

"Haven't been around for a while," she smiled back. "Moving to another galaxy makes it hard to stop in for a drink."

"Can the portals really take you that far?" Jessica said, awed. "I mean, I thought it was pretty amazin' that they can take me to Louisiana in just a few seconds."

"It works for me," Jaina shrugged. "There are some issues from time to time-" Like getting stuck for five years. "-but it beats long trips in a ship when you want to get somewhere quick."

"That'd get real borin' fast," Jessica agreed.

She cocked her head, thinking. "I wonder what that would do to someone like me," she said. "I mean, if we were so far away from the sun that there wasn't nothin' you could really call a day, could I stay up all the time?"

"I guess so," she said, thinking about it. "You guys get affected by the time change, right? I don't know all your rules or anything, but I think that'd probably work."

"The long days in the summer time suck," Jessica grumbled. "I mean, I can try to stay up longer, but then I get the bleeds and that's just gross."

Oh, look, another term Jaina didn't know. "The bleeds?"

"Well, if I try to stay up past sunrise? I start to feel really weak," Jessica explained. Trust her, she'd experimented plenty of times while she'd been stuck in Bill's house. "And then I start leakin' blood out of my eyes and ears and nose and it's just real messy."

That... sounded kind of really horrible. And it was yet another reason she thought their schedule just sucked. "Does it hurt?" Jaina wondered.

"Not really," Jessica said with a shrug. "I feel real tired when it's happenin', but it doesn't hurt, not like sunlight or something like that."

"I could never deal with your schedule," she said, not for the first time. "That would be me every day."

"You don't have much of a choice about sleepin' after awhile," Jessica said. "Well, I guess Eric can stay up longer than me on account of him being real old, but the most I've been able to do was about an hour."

"He's older, so he gets a later bedtime?" Jaina said, endlessly amused by that thought.

Jessica snorted in quite an unladylike way. "Something like that," she said. "He's so old he knows all the tricks about bein' a vampire. But he's gonna teach me things, since he's kind of my adopted maker now."

"What kind of stuff do you still have to learn?" she wondered. "Besides potentially ripping people's heads off."

A second later she hoped she hadn't given her any ideas.

"Mostly about takin' care of myself and learnin' to fight anybody who might try to kill me," Jessica said. "Bill taught me some stuff, like glamorin' and a little bit about how to fight. But Eric didn't like it when I used food in a fight once."

It was RIGHT THERE. She couldn't help it!

[And now I must sleeeeeeeeeep!]

Jaina's eyes widened. "Food? In a real fight?" Okay, granted, she'd been in a food fight when she was younger, but that was probably not the same thing.

[Night!]

Jessica grinned. "Well, I was fightin' another vampire at a party, and I was tryin' to reach for a weapon, but all I found was a cake. It blinded her thought!"

Jaina, who took her fighting so seriously, resisted the urge to facepalm. "Oh, sweetie," she said, shaking her head. "But at least you blinded her."
