Sock Hop - Community Center, Saturday Evening (8/20)

It was Saturday night and time to grab your best gal for one heck of a dance. Or your best guy. Maybe your best sentient robot. Look, Fandom didn't judge your lifestyle choices.

The community center was decorated with the requisite streamers and glittery things to make it look like a disco threw up all over the 50's. But it was hardly a dance without unfortunate glitter, right? Right!

So, throw on a poodle skirt (or leather jacket) and get ready for a good time! And remember, this dance is open to all!

Oh, and fruit punch. Mmmm.

What Peter had decided to wear to this shin-dig was... pretty much what he usually wore, if scaled up a little bit for the opportunity. He hadn't let Val coerce him into coming this time - he was fully intent on working the room and finding some people with powers to throw in with.

Theme? Topher scoffed at themes. So he showed up anyway in his usual sweater vest, hair mussed due to having only woken up an hour earlier.

Mainly, he was here for the free food.

"Hey!" Topher said around a mouthful of hot dog. "'Sup? Lame party, right?"

Guess who didn't know that things were currently tense between them?

Yay, people! And dancing! And snacks! And cute clothes!

"Topher," Peter greeted. Amicably. Sort of. "I just got here, so I wouldn't know."

He hadn't forgotten about you bringing infectious alien goo into his room, no.

"Food's good," Topher supplied helpfully. "Except that, uh, casserole thing." Some lucky person would be fortunate enough to find a small plate of it abandoned on the food table!

"Seems kind of weird they'd throw a dance the week before that whole picnic thing. Like, come on, who's that social?"

...Most people...?

"Oh, I don't know," Peter drawled, "It might be because last year's seniors are leaving, or getting a chance to socialise with one's familiars before diving into the throng of chattering newbies. So to speak."

Yes, he decided, he was going to leave the porn in Topher's room as soon as possible. Maybe tomorrow.

Meow.

Topher whistled. "Someone doesn't like par-ties!" he sing-songed. Reaching to try to pat Peter on the shoulder, he comforted him, "Don't worry, man. It'll be over before you know it."

One day he would actually use his genius powers to interpret someone's behavior, you know, correctly. Maybe. Not today.

Nathan only vaguely knew what the fuck a sock hop was but hey, he tried to dress the part anyway. For him, that meant combing his hair a bit, cuffing his skinny jeans, wearing a pair of beat up Converse and pairing it with a loosened tie.

If it wasn't sock hop attire, he didn't give a fuck. He looked damn good and that's what mattered. At least he didn't have to shove himself into an uncomfortable suit.

The look Topher got upon patting him may have radiated I am going to take your hand off. A little.

"Actually, I'm fine with parties," he said. "I'm a little less fine with people leaving microbes all over my possessions. Really, Topher?"

Ooookay, Peter had officialy gone from grouchy to scary.

"Ooooh," Topher winced. "You mean, uh. With the... rock... thing."

Yes, Topher. With the rock-thing.

"I was wearing gloves!" he hastened to defend himself.

Gloves that he had left on.

Peter's expression shifted to friendly. "Topher, buddy, no need to get defensive," he said. "I'm just wondering if you know what gloves were meant for."

"Uh, yeah," Topher said, like it was obvious. "To avoid touching the rock."

Duh.

Jeans? Check. T-shirt? Check. Leather jacket? Check.

That hadn't been too hard and maybe all dances should have a 50s theme. Even if Jake couldn't remember that the 50s were quite so glittery. Then again, it wasn't like he'd ever been to the 50s. Mostly because he hadn't been to the mainland since the island moved.

"And why do we avoid touching the rock...?"

Casseroles just seemed weird to serve at a party. Not that Jake cared much.

"Oh!" He got a little eager at the opportunity to answer that question. "Because it turned people into grey monster things."

TRUFAX.

"Right," Peter said. "Right, very good. I'm glad we got that cleared up. By the way, I still have a pair of your gloves. I should come drop those off."

Along with the porn.

"Oh, nah, you can keep 'em," Topher said generously. Then he cocked his head thoughtfully. "Or... they might even be toxic waste, at this point. Are there any biohazard centers nearby?"

Well, there's a thought!

"That's your problem to deal with, though, isn't it?" Peter asked. "What with them being your gloves."
