The Boards, Sunday Evening [Rehearsal]

Jono was... more than a touch subdued this evening as he opened the doors to let the performers in for rehearsal. And could anybody really blame him if he was counting heads as people came in, not because he was worried about attendance, but more because he was concerned about people's ability to attend?

The pitchers of water were set out again, because that was... some sort of thing, he supposed, what with all the singers and such. There was hot water as well today, with a few assorted teabags- green, ginger, peppermint. And honey, should anyone want to sweeten it some.

"Today," he said to the group at large, looking and sounding about as tired as he felt, "we're going to try to finalize what it is you each want to perform for the showcase. It's difficult to rehearse if you don't have material to rehearse. If you're still struggling for something to do, talk to one of us and we'll do what we can to help. We might not understand the finer points of holidays such as Lurlinemas or Winsol, but artistic and technical advice, we can do."

A beat.

"And if there's anything else you need that you'd rather not discuss in front of the group, feel free to take us aside or speak to us after rehearsal. I have a feeling we both understand."

Raven wasn't entirely sure about attending, but after spending the day in the library, she came down to the Boards. She made herself a cup of tea, then slipped off to a corner just to watch as everyone else arrived.

Mercy was very quiet today. In the 'on her absolute best behavior' way. Much like when she was forced to leave Aspen Creek a few months before she'd been sent here, she'd decided that the best way to handle the loss and try to make sure she was not kicked out of another home was to be as ideally behaved and massively inconspicuous as possible.

Billy was probably shocked at how pristine - almost sterile - her part of the room was now.

If she knew enough to realize it, she'd be very sorry for any empathic types who could probably hear her quietness for the gut-wrenching fear of more loss that it was. But for now, she just sat quietly out of the way holding a cup of hot chocolate her stomach wouldn't let her sip, with a small smile that was so well practiced most people wouldn't have known how fake it was.

Miley was looking at her phone in puzzlement as she came in.

No bubbliness today, guys. She was a bit distracted by the fact that Lilly hadn't responded to her texts in over an hour, and that hadn't happened in... well, ever, actually.

Kenzi was wandering around with a bag of donut holes. She might even share one, if someone claimed artistic problems and stage fright. She was also taking measurements of the stage and the flats already there.

Hank hadn't lost anyone -- not that he knew of, anyway -- but he was aware that something screwy was going on. He walked around with what looked like a constipated expression on his face as he tried to make sense of things.

Rinoa wasn't really in any mindset to be here; she had files to work on, people from home were missing, people from other worlds were missing, she hadn't slept in two days, she had no idea what to play, and there might not even be a piano yet.

But she was here. Mostly because she had dragged more files down, and was hoping Jono might be ready to trade her one stack for another.

Elphaba arrived punctually, even though she was still overall vexed by all of the disappearances. It hardly seemed time to be planning and working on festivities.

So she seemed a little irked, though that was often the case with Elphaba, but she wasn't speaking out about this. Not yet, at least.

Seeing Elphaba gave Karla an idea. Picking up her sketchbook, she ambled over. "You have a lovely speaking voice," she said, hellos being for other people. "Can you sing?"

Billy was feeling more guilty than anything else - he could still reach all of his friends and his world seemed to be just fine, and while he was appreciative of those things, he was worried about everyone else.

Karla had pretty much decided which story to tell. Unfortunately, that was the easiest part. Now she had to decide both how to tell it and how to illustrate it. She'd bought a big sketchbook and was sketching out random ideas for illusions.

Tara went to make some tea, but she kept looking at the little bag with the sting attached like she'd never seen it before.

This was possibly not the best time for her to make a stage debut, but the show must go on. She'd sit off to the side, fidget with her tea, and figure things would be all right. Somehow.

Warm-Up

In whatever way suits you. Singers, sing some scales. Those of you with monologues, try some tongue-twisters for diction. Instrumentalists, play something.

Or don't. But your directors might frown at you, if you opt out.

Rinoa hadn't meant to stay. But there was an actual piano here, and reams of sheet music next to it. She was going to look for winter themes and see what she found.

Maybe she was also going to look for anything that seemed interesting to play. It had been too long, and this was a very nice piano, okay?

Rehearsal

"I want your pieces finalized," Jono repeated, crossing his arms over his chest. "If you don't have anything in mind yet, speak up. If you do have something in mind and you need more people for it, speak up. If there's anything else you need, yes, do speak up."

Jono was quite the advocate for talking today, apparently.

When Raven's turn came, she sang the same song as she had at the auditions, but it wasn't nearly as good. She didn't sound terrible and she hit the right notes, but there wasn't any passion behind the words this time.

Hank waved at everyone. "If anyone needs, like, backup singing or music, I can do that, too! Let's make this the best show EVER, and maybe the power of our music will bring back the missing people, okay?!"

And with that, he picked up his guitar and launched into one of the worst renditions of "A Holly Jolly Christmas", ever.

Karla wasn't entirely certain how to rehearse her part yet, though she could tell Jono and Troy that she'd figured out her story and show them some of her sketches, though they were still very rough and subject to change. Fortunately, now that she had Elphaba's agreement to sing some carols, there was a little more to rehearse.

"So, I'd like to add a bit of music to my performance," she said, gesturing to Elphaba. "I know she only auditioned with a spoken piece, but I think that, with a little training and practice, she'll be able to blow people away."

No pressure, Elphie.

"I guess I'll do the Joni Mitchell song," Tara said. If she didn't sound tremendously enthused, that was down to the circumstances alone, and she quirked her head apologetically "Um. Is that all right? I c-could learn something else if you want."

Jono had coffee again today, possibly just out of spite for the universe at large.

He also had a clipboard that was stuffed full of sheet music, in case the musical acts were still struggling. And, not far off, there was a cherry-red Fender Stratocaster. Just in case.

Troy was... a little more subdued today than normal. If it weren't for the fact that missing (or cancelling) rehearsal for any reason other than his own death was, at this point, anathema¹ to him, he might have suggested to Jono that they do just that.

Instead, coffee was had and he was around, and focused, and was there much more you could ask of someone who'd found out twenty-four hours before that his parents were... wherever the vanished people were going that wasn't gone forever?


¹ But not Anathema Device.

If your characters are still struggling with something to do for the showcase, by all means tag one of the directors for advice, and we'll come up with something for you. Likewise, if there was something that you wanted them to do, let us know down here, and we'd be happy to have our boys bring it up.

Also, how do you guys feel about some sort of group number, too? If people don't come up with one today during the rehearsal itself, that's fine- if there's interest, Troy and Jono can pull something else out once the personal acts come together and assign parts for some sort of generic-winter-holiday group number/skit/whatever.

I was actually thinking it might be kind of cool to use the Carol of the Bells at the end of and behind Karla's storytelling with the images she creates.
