Mystery Sign Theatre 3000, Wednesday

Kate had been away for an entire week, repressing the hell out of the reasons she'd wanted to bolt in the first place. And it had worked. She'd genuinely had fun just hanging out with Bod and her family and unpacking and organizing their room and all the other silly stuff.

But however good she'd felt while away, it all dissolved soon enough once she'd made it to work. She felt on edge, not quite as badly as she had for most of her shift last week, but still twitchy enough to be constantly fiddling with some of the concessions (as if they weren't neat enough) or playing around on her phone (as if she was actually planning to text or call anyone).

Occasionally sneaking in to watch the movie on show today soothed her somewhat, though she had no real idea why. Lord knows a summer blockbuster wasn't meant to do that, but she wasn't going to question it. She'd take anything she could get.

Hopefully she wouldn't be in the theater when Hannibal strolled in. He hadn't intended to come back for a visit so soon after his last one but he hadn't seen Kate and he didn't want to get yelled at for calling her when he'd just been around two days ago.

So, he popped back in Wednesday, basking outside in the sun for awhile before stepping in and glancing around. He didn't know if he'd ever been in here when he'd been on the island as a student.

Kate had actually been poking her head into the theater just then (well, there was no one currently in there, so no one could complain about her propping the door open), but when she heard someone come in she turned around, letting the door close.

And promptly grinned, twitchy mood at least temporarily dispelled. "Hannibal!"

"Oh, you look busy," Hannibal joked having seen where she'd come from. "I can come back when you're not busily watching a movie and making this extremely long line of customers wait around for the pleasure of your service."

"Super busy," Kate drawled, approaching him with the intent of hugging him. Which... may have said a lot about all the random shit she'd been going through lately, that loss of acting anywhere near guarded. "Your fault for coming in at our peak hour."

Hannibal didn't back away or sidestep her at least even if there was a split second of panic before he tamped it down and half smiled at her. "I don't think I've ever been in here before. Better late than never, right?"

"Still miles ahead of most people on this island," Kate replied with a sigh as she wrapped her arms around him. "I mean, even I only came here a couple of times for class before I got the job."

"How's it going?" Hannibal asked, returning her embrace though he kept it loose just in case. "Enjoying graduated life?"

"It's okay, I guess," Kate replied, shrugging. "Kind of just your normal Fandom life, only I don't have to go to classes anymore."

"I always liked the whole not going to classes part," Hannibal said, smiling. "Especially when the island ends up in places like this. I was here a few days ago and actually couldn't go back to New York without chilling on the beach for awhile."

Kate raised an eyebrow up at him. "You were here and you didn't call?" See, he could still get complaints about that. Just teasing, not yelling. "I'm hurt."

It was probably a good thing she was messing around with that phone, because Mitchell wouldn't have found it in him to try to call a second time.

But right now, it was ringing.

So it was. Kate looked at the name for a moment when the call popped up, and just for a second or two she considered just not answering.

But as if she could do that. With a sigh to herself, and an even tone prepared, she picked up the call. "Yeah?"

"Hey, Kate." Mitchell's voice didn't sound completely steady, and that singular statement was followed by a prolonged silence.

A very prolonged silence.

Mitchell stared at the wall.

Well, hello there twitchiness, nice of you to make a return. Kate straightened up behind the concessions stand, listening to the silence, that unsteadiness echoing in her head.

"What is it?"

Annie died yesterday, Kate. Annie was exorcised yesterday. Annie isn't with us anymore. I'm sorry, it's Annie, she's passed over--

Forming the words shouldn't be that difficult. It wasn't Mitchell's first death. Wasn't even his first passed-on ghost.

"Look, it's..." he started, then faltered. "I'm sorry, it's... yesterday, this... uh..."

Come on. Say 'it's Annie'. That alone should tell her enough.

"Yes?" Kate prompted, trying to sound... supportive, or something, even as she started to feel really seriously uncomfortable, guessing at what he had such a hard time saying.

None of the options were something she wanted to hear.

"Mitchell, what is it?"

Mitchell stared harder at the wall. Come on. Kate had been her friend. She deserved to know.

After another long few seconds of silence, George finally pried the phone out of his hands. "Kate, it's George," he said. "Annie's gone. I'm sorry."

Mitchell shut his eyes and dropped his head back against the wall.

Silence was the name of the game today, because for the moment Kate was speechless, grasping for the chair she kept behind the concessions stand to sit down. She'd been expecting something about Lucy; that she would've handled okay, but Annie. That just took the breath out of her.

"W-what?" she asked, after a moment. "Gone?" That was just insane. Seriously, she couldn't deal with "But, b-- how?"

"Mitchell's homicidal ex-girlfriend got her pet priest to exorcise her," George said. That might not have been exactly what happened, but George was as angry as Mitchell was grieving, and he felt allowed. "After trying to blow up Mitchell, actually blowing up the rest of the vampires in Bristol, and, oh, lying to Nina and I so she could kill us too."

Mitchell looked up at him, staring.

Then he beckoned for the phone back.

Yeah, Kate's ensuing "WHAT?" was enough to startle the guy working the box office. Or dozing at the box office, as he had been up until a moment ago.

Kate didn't care about him right now. Seriously. What the everloving fuck.
