There was no point in trying to hide from his father--Luke would be able to find him anywhere on a planet, let alone an island as small as this one--so Ben decided to go to work for the day instead of heading for the afternoon picnic.

He'd head there later to run interference for Ender when Peter arrived, but right now, the fewer people Vestara had the chance to interact with, the happier Ben would be.

He was currently slightly grease-covered as he poked at a refrigerator for Warren's van, but he'd be happy to be of assistance!

If you weren't Sith, of course.

"Definitely not by yourself," Ben said quickly. "Besides, the squirrels see everything around here."

That didn't sound crazy. Really.

"And I'm supposed to care what rodents see?" she checked.

"You should because they work for the news," Ben said smugly, "so no trying to convert my friends to the Dark Side."

Vestara rolled her eyes. "Believe it or not, I won't be doing that. Sith don't go around converting everyone, Ben. We have standards."

So, really, if anyone wanted to convert Ben, it was like a compliment.

Ben rolled his eyes right back as Luke sighed and wandered over to look at some of the unfamiliar technology. "I've read about some of your Sith. Your standards aren't that high."

Vestara folded her arms. "And what exactly do you think is wrong with those standards?" she asked. She still wouldn't call Jacen Solo a Sith, so she was curious what Ben thought here.

Ben sputtered for a little while before realizing that "one of them looked like a giant talking chicken" wouldn't mean anything to Vestara.

"They're just wrong," he concluded lamely.

"And with that stunning, irrefutable point you win the argument," Vestara said dryly. "It's not wrong."

Maybe they'd been over this before.

Ben blamed Karla's influence for his almost unholy need to reply with "so's your face," but he restrained himself.

"You haven't even met most of my friends," he said. "Maybe they'd make great Sith."

Wait.

"They wouldn't, though."

Dammit. How did he always end up sounding so kriffing stupid around her?

"Are you trying to confuse me out of converting people I never had any intention of converting, or into it?" Vestara asked.

There was another, slightly pained pause. "Yes?" Ben tried.

Vestara smiled slightly. "Then you have nothing to worry about," she said vaguely, just to mess with him.

"I don't like you," Ben decided.
