Arms Hotel, Wednesday, 9/07

Strange things were afoot at the hotel today. For one, the smoking floor had rather suddenly become a no-smoking floor -- which would have been fine, except that guests in the middle of a nic fit kept coming into the lobby to complain it wasn't what they booked.

For another, the maids were getting into slap fights over who stole whose cigarettes.

For a third, there was a strange clumsy bird waddling around squawking at Gunther.

Quinn was going to be the calm center of the chaos as she worked to plan a campaign event.

She's got some new campaign slogans to try out.

Before meeting Kenzi at the shooting range later, Wesley had decided to stop in town. Mainly to hide from those posters, because wow, not okay.

Which brought him to the hotel and over to his co-candidate.

"Hello. Is -- is that a pelican?"

"Possibly?" Quinn said, frowning at the bird. "I don't know. I think it might have escaped from the kitchen."

"That sounds, er, a bit like a health violation," Wesley remarked. And Quinn did not need a health scandal in her campaign! It would be tragic! "Some guests might complain."

Look at all the unhappy smokers, Wes! That ship had sailed!

"Probably they're already throwing a fit," Quinn said wryly. "Either everyone ran out of cigarettes or we have a nicotine klepto, and somehow this is my fault."

Right, that word was starting to hold certain associations for him.

"...It might be Kenzi."

Sorry.

Quinn made a sour face. "Do you even know what I did to her?" she asked. "I mean, I don't mind people thinking I'm a bitch, but she decided she hated me and wanted to ruin my life before I said word one."

Just a tiiiiiiny bit of melodrama, there.

That sort of melodrama wasn't supposed to be cropping up until Soap Opera Weekend! Try to control yourself, Q.

"That sounds... ominous." He frowned. "What, ah, what happened? If you don't mind my asking, of course."

"I was at that random dance a few weeks ago and all of a sudden, wham, she and Topher the moron hit me with jello," Quinn shared indignantly. "Jello. Who throws food at a dance?"

Wesley was totally not amused, thank you. Really. That half-smile on his face was just him thinking of something funny.

"Indeed," he agreed. "That's appalling."

He wasn't going to ask if Quinn had retaliated. Though he assumed that she had.

"It looks as though she's the one who nominated me," he admitted after a moment. Cards on the table and all that.

Quinn rolled her eyes. "Typical. And you could stop smirking."

If Quinn wasn't involved, she might, possibly, have eventually seen the funny side to a food fight at a dance, but she was. There wasn't much of a chance.

But. "So ... it probably kind of gets up her nose that we're running together, right?"

"You might say that," Wesley agreed. You might, because it was true. "It's... possible that she nominated me to, er. Present some competition for you."

Poor Annie, all left out of the drama!

Quinn couldn't help it. She buried her face in her hands and made a series of choking noises.

After a moment, it might be clear she was laughing.

"Wesley, no offense, but that is the dumbest revenge plan. For one thing, if I was serious, I could crush you."

She meant it, too. And she liked Wesley.

Oh. Well, then.

Wesley wasn't offended, per se. But he was a liiiittle bit guarded when he responded, "I suppose it's for the best that we're running together, then."

Okay, weird topic. Time for something else.

"So... do you have any ideas for campaign promotions, that sort of thing?"

Crap, that had sounded worse than she meant it.

"I didn't mean to hurt your feelings." Normally she wouldn't even come that close to an apology,m and it felt awkward. She shook it off and went with the change of topic.

"Maybe. Do you have plans Friday?"

Right, well, that spot of awkwardness was behind them. He appreciated what it must have taken for Quinn to get that close to an apology, yes, but he'd much rather move on than actively address it.

"Class and a library shift, but I should be available in the afternoon, why?"

"We should use the English thing," Quinn said. "Do a tea party. We serve tea and crumpets and let people get to know us. It'd be fun."

Huh. That wasn't a bad idea, actually!

"Interesting," he said thoughtfully, nodding. Little did he know that the island was planning on eating all the tea on Friday, but in theory... "Yes, that sounds like a good idea. I can contact one of the island bakeries to see if they'll cater it?"

"If you do that, I'll set up the space?" Quinn bargained. "Oh. And no Kenzi. I don't want to deal with whatever she does to sabotage me."

"Noted," he replied, grinning. Even though he very much doubted that he could do much to stop Kenzi should she decide to crash it, he wasn't going to mention that to Quinn. Just manners, really.

"So! Friday, then!"

"Friday," Quinn agreed, and might have said more if she hadn't needed to glare at the ringing house phone. "... how much do you want to bet I have to deal with someone else who lost track of her cigarettes?"

That sounded super unsavory, thanks, and that was Wes' cue to go.

"I'll leave you to it," he said, smiling. "Best of luck!"

It is mah birfday. All hail.
