Turtle & Canary; Tuesday [ 07/12 ].

With his class finished in the morning, Shunsui realized that he had plenty of day still ahead of him, and he remembered he usually ducked into the shop on Tuesdays to do a little bit of working and reminding Apu-san that he was still his boss, and so there he was, strolling in with a whistling tune on his lips and a chuckle for the expected groan out of his poor assistant manager.

"How's our employee stock looking, Apu-san ♥?" asked Shunsui, conversationally, sounding quite a bit like he had no intention of really bothering with hiring if they were lacking a few positions. Everyone he knew on staff did such a good job that they were surely a strong enough force to hold this place together.

Knowing this, Apu roundly ignored Shunsui and continued sweeping the aisles. Shunsui continued whistling and settled down behind the counter, feeling quite managerial and important.

Worst. Boss. Ever. Or best, depending on your perspective.

Since she didn't want to have her plans frustrated before she even got out of the store, Kenzi was-- amazingly-- prepared to pay for what she wanted.

"Hmmmmm... hi. I need socks. Red socks. Really, really, really red socks. At least four, maybe five, pairs?"

Shunsui was in the beginnings of a nap when the girl came up to the counter, and he was still a little sleepy when he pushed his hat up from where it shielded his eyes from the bright florescent store lights. "Hmmmm?" he asked. "Red sake ♥?"

Kenzi blinked at him, tilting her head at him to see under the hat. "Yup. Red socky. Sockies. Socks. Those!" She considered. "Also, peanuts. Maybe cashews?"

"How about almonds ♥?" asked Shunsui, who now pushed his hat back a little further and straightened. He offered the girl a faint smile. "And you'll have to forgive me, my dear, but my head's still a bit cloudy. Did you mean sa-kay, as in the most wonderful nectar of the gods, or socks, those pesky things to put on your feet to suffocate them ♥?"

Guess who had roundly refused to wear tabi for centuries?

"Almonds are cool. They're not for me, anyway. And I mean both! Both is good!" Kenzi beamed. He was offering her booze! Of course she was going to accept. "Red socks too, I like red... you're not good with socks?" She looked down at his feet, tilting her head in slight confusion.

[grrr, LJ, eating my comment and not catching it 'til now.]

"I prefer my little tootsies to be as free as an autumn wind through the willow branches ♥," said Shunsui with a chuckle, giving his toes a little wiggle as he leaned back to put his unsocked, sandaled feet up on the counter. He reclined back in his chair, arms going up to be a pillow for his head. "But you'll find socks in aisle ~~handwavey1~~, nuts in aisle ~~handwavey2~~, and the good stuff unfortunately all the way in the back of the store..."

Such a tragedy, that the booze was so far away from the counter; why hadn't he changed that yet? Oh, right. Effort.

Kenzi surveyed her own feet in response to that, and said, "That's poetic. But you must have some tough feet there, dude." It made her wiggle her own toes in her sandals. "Ha! Be right back!"

She zoomed off to the first aisle, zoomed by to the second aisle, stopped, twirled around, grabbed a bucket of bleach from another aisle, zoomed to the back--

There was probably audible squealing at that point. "Tiny bottles! Dude!"

A terrible disparaging sigh slipped out of Shunsui. "I know," he muttered, to no one in particular since the girl clearly wouldn't be able to hear him from here. "A travesty!"

But perfect for what Kenzi had in mind. And for herself, hey, you never knew.

With the clink of bottles into a hastily grabbed basket, padded with the six pairs of socks, Kenzi zoomed back to the check-out and put her purchases down. "I couldn't drink a big bottle anyway. I added in some rum and some vodka." She beamed at him and then ducked down to retrieve her money from her socks. "This is another reason to wear socks," her voice floated upward. "Good carrying space."

"That," said Shunsui, as he started to ring the girl up, "is why I have such flowing robes ♥."

Well, that, and another reason he might add if she were older.

"Any reason why they must be red?" he wondered.

"No reason!"

Kenzi's tell, that was not seen in class, was that her voice sometimes got a little higher when she was up to mischief.

"I just like red." She straightened and started carefully counting out money, looking excessively cheerful.

"....Clearly," Shunsui noted, coming up with her strikehandwavey total. "Perhaps that explains why you need six pairs of them ♥."

"I love the way you talk," Kenzi said, swerving around that observation. "Seriously." She handed over the money, smiling.

And Shunsui had to chuckle a little at that. And hope that he was much smoother than that when he dodged around things. "Thank you, my dear ♥," he said, taking the compliment and running with it as he figured he always should. "With a voice such as this, like gently-mossed rocks tumbling down a gentle mountain slope, I try to use it to the best of its ability ♥."

Most likely. Kenzi was still learning and all. "I am so stealing that phrase," she told him, taking her bags. "Thanks for your help!"

"Anytime, anytime ♥." Shunsui waved his hand like it was no big deal, because now he could go ahead and take a nap and Apu-san couldn't give him crap about not doing anything all day.

There is a cat-shaped bump in the blanket over the couch. D'awwww.
