Mystery Sign Theatre 3000, Wednesday

Kate had been away for an entire week, repressing the hell out of the reasons she'd wanted to bolt in the first place. And it had worked. She'd genuinely had fun just hanging out with Bod and her family and unpacking and organizing their room and all the other silly stuff.

But however good she'd felt while away, it all dissolved soon enough once she'd made it to work. She felt on edge, not quite as badly as she had for most of her shift last week, but still twitchy enough to be constantly fiddling with some of the concessions (as if they weren't neat enough) or playing around on her phone (as if she was actually planning to text or call anyone).

Occasionally sneaking in to watch the movie on show today soothed her somewhat, though she had no real idea why. Lord knows a summer blockbuster wasn't meant to do that, but she wasn't going to question it. She'd take anything she could get.

"So, you're ignoring it?" Hannibal guessed. "In the hopes that it'll go away if you do that?"

"Well, no." She wrinkled her nose and looked away. "I just don't really know what to do about it."

"If you didn't hurt anyone permanently, then you just do your best to forgive yourself and move on," Hannibal said, shrugging. "It wasn't your fault that you ended up that way."

"I know that," Kate replied, glancing at him again. "I just don't... know that." She rubbed her forehead. "Ugh, it's just a big mess."

"I think you're making it into a bigger mess than it is," Hannibal replied, tilting his head. "You have people blaming you for what happened?"

"Not really," she admitted. "I mean, I'm pretty sure Nathan is never really going to stop bringing up his broken nose, but that's just him and it's no big deal."

"So, why's it a big mess?" Hannibal wondered. "What's stopping you from letting it go and moving on?"

Oh look, her boots got a little more interesting again. "Because I was in her head for a weekend," Kate said. "And sometimes it's like she's still there. Not like -- not like I want to hurt people, but just... It was just so trippy, you know? To be me, but not. And..."

She cut that thought short.

"Yeah and I was like that for about three months," he reminded her because he knew what she was talking about. "If you're not feeling the urge to rip out throats, she's not still there. What's left, that's just us."

"Yeah but it wouldn't take much of a false move for me to be her," Kate muttered, largely under her breath. She sighed. "Yeah, I know, I know, but it was a lot all at once."

"You're not a vampire anymore," Hannibal told her, crossing his arms. "Stop thinking you are."

"I don't think I'm a vampire, Hannibal," she replied, mildly. "See, this is why I've mostly been ignoring it. 'Cause that's all anyone can really say."

"Um, I'm allowed to say these things," Hannibal decided, nodding. "Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I know what it's like in your head so there."

"I'm sorry but you don't," Kate replied, keeping herself from sounding petulant. Somehow. "Because apart from my Technicolor nightmares, it's not really the vampire stuff that's lingering on in there."

"What's lingering on in there?" Hannibal asked, sounding challenging. "Try me."

"Everything else," Kate replied, lifting her chin some. "How bitter and messed up she was. How lonely and sad. She was seriously fucking thrilled to be here because here, there weren't so many other vampires and she could be a somebody. Back home she was nothing, just... Leto's toy. Already pushed aside. All she wanted was to matter."

"Kate, she was a vampire," Hannibal said, frowning at her. "Yeah, she was a girl too, I get that, but she was thrilled to be here because there were humans and blood she could drink. I was pretty much a nobody too but it was just how things went. Why is that lingering? That wasn't you, that's not your life."

Kate opened her mouth, but then no words came out, and she ended up just waving a hand. "Look, just forget I said anything, okay?"

"Really?" Hannibal asked, frowning at that. "Really, you're gonna do that shit?"

"Did you just go momentarily deaf or something?"

Or did he just forget who he was talking to?

"Weak, Kate," he said and rolled his eyes. "I was just trying to help and you just closed yourself off."

"Yeah well, you think you understand but you don't," Kate replied, wrapping her arms around herself. "Plus now I'm feeling guilty on top of everything else."

"All right, so maybe I'll just go," Hannibal said, shaking his head and turning to leave. "Thanks for the chat, Kate. Appreciate that."

Kate let him get a few steps away before she found herself talking again. "I'm sorry, okay. I am. Apparently I can't talk to most of my friends anymore."

"Yeah, I'm not gonna stick around to have someone tell me I don't know what it's like to be a vampire or to have that lingering around," Hannibal decided, shaking his head. "I know what it's freaking like."
